Sleeping Bag Foot Section Condensation. My Genius DIY Fix
As a tall person I often struggle with keeping the foot section of my sleeping bag dry when sleeping in a tent as my height often leads to the bottom of my sleeping bag pushing up against the inner and then outer walls resulting in it becoming damp.
In this video I share how I've come up with a novel solution with the help of Alpkit....

I use the Exped inflation sack for this purpose, works a treat, then use it for any dirty clothes storage the next day - 3 uses from one item!

I just put my waterproof jacket zipped up over the foot box, I just make use of the kit that I have with me.

I tried that approach for much of last year but always found that my jacket ended up sliding off during the course of the night. I agree with you though. If you can make it work for you then it makes sense to use what you already have.

Neat solution - looks very satisfying! This seems to be a common issue, not just for tall peeps, as most tents seem to be designed for hobbits. The designers appear to forget about the extra inches eaten up by sleeping bag material at each end, plus don't allow adequately for the slope of the tent inner when the bag is lifted several inches off the ground by inflatable pad + foam under-mat. If you're accustomed to using a LightAF mat under your sleeping pad to stop it sliding, there's a quick and dirty alternative I've come up with. The LightAF mat is so grippy, you don't need the full length under the pad to keep it in place, so you can pull a few feet out of the bottom end and drape it up and over the top of your sleeping bag toebox. This is enough to stop moisture transferring from the inner to the sleeping bag, plus it allows air to circulate around the toebox to prevent sogginess from trapped condensation.

Brilliant Craig! Love the 'Foot bucket'. Maybe if it had a rim like a roll top dry bag with the two little plastic side release buckles it could be duel purpose. Dry bag/pack liner and foot box protector. 👍👍👍

Craig, Maybe connect the 'foot bucket' to an elasticated strap that goes around the sleeping pad, like the straps used to fix quilts to a sleeping pad. Therefore you would not have to do any modifications to the sleeping bag. This would enable the 'foot bucket' to work with any sleeping bag or mat. Just a brain fart.... All the best 👍

Sounds like great service from Alpkit, its those experiences which wil see people returning as customers and we need to support those businesses 👍 Your solution is a simple and very clever fix, more reliable than sticking your waterproofs over the end of the bag like the rest of us have to 😅 great video, thanks.

Nice elegant solution, Craig! I've had the same problem. I lay the bottom half of my bag on top of my poncho and wrap it up for the same effect and works great. My poncho is by _2GoSystems_ so it already has snaps since it can be used as a bivy or em. tarp as well, and my bag is from the same company and already has loops and snaps as well. Use shock cord to secure though, Craig, so you don't pull out your stiching from your bag! Thanks for another great vid!

+David Vaughn Hi David, I did consider using a drawcord to secure it but after a little testing we realised that in order to have it secure enough so that it didn't slide off or move around as I turned in my sleep, it needed to be so tight that it constricted the baffles in the sleeping bag.

I actually put a water-resistant sweater over my summer sleeping bag. But i like this better as it will stay put. My winter bag doesn't have this problem as it is a special military bag with waterproofing.

You know, I was talking about this exact thing just recently. I like the addition of the clips to keep it in place, good idea. Would be great if a company made these instead of having to cut up a decent bivvi bag.

That’s what you get for being tall 😂 I use my pack liner. I don’t be see me sewing tabs into all my winter bags. Just a thought but what about making the same footbox liner with a sewn on grip as the hem. It would gather enough traction to not slip down I think without damaging all your expensive bags

Surely you'd just get condensation inside the footbag material? Or is it highly breathable or unlikely to get to dew point???
@TheBushcraftPadawan

@@TheBushcraftPadawan thanks. I've never used a bivvy bag. Am I to understand that they don't get condensation in them? I have a Lanshan 1 pro and get condensation a lot. I (stupidly) tried a plastic bin liner over my footbox, it was warm but got extra soaked.

Not breathable = still end up with a soggy foot box. Not able to attach it to a sleeping bag, so it will slip off = still end up with a soggy foot box.

Your title says genius diy fix for foot condensation…your pushing against the bottom of the tent will cause the water to permeate from outside(rain) through to your sleep bag ..and get wet….thats not really condensation.! But I get your idea!…it will protect your bag from the permeating water from outside !
