In this video essay, we will examine how SLC Punk, starring Matthew Lillard absolutely encapsulates, understands and gives proper representation to punk in a way that NO other movie ever has or probably ever will. It's perfect and does a great job of showcasing anarchy, punk, and the rage of youth. Watch it immediately.

The punk kids at the time were the cast off and disaffected leavings of a hundred different broken systems, collected into a pool of misfits and weirdos that we can look back on now, and define it as punk. Sorry that the modern collection of cast off and disaffected leavings of broken systems collected into a pool of misfits and weirdos didn't seem like punk to you. Maybe the future will feel differently.

A sequel to an underground independent film with a niche following was not a sequel it was a spinoff Not bad but not great it’s in this weird space of mediocre good but worth watching and owning

I just watched the movie recently and I'm so mad at myself for not watching it sooner (I'm 32 at this time for context). While I'm not a punk and never was, I was a teen into alternative aesthetic and alt rock (and later found my love for goth/goth rock) but I always had a casual fascination with the punk scene and I'm sure that teen me would've really enjoyed the movie. I will admit that the message was a tough pill because I do think one can still enjoy punk and dress in it in older age but I do agree and like the sentiment of the movie which is be true to yourself as well as knowing that living with a huge nihilistic view on life does have it's pitfalls. The only thing that would've made the movie solid would've been if we saw Steve-O listening to some Punk music on a CD-Player while he was sitting on a bench to show that you don't have to give up a music style you like as well as to commemorate his friendship with Bob and how he got him into punk) but that's just me lol Overall I enjoyed the movie and can't wait to watch it again in the future haha.

The funny thing is I remember when this film came out it was considered poser trash by a lot of people I knew in the punk scene at the time. The first time I watched it I admittedly thought it was a little corny myself. I rewatched it a few years back and came to realize its merits especially as a former member of the LDS church. Great review and video!

I first was a little pissed at this movie for always mixing up anarchism and chaos. But i think this is kind of the point. Part of the fun is the main characters dont really knowing everything about what they talk about, what they do or what they want most of the time. They are in a process of finding themselves and wildly theorize all over the place. I like to be with with anarchists and left activists in general, but i also find comfort in the nihilism and nonsense of punk and in chaos. It's inside me all the time and when it's around me, i am at peace.

The irony that this movie is a punk right of passage… when the message is essentially calling the fan base posers.

@ColeLikesMovies aww thanks, I stole the v.h.s. from Video Time and kept it in the anti-theft plastic case. I feel like that's key to the story somehow. Check out that 'King Dork' book I suggested in the other comment, the author is the singer of 'Mr. T EXPERIENCE' I think you'll dig it.

@@ColeLikesMovies same premise :) although it could be because I relate more to punk than the 1950s 😜 SLC punk is has the same moral. That ol' chestnut that goes like: Part of growing up, is coming to terms our ideals are also just ideas 😜 (at least that's how I see the lesson in both stories). Hey! Have you ever watched "Thrashin"? It's a 80s skateboard flick that does "west side story with skateboards" (which is just a newer version of Romeo and Juliet)🤣

@@ColeLikesMovies it was definitely a happy accident but it really does line up perfectly. If they told me it wasn’t an accident I wouldn’t be shocked though. It’s very possible Jason or the writers had a soft spot for this character and leaned into it.
