This is a test of the 125 gr Slick Trick Standard.
Here is summary of my 2024 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 21 pts)
I'm using a Killer Instinct SWAT X1 crossbow, mounted to a BOG tripod, shooting a 670 gr Bishop Archery GOAT bolt (300 fps) at 30 yds. Field points consistently hit in the 10 ring & bullseye. I use the exact same bolt to shoot the broadhead. The only difference in the two shots is the broadhead's flight forgiveness vs that of the field point. A bullseye gets a score of 11/10, or a perfect score of 20 + 1 Bonus Point. The 10 ring gets a 10/10, or 20 points; a 9 ring gets a 9/10 or 18 points...& so forth, with each wider ring being 1/2" farther from the bullseye. Mechs are also given 1 Bonus Point for extra forgiveness.
2. Cut Size (20%, 14.2 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (2" = 5.6 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2” = 5.6 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1" = 3 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 17.92 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 166 grams = 10/10 = 9 pts) & Edge Retention (9%, +82 grams = 8.36/10 = 7.52 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF & 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (7/10=1.4 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 18.71 pts)
There are 2 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 10% of the score. (9.25" = 10 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 10% of the score.
( 61 layers= 8.71 pts)
5. Durability (20%, 19.88 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (9.75/10 = 4.88 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (10/10 = 3 pts).
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS:
+..34 pts sharpness greater than baseline
+.28 pts Pen 1 better than baseline
TOTAL SCORE: 92.33 pts = 10 Golden Arrows
Price: $12.50/head

Great old classic heavy duty, accurate broadhead that leaves a big hole. It's as good today as when it was introduced. The Slick Trick Standard and the QAD Exodus are 2 of my favorite double bevel blade broadheads.

I would be very interested to see the SIK F3 broadheads again in your 2024 testing and scoring. I bet the accuracy with the crossbow would be just incredible just like these were. I use SIK F3 broadheads and I trust this broadhead brand. Like you said in the F3 video sometimes innovation works where others fall short! I see you’re bringing back a lot of classics and retesting so I hope these are on your list. Love the channel and the content so thank you!

Shot these for a few years. Very solid head construction wise. My problem with them was the complete lack of blood trails for some reason even with excellent shot placement. Really made no sense to me but it happened enough times that I changed and never looked back. Recovered all deer shot with them but some difficult trails to follow.

Bloodletting is all about what vessels or arteries you cut. A wider cut has a better chance of slicing through an artery. But these do cut a lot of tissue, just with a smaller diameter.

Slick Trick, QAD exodus, Magnus stinger, Tooth of the Arrow and Rocky mountain Cuththroat are my go tos.. my priorities are Accuracy, Penetration, and toughness (is it gonna explode/deflect if it hits bone?)... i dont care about blade retention, i sharpen or replace blades after every use (except target practice)
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 ай бұрын
And retention is even more important than initial sharpness. Many broadheads are super sharp out of the package, but our Dell by the time they impact the Hyde. But Ed retention affects the cutting throughout the entire animal. An edge integrity plays a huge role in penetration. Edge chatter hinders penetration

No experience with this vintage broadhead. Did amazing on the test. I just don't pay that much for a replaceable broadhead and usually shoot at least 150 grain or heavier. 4 edge tip splits the bone in two directions which is better than a 3 blade that tries to split a bone in three directions.

Any reason you aren't shooting a more typical crossbow arrow in the 400-450 gr total weigh range? That would have your speed up to where the flight characteristics are going to be a lot more sensitive.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 4 ай бұрын
Good question. I experimented with a lot of different weights and distances. I wanted to find one that would most accurately Minnick the speed at which a compound bow is shot. But with a crossbow, I have the advantage of it being on a mounted rest with a scope, to eliminate much more human error.so the weight I use generates the speed of about 300 ft./s. And the results are actually very similar to the results. I’ve gotten in all my other flight testing over the years, but are much more consistent with the crossbow.
@gregk7012

John why is it that when you shoot a fixed head into the layered cardboard we don’t see cutting from the blades on impact? Just a punch hole basically. I get that with the mechanicals but I’ve often wondered why the fixed don’t show the slicing immediately. Kudos on another great test, and apparently a great head. I have never played with Slick Trick, even though they’ve been around for a long time. it would be nice to see them make an inch and a quarter to an inch and a half diameter head. Also, how are you liking that X1 Crossbow? It’s on my list.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 4 ай бұрын
Well, with a fix blade head, it’s a given that the Cut in the cardboard is going to be the same size as the blade themselves. I just showed the final layer that the broadhead penetrated up until or through. It’s just because that’s what the test is for, to show the depth of penetration via the number of layers. And I am really loving the SWAT X1! It’s so fun to shoot.

@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 4 ай бұрын
Yes, I understand that. The the reason I am using a crossbow is to have a more controlled, accurate, consistent platform to test the flight of the Broadheads. I am purposely using a heavy bolt to reduce the weight to compound bow speeds. That way it is a more relevant test for vertical bow shooters. and that is my target audience. In the past, I just shot them through my vertical bow, but that is nowhere near as consistent as using a mounted crossbow with a scope.

“Accuracy test” at that range using a heavy crossbow bolt? Not a very great test of accuracy.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 ай бұрын
I think it is. I was using my compound bow at 30 yards for accuracy testing. But I could not rule out human error as much as I can with a crossbow. So I shoot it at compound bow speeds, yet can benefit with the scope, and tripod, and accuracy of the crossbow itself. So it is a much more consistent way to compare the flights of the Broadheads with the field point. The only variable that changes the flight is the Broadhead and not any human error.
