They probably should have made it a found footage movie similar to the game. It would have been more engaging, cheaper, and closer to what people actually would have wanted in a Slender Man movie.

On top of that EVERYONE has done their own rip-offs of Slender: "Bye Bye Man", and episode of 'Supernatural', even an episode of one of the CSI shows (of course, both of these used the concept of an 'internet meme monster' while still trying to be 'original'..... and failing ^_^)

Unsaidrumble The man of 1000 worlds even then it wouldn't be good, look at the Jeff the killer movie, that was in production and was announced around the prime of creepypasta, everyone hated it. Why do people think if a movie was released at a certain time it would have been good? It would have been shit even if it was released in 2010 or 2009.

@servomoore
@servomoore 6 жыл бұрын
Because they didn't create it. The Marble Hornets guys were ripping off Victor Surge, and Sony did credit him.
@theanafront3746
@theanafront3746 6 жыл бұрын
servomoore I'm not talking about the *source* . I'm talking about the series and the specific tropes it used to flesh out the slenderman mythos that don't really make much sense outside of the medium. For example, the slender 'sickness' symptoms of sudden headaches, fatigue, mild hallucinations - all associated with staring at a *computer screen* for too long, i.e, watching online and intentionally implemented to make it feel more submersive and interactive. The flashing, cryptic, hallucinogenic imagery: totheark's clues and messages to the main character in *video form* . Finding pages - initially a means to remember what you're running from, because the slenderman made you *forget* entire pieces of your life upon encountering him. The whole thing is reliant on the video-journal (or videogame) format and doesn't really translate well to a 2hour movie. It could work, but it would require actual EFFORT. Tl;dr, there are more things blatantly ripped from MH and other more creative works (with the budget of a ham sandwich and a pack of gummybears, no less) without understanding what made those things WORK, than there is of someone taking the source material and making it their own. As a side note, MH were writers on "The 8 Pages", but got screwed over on the rights and the story; the same thing happened when they were approached for a movie by actual Hollywood professionals. They ended up losing everything that they worked to build. This movie openly shits on ALL of those smaller creators out there just by not trying anything new or different, and somehow looking worse despite actually having a budget and professionals to make it. It turned something artful and with a lot of potential into just a cheap, past-the-fad cash-grab. And that's...genuinely frustrating.

I never got the appeal of Slenderman, as a creature I found his design bland and uncreative. Granted it was spooky as that first game with the jumpscare schtick but the whole fan worship of him and overhype kill it for me. The creepy pasta community and the creation of Jeff the killer (a Joker ripoff excuse for naive fangirls to romanticize a serial killer) sum up how the internet isn't really good at creating actual long lasting folklore. They should stick to memes.

At no point was this movie scary. Not even the slightest. I really enjoyed the look and style of the movie, but beyond that, it lacked any depth and I felt absolutely nothing for these characters, nor did I care about anything that was happening to them. It was like watching a corny imitation of every cheesy scary movie from like the early 2000's thrown together like a collage. By the end, everyone in my theater literally burst into laughter when the credits began to roll. It was as if we all had a collective "wtf was that?" moment. I've never had such a emotionless feeling while watching a scary movie.

Not only do I wish it could have been made in a found footage kind of way, but I wish they found a different median for him to appear aside from an online website that literally tells you how to summon him. Maybe some punks could find a tree with the symbol on it and they deface it somehow, resulting in him appearing from the symbol itself.

I don't understand how this is a missed opportunity. Let's say if this movie wasn't 8-9 years late and was released in 2009 or 2010. I feel this movie would be just as bad either way, One of the main reasons why I think is because the creepy pasta wasn't that good to begin with, let's be honest here, slendermans really cliche and kinda bland. The main source material is already not that good.

Reptilian Lizard im going to try an answer. What i feel makes Slender man works is the subtle horror in stuff like marble hornets that leads to the "Oh Shit" moment when he finally gets his target. Its the subtle fear of realizing that this creature has been following you, in plain daylight and no one cares. Its the slow mental deterioration of victim that slowly drives them mad, which leads others to follow down this sick rabbit hole. Its all in the psyochological cold dread of this abomination that, outwardly, shows no emotion, doesn't speak and has taken the form of a humanaid creature, but is so fundamentally wrong that its hard to understand how he exists. A creature that drives you into madness and claims you with no emotion or soul, by slowly letting you wittle yourself down, for days, to weeks, to months, and even years until you finally break.
@bozotheclown666
@bozotheclown666 6 жыл бұрын
Su3Legacy the problem is that that's not that original, that's been done better by so many other authors, not only that there are so many other creepy pasta monsters that are more original and well written ex: mr.wide mouth, I don't think he's this well written monster or anything and I don't think the concept of making people kill them selves is original, but how he does it and his character is a lot more well written, interesting, and more original than slender man.
@Su3Legacy
@Su3Legacy 6 жыл бұрын
Reptilian Lizard its not the most original, I will gladly agree. No idea really is, but its what gained the most popularity by virtue of being created at the right time and location. Even with better creepy pastas out there, the more popular ones will always have the better appeal than really well written obscure ones. Sadly, that's just how it is.

This movie should have come out like 5 years ago. No one gives a fuck about Slenderman now. Also, why do they keep putting this Joey King chick in all these terrible horror films?

So I guess I've got the Slender Man Halloween suit costume minus the tentacles. Suit and tie on point though. Must represent all that toasty goodness over his body, just needs that Double Toasted logo on it.

This movie is already rendered completely redundant considering people with virtually zero budget have made awesomely effective and terrifying Slenderman films and miniseries right here on KZfaq. Seriously.

blumhouse should have made this film and people keep saying on it was too late anyway it does not matter how old the it is why does.that matter unless it was a good .live which it was not it was a 1/10 if clubhouse made it and actually a good director and good actors and writers it might have been good and who mange blumhouse might buy the rights someday and make it a mystery of is slender man evil or not what is he where did he come and stuff like that.

jude herborn Exactly. This movie's budget was 20 million something. Blumhouse could have made this film for 3m and they could have made it good.

Marble Hornets was the best thing to come out for the Slenderman. I love the Creepypasta of him, but not everyone can make a movie or short videos out of it. Those guys made some really eerie shit, and it was awesome. Marble Hornets is highly recommended.

The cinematographer (Luca del Puppo) was too good for that director. You can tell when the director told him “I want this shot” and it looks really laughable. When he was free to do what he wants he did really well. Good amount of J-cuts, some really well placed L-cuts, a nice dolly zoom, good panning shots, etc.

Sounds like this director should've gone the route the 3rd act of Hereditary did with certain people in the background. That effed us up in the theatre. It was so effective because they weren't jump scares. The director let those creepy scenes play out and mess with your head and linger. My group was smart to follow up that movie with Incredibles 2.

Got to disagree with Korey, I don't think this movie manages to succeed at any time. There was no mood, it was a hacked up film full of tedium and Diet Horror. He mentions it's creepy early on, and I just don't see it. Slender Man isn't creepy, he's kind of lame, he's kiddie horror, at best. His being badly shopped into the background of a picture isn't creepy in itself. His lack of features isn't creepy in itself. He never really comes together as a creepy, compelling monster. A bunch of twigs breaking in a forest and cicadas going quiet isn't scary, like I said, that's Diet Horror. Characters saying "He drives you insane" isn't scary...what is it about him that drives you insane? A few tentacles on his back? That's it? That dumb internet video that "downloads" him like a "computer virus" into your brain? That's a cop out thing that pre-teens say in attempts to be spooky. It doesn't work in itself with no context. Let's look at two Slender Man-type creatures from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer show - The Gentlemen, and Der Kindestod. You see the context for why you should be afraid of these things in the show, they build that shit properly, and you see it in their visual design and the effect they have on their victims. The Gentlemen, in particular, are Slender Man done properly. Similar look, except they have creepy looking grins and metallic teeth, and look old and haggard. The glide along silently, their movements are eerie, they steal your voice so you're not able to scream when their creepy minions hold you down and they cut your heart out. There's meat on the bones of the concept, you see what they can do and can thus imagine how terrifying it'd be to have that happen, and what a horrible way to die it is. Der Kindestod stalks sick children in hospital and sucks the remaining life out of them. It's invisible to adults, it scares kids and holds them down while they scream, it's eyes coming out of it's head and splitting open to look like mouths before draining the child as they scream. That shit is fucked up, the context and actions of it make it a fucked up creature and a horrible way to die, creating fear. Slender Man by comparison is this boring, featureless nothing with skinny arms and legs who takes kids away (according to rumours). His depiction in the movie is laughable. Playing a loud noise over a close-up of his blank head isn't scary. The hauntings and visions aren't scary, they're shit obviously directly lifted from other movies - the surreal imagery of The Ring, the shaking/spasming head from Jacob's Ladder and about a million other movies, the woods imagery from Evil Dead and Blair Witch...except all done a LOT worse and less effectively. One victim disappears silently and there's no follow up, another "loses her mind" a day or so after she sees his face, one is jump-scared a bit in a library and then grabbed out of a window by tree branches, the other is stalked by a big spider-monster version of Slender Man before being absorbed into a tree. It's so bafflingly non-scary, I don't get how anyone but the very young can get anything out of it in terms of horror. Fuck Slender Man, both the movie and the lame internet phenomenon it's based on. It's horror for people who don't actually like horror.

It seems like the makers of this movie are more inspired by the crime of the girls who tried to kill their friend than the lore and the origin of Slenderman.
