Sleep Ranch

Sleep Ranch

2 жыл бұрын

My name is Carson Sleep, I’m 23 years old and am a 6th generation rancher on the Sleep Ranch.
Our ranch is located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where my family settled and started ranching in 1883.
I work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jacques, and my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town. We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.
To God be the Glory

Hello Carson, I was led to your channel through Adler Farms channel where Chad was interviewing you. I went to your site and was immediately hooked for many reasons. 1. You're a Christian and NOT afraid to say so. 2. You and your adorable wife have a real mission with this channel! With all the real junk on social media, you are bringing "fresh air" to those of us who believe in faith, family, and freedom. 3. You don't talk your viewers to death. Thank you!! You explain and show your viewers WHY your life works the way it does. It is so interesting!! I grew up on a farm where my dad fed out black Angus steers. I'm more like your mom and dad's age, but I'm very impressed with your relationship with them. Hope wonderful for your kids to grow up on your ranch!! God bless you all!!

My sister and her hubby raise Gelbvieh cows. They say the colostrum (mother's 1st milk), is very important for the baby to start nursing, within the first hours of being born. The colostrum is loaded with tons of antibioties, vitamins, minerals and all the good things that the baby needs for getting a good start on life. I was hoping the baby would take to mom quickly, y'all did the right thing in forcing the baby to nurse, thank you!

Hey Carson, For big country cattle you really have excellent disposition on them which is so awesome, like I said before there's always a nut in the bunch. I thought I was the only beef rancher who cleans daily, the yard is scraped daily and calving pens cleaned also, I truly appreciate it. that.

Can’t tell you how many times I had cows in my shorts while tagging them. We use to tag, put dehorning paste because they were Herefords, and put a Cherrio on their nuts.

Hey Carson, thanks for another great video. Working with the calves is hard work but I'm sure very rewarding in the end. They are very cute and it is nice to see new life starting out. Enjoyed seeing No. 65, Penelope at the end, she sure enjoyed her massage. After that crazy cow jumping the fence it was nice to see calm Penelope.

Having worked on a dairy farm when I was in high school, I've had to do exactly what you boys did this morning. On occasion, the cow would never accept the calf, so we had to feed the calf milk we a gotten from the daily milking. We'd also add calf manna to the milk for nutrients.

@ Dave Brooks is there a reason why they are dropping,is it because spring is in the air and soon approaching or is it cause of alot of cows are getting sold because of the farmers and ranchers don't have any grass to feed them cause of the drought the last 2 years in Wyoming and South Dakota for sure those 2 states that I know of.

Really enjoy your videos. I grew up on a small beef farm in Upstate NY. Sadly all those small farms are gone now. Big dairy is all thats here now. I just retired and soon gonna be making my way out west. Would love to come and volunteer my time on ranches out in wyoming. I live in the ADK mountains and enjoy watching all the ranch way of life. Big whitetail hunter and looking to buy my first horse to hunt from. When you think NY, the northern part of the state is all country and mountains. I dont relate with the trash from the cities. We are totally different people. Jeep the content coming and Godbless

Hey friend! Looks like calving is going super well for you all. Hope that all continues and decent weather too. That one cow having such a fit about you moving her and the calf brings the point home that this is NOT a "safe" occupation we are in! LOL! Yesterday, our biggest angus cow calved a nice bull calf and it was really cold and heading to WAY below zero over night. I dreaded having to deal with her because when we first bought her two years ago, she tried to kill my hubby and I when simply ear tagging her calf. She tamed down a LOT and now knows we arent going to hurt her or the calf but I am always on guard around her. Yesterday she was a dream to deal with. Thank God for that! Hope our 30 below zero windchill temps we have here this morning dont head your way. Blessings to you all!

Hi Carson, As a kid, I worked for a vet summers on farm calls and every Tuesday after school at the sales barn, mostly blood testing cattle for interstate shipment. For as many times as I/we got clobbered by Angus cattle-even small calves plus nearly crushed by a ton of Angus bull that repatedly cracked 2X12 fence boards in an earnest attempt to get me (bless the builder who used railroad tie posts), I can't believe how close you get to your cattle, especially helping distressed calves to nurse. I see you try to be cautious moving the cows and heifers, but having had Angus hooves knock hats off my head with both feet, I think you guys much rank up there with 'Extreme Athletes' who get credit for doing poorly thought-out tricks when you guys do your thing on a daily basis and make it seem as low-key as training bonsai trees or raising guppies. My respect knows no bounds. I have wondered, though, if you ever thought about switching over to Jerseys instead.
@sleepranch
@sleepranch 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Petty! Those sound like awesome memories working with cattle and very exciting as well! We haven’t really given jerseys much thought though!

Hello Carson love watching your calving seasons videos and I like your hiredman Jacques he is a big asset to your family operation. Could you tell me how much cow and calf pairs are as I have been thinking about getting a couple as I have a place to feed them in the summer. And my son is a accountant and owns his own business in Sioux Falls SD and he bought a hog confinement last November and there could be some grass by it to put some calves. Do you and your wife ever make it to Sioux Falls. There are some ranches that I follow on You Tube they live between Sioux Falls and Rapid City and they bought into like a co-op called Starla station and the ranchers name is Sonne farms Brian is the father and Cole is the son and has the You Tube account and they raise Black Angus beef stock you might know of them cause they sell breeding bulls and they have done it for many years. Do you know of them and what are pairs are bringing ?
@sleepranch
@sleepranch 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Robert, that’s sounds like a really cold idea! I think you should do it, I’m not sure what a pair costs right now but usually it’s around $2000 or so! My wife’s parents live right outside of Sioux Falls so we do go that way pretty often! I also don’t know the Sonnes personally but I have heard of them, I think Cole is only a year or two older than me and he seems like a cool guy!

Are you all having a normal calf-loss rate this year? A ranch south of you is having a terrible loss/aborting rate and they are wondering if it’s the poor hay quality this year or...? Also your ranch hand Jacque seems like an amazing asset, keep him safe. :)
@sleepranch
@sleepranch 2 жыл бұрын
He is a great asset! Our calving loss/abortion rate has been pretty normal so far this year. It’s hard to say what could be the cause, disease, feed management, genetics…there are a lot of things that could cause more abortions or stillborn calves. We do feel for them as that can be very discouraging and disappointing. Hopefully things get better and they can find a cause!
