Sleep and breathing are essential to human development, health and daily life. The typical human breathes more than 25,000 breaths each day and swallows up to 1000 times per day.
Recent research has shown a significant increase in the incidence of sleep-disordered breathing. A growing body of research has also shown that orofacial myofunctional disorder (OMD) and sleep-disordered breathing are often comorbid, or exist together. Research has also shown strong correlations between Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) intervention and better outcomes for patients with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) including diagnoses of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (POSA).

Cousin has sleep apnea disorder. He is in his 50s. Isn't sleep apnea a contributing factor in people who are overweight?

Yes, obesity/significant weight gain are definitely contributing factors to OSA. Functional breathing patterns, tongue posture and orofacial function are also contributing factors. OMT targets the latter. I have links to research that discusses how OMT can support patients with OSA here: daniellekleeslp.com/sleep-disordered-breathing-osa-myofunctional-therapy/

When I was suffering from my most acute TMJ symptoms, I went to many doctors who recommended medication, mouth guards and even surgery. After years of no answers and no relief from my symptoms, I saw a dentist who diagnosed me with Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder (e.g. tongue thrust and mouth breathing) and said it was significantly contributing to all of my TMJ symptoms. That dentist then referred me to see a Myofunctional Therapist. Myofunctional Therapy profoundly reduced my TMJ symptoms, improved my quality of sleep and overall quality of life. I completely changed career paths and went back to school to become a speech pathologist who specializes in Myofunctional Therapy because therapy had such a profound impact on health.
