This is a test of the 125 gr Slick Trick ViperTrick.
Here is summary of my 2024 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 16 pts)
I'm using a Killer Instinct SWAT X1 crossbow, mounted to a BOG tripod, shooting a 670 gr Bishop Archery GOAT bolt (300 fps) at 30 yds. Field points consistently hit in the 10 ring & bullseye. I use the exact same bolt to shoot the broadhead. The only difference in the two shots is the broadhead's flight forgiveness vs that of the field point. A bullseye gets a score of 11/10, or a perfect score of 20 + 1 Bonus Point. The 10 ring gets a 10/10, or 20 points; a 9 ring gets a 9/10 or 18 points...& so forth, with each wider ring being 1/2" farther from the bullseye. Mechs are also given 1 Bonus Point for extra forgiveness.
2. Cut Size (20%, 14.05 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.94" = 5.43 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.94” = 5.43 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.063" = 3.19 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 18.91 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 167 grams = 10/10 = 9 pts + Bonus) & Edge Retention (9%, +27 grams = 9.6/10 = 8.51 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF & 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (7/10=1.4 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 18.71 pts)
There are 2 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 10% of the score. (9.25" = 10 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 10% of the score.
( 61 layers= 8.71 pts)
5. Durability (20%, 19.45 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (9.5/10 = 4.75 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (10/10 = 3 pts).
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS:
+.33 pts sharpness greater than baseline
+.28 pts Pen 1 better than baseline
TOTAL SCORE: 87.73 pts = 9 Golden Arrows

Been shooting Slick Tricks for a little over a decade and have never had a single bad thing to say about them. They are incredibly well designed and built broadheads. Every few years I’ll try out something different for fun but always end up going back to the Trick.

I like to shoot lots of broadheads, and I have shot the vipertrick quite extensively and have found it to be the best flying fixed head out of any I've tried. I was really expecting a 10 ring, I'm very surprised at your accuracy result. Such a great idea to test that way. Thanks for all the great info!

Might be that he's shooting at a higher fps than your are, that can make a huge difference for the accuracy of some broadheads.

As I got older in life, I switched from a 70 pound compound bow shooting 3-blade Muzzy broadheads that I shot for decades to a 60 pound compound shooting the Slick Trick Viper Trick. Once I went from Muzzy to ST VT, & I stopped looking at anything else. My search was done. The Viper Trick offers excellent penetration for a lower poundage shooter. I feel the Viper Trick is almost like a cut-on-contact fixed blade broadhead, but it still has removable blades that are easy to sharpen. I also like their accuracy with my set up. I shot a doe last September, and I heard her crash within 50 yards. Heavy vegetation prevented me from seeing her drop. I shot a nice 11 pointer in early November. He took about 5 jumps after the shot. He stopped to look at his side, legs started wobbling , and he flipped over backwards about 35 yards from my stand. I don't think he knew what hit him. I don't believe a small hatchet has to be thrown at a deer. These broadheads are easy to keep sharp & slice through the chest cavity with ease. I like watching your test reviews, but I will never change broadheads in my lifetime. Viper Tricks check all the right boxes for me. If I become a crossbow hunter some day, I may shoot something larger (mechanical). Thus, it's good to always process new information. I like the design of Slick Trick broadheads, & I feel the Viper Trick is an excellent choice for lower poundage shooters. The angle of the main blades aren't as steep as the Standard or Magnum, & the steel ferrule is still strong enough. Thanks for your review! It's a good option to consider.

It is and has always been a great deep penetrating broadhead. It out penetrates most fixed 3 blade broadheads, but has 4 blades. Personally I do prefer the larger 1 1/4'' Grizztrick or the 1 1/8'' Magnum but if all the store had was the Viper trick I'd buy them with confidence.

3 blades generally penetrate poorly compared to a 4 blade because of the pyramidal shape.

@@DavidCovine Yes & No. It really depends on the shape of the head. Surface area causes friction & friction causes drag in the target leading to less penetration. If all the blades on a 3 blade are the same suface area of every blade on a 4 blade there is more grag on the 4 blade & it will tend to penetrate less. However, on a 4 blad with 2 full diameter blades and 2 smaller blades the surface are may be less or the same as a 3 blade.

That broadhead had a little wobble to it and it its defense if the o-ring was rotated and the broadhead reseated tightly it would have flown much better. There was a definite gap between the o-ring and in half-out

lol, after seeing this video, I got a couple of my sons heads and shot them on my setup. They both flew perfectly with the field point. No tuning etc. But also my setup is tuned with the Slick Trick standards, which have taken a lot of critters over many years. I thinking my pass thru hit rate is like 99%

Really apreciate your tests. Nobody else shows performance differences between the tricks. Ive killed with gruzz, magnum, standard and viper. Havent noticed any difference. Viper are in my quivernow. Always cane down to what was on sale.

Nice test and video as always. I have been using Viper Tricks for the best five years and they have worked well. The accuracy test was interesting. In my experience, the VT has been the easiest to tune out of all the fixed broadheads that I've used including Slick Trick Mag and Standard.

I find the magnums to fly better and have a stronger ferrule. The ferrule on the grizztrick and viper trick are longer and thinner which makes them slightly less durable. I also found the viper trick to hiss very loud in flight. If quiet in flight is what you want out of a fixed blade broadheads, the qad exodus full blade is the most quiet I have found.

A fairly inexpensive head that just gets it done. With a tuned bow/arrow setup these will destroy your field tip arrows. Shoot them wisely lol. Even at 60#’s, 436 grains they will blow thru 180# pigs. They perform about as good as it gets.

It's a great broadhead except for 1 thing, and why I don't shoot them, is they lack in bloodtrails. Killed a Axis buck, ram, and hog with them and the bloodtrail was almost non-existant. On the axis buck I heard him crash and he only made it 45 yards or so but no blood. The ram had some blood but it was very little. Luckily, I saw him go 60 yards lie down then get back up and move 10 yards then expire, all in a 10 min time frame. The hog went about 50 yards and there was very little blood again. All lung shots from about 15ft high. I really wanted to like them but after 3 animals with them and the bloodtrails being non-existant on 1 and very little on the other 2 I was done with them.

Thanks for sharing your experience. There are so many factors that affect blood trails. They make almost 2" of cut in whatever they penetrate; whether that includes an artery or not or how high the shot is in the lungs, or how the animal moves all affect bloodletting.

@LuskArcheryAdventures Yes there are a few variables that play in bloodtrails but 3 for 3 of bad bloodtrails was enough for me to move to better choices. I've had better success with ST Mags. But I don't shoot them anymore. Qad exodus and G5 Megameats is what I shoot now in 125gr. I will be trying the b3 destruct max in 125gr this year and I'm thinking about giving the sevr 1.75 a try. But the G5 Megameats are devastating. Especially on hogs 125 and under in size. I know the blades at thin and bend but the leave a huge hole and blood is everywhere. Thanks for your reviews John! One thing I'm curious about is when you sighted in the cross bow for the field point shot did you shoot a 100 gr head? I've noticed this isn't the first 125gr head that has shot low on the flight test and you are showing the same field point shot on every test. Just wondered cuz that would put every heavier head at a disadvantage on the accuracy test. I know shooting a 100gr head compared to a 125gr head out of my crossbow is going to make a difference in drop.

Does that crossbow get bullet holes in paper with the bolts you are using in the accuracy test? I find it interesting how the windage was perfect on this one, but it was a good bit low.

I've not shot it thru paper; but it is dead on with field points and most mechs. I was surprised this one didn't pinwheel it.
