This video is for my NHS patients as I do not have access to myofunctional therapy yet in my Snoring and Sleep Apnoea clinic. I cannot provide myofunctional therapy for my patients, so I have just provided the throat (oropharyngeal) exercises here which is better than nothing. Myofunctional therapy includes oropharyngeal exercises, as well as an emphasis on posture, breathing, retraining programmes and other therapeutic modalities. This is therefore not a replacement of myofunctional therapy. These exercises are meant to complement the therapeutic options available in my snoring and sleep apnoea clinic on the NHS.
Mr Vik Veer - ENT Consultant and lead for the Sleep Surgery department at the Royal National ENT Hospital, London.

Thanks from the USA. It’s getting harder everyday to get the doctor who will spend few more minutes to listen to patients and teach them or make them to understand the causes and symptoms. They rush to fulfill the pharmaceutical demand which is some kind of pills ( sleeping, pain killer, anti depression, muscle relaxer or so on and on ...). That’s why I am very grateful to you for taking extra time to explain. Rest will depend on the patients how seriously they take it. Your cost free services are global due to technology and blessings are pouring upon you universally. Thanks from the deepest part of my heart.

Yeah, me too. I finally went to a doctor regarding chronic nasal congestion, etc.. Actual visit was only about 5 minutes. Never even mentioned a nasal rinse. Now I use one and it makes a huge difference. I think there needs to be a new - intermediate profession. One in which a skilled professional does a personal evaluation and best options of all challenges a patient faces. (Nutrition, simple exercises, etc..)

MDs here in the US spend as little time as possible with patients providing the very bare minimum of information on the symptoms. It's very rushed and they provide no additional information unless you specifically ask a pointed question. There is often no diagnosis given. No extra time to explain anything. Often you are asking follow up questions as they are backing their way out of the exam room.

@@healthfitnessbysuman6602 I had throat collapse/airway problems under local while having work done on a tooth filling. It was very interesting to observe my apnea while fully conscious. The dentist pretty much told me to, "Suck it up, buttercup," when I made him aware of my difficulties, LOL. Prior to that, I went under general for wisdom tooth extraction, all 4 at once. I suspected I was intubated (later confirmed) because I had a sore throat after waking. I now make it a point to let medical staff know of my apnea and past experiences every time there is a possibility of anesthesia.

I think you are an intelligent, compassionate, amazing Dr. who actually has common sense and brains. This is what has happened to me for years. They sent me to a dentist, an ENT, and not for nothing they told me they had no idea why I had sleep apnea. I thought it was a worthless sleep study she woke me 5 times during the night and sent me home in the middle of the night while it was snowing and sleeting and I was exhausted sort of a comma state and I had a 30-minute drive home. This is for real, no exaggeration. I tried 5 different masks and all they said was just stick to it.. I do not use the cpap anymore. Won't stay on my face I must take off in the middle of the night and my eyes dry out. I just asked my Dr. about the Inspire and I am so glad to find your videos. Thank You, Thank you!

@@zvonazvon that happens to me for the las 3 months, my primary care doctor suspected I might have sleep apnea so she referred me to a pulmonologist dr to get a sleep study. I used the study machine for 2 nights at home, they monitored me and the results came up positive. Also, CPAP (and mandibular advancement devices) push the maxilla backwards into the airway. Long term, they make the problem worse and do nothing to address the cause.

Thank you for teaching these amazing exercises. I have been doing it for a week and feel better already. I don't know if I have sleep apnea but was having similar symptoms and really needed help. I am able to breath so much better. It feels like some congesting has cleared up. For last few years, I have gone from nose endoscopy to esophagography to taking the sleep apnea home test. The sleep apnea home test using a small kit (given to me) turned out to be a ridiculous thing. It didn't work due to the finger piece being loose and still the insurance was charged for almost $1000. They suggested me to retake the test and I learnt that there is going to be another charge. I have high deductible insurance and was coming to know what is being sent to them. I lost my trust in this testing and thought It's just a gimmick. My sincere appreciation for Dr Veer for this selfless act and helping heal others. God bless

Thanks so much for making this video! I've been to a doctor, done a sleep study, but can't afford a CPAP and it didn't seem to work for me anyone. Why none of the doctor's I met shared these exercises when they seem so simple and helpful is a mystery. Thanks!

I am so fortunate to be able to see this amazing video to help with my chronic sleep apnea. I tried CPAP and I hate it. I tried mouth guard and it hurts my teeth, both were disrupting my sleep, and I have been struggling with my insomnia that leads to my life living like a half dead person, no energy and feeling tired and dizzy all day long that I could hardly to do things that I wanted. I was just searching for CPAP on KZfaq and this video popped up just like a heavenly sent . I will for sure practice these 5 useful techniques to improve my sleep apnea as well as my insomnia even just 50% better that is much better than wearing mask on face and struggling with tube with all kinds of side effects. These 5 practices definitely are more natural than machine!

It has been just over a week now since i was fortunate enough to discover your content and the impact has bee immediate and far reaching. I still don't have sleep cycle under control yet but when I do sleep the quality is massively improved and I have unbroken, dream filled sleep that allows me to wake up more refreshed than i have ever felt. I have also found my breathing in general has improved. It is still very early days but already I have no doubt this is a massive change. Being a poor sleeper has ruined my life since childhood and if anyone struggles with snoring i can't emphasise enough how powerful these techniques could prove to be. Thank you so much and will update further at a later date.

I am glad that I found this. This is good! Sleep Apnoea / snoring are so damaging for sleep - and we can't help, although we can often do a brilliant job of helping apnoea sufferers who are treating the apnoea (i.e. where just dealing with apnoea isn't enough for good sleep because we also have a pattern of poor sleep that has become entrenched.)

Have you also tried taping your mouth to prevent mouth breathing? Just a strip of sellotape 2 to 3 cm long applied diagonally across your lips or vertically (as you would hold a finger up to your lips to shush someone). Surgical tape is more expensive but has less of a grip. Any tape will do, such as masking tape, etc.

I'm so glad I stumbled upon your video. I've gone from 240 pounds to 175 pounds in about 8 months and I joined a gym 3 months ago. Changes my lifestyle to a more active one and started eating clean.. however I'm still exhausted all the time and I wake up numerous times throughout the night, sometimes even gasping for air and my heart feels like it's going a 1000 miles a minute and hurts (rarely). I also seem to have very vivid dreams and the occasional sleep paralysis episode (which I actually find to be entertaining because I've learned how to force them into lucid dreams, very cool lol). I'm going to try these exercises and see if it helps because waking up everyday exhausted is no Bueno and I feel like it has a detrimental effect on my everyday life and motivation. Cheers from Canada!

So pleased to see these exercises presented by a western doctor. I have had sleep apnea for 20 years, but intolerant to c-pap (sinus infections) and mandibular advancement didn't work either. Many years ago I learned about these exercises through an Ayurvedic website, which also tied the exercises to strengthening/balancing the parasympathetic nervous system. This is the root of the associated problems of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke that you mentioned, which are characterized by sympathetic dominance and inflammation. Hope I live long enough to see western "medicine" move more fully to embrace the tremendous knowledge embodied in Ayurveda, TCM, etc., where it is recognized that our health is the fully functional and integrated expression of our inherited genes and the regulation of their expression through our mind (thoughts and emotions), and actions - this latter includes all the choices and activities from how we breathe, to what we eat and drink, how we move, and how we sleep. Much of the costly (both financially and physically) pill-popping and surgeries would become avoidable. The power of correct breathing and its regulation is foundational to all aspects of health.
