In recent videos we've begun to dive into the realm of pitch design by breaking down different pitch types. In today's you'll find top of the line information on creating a nasty slider utilizing today's latest technology. A pitch that's usage percentage has nearly doubled in the MLB over the last two decades - and for good reason! Enjoy.

Hello! Other than watching your videos (duh) what are some of the best ways for beginners to enter into this field? Especially if one cannot afford an Edgetron or a Rapsodo?

Thanks for the comment! To me it depends on where you’re at and what you’re trying to do. If you’re looking for some tangible skills that can help you anywhere you go, check out my video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zrxlq7Zz35i9YXU.html There are tons of other resources to learn from, such as DrivelinePLUS. But if you’re interested in seeing more content like that on this channel let me know.

@@SimpleSabermetrics Any video you could make on the subject would be great! Baseball is my passion and I always thought that I wanted to get into some sort of Baseball Journalism but the more I read/watch about Player Development and Data Analysis, the more I love it! I actually live about a half hour away from the Driveline Facility in Kent, WA. I may go down there to pay them a visit and just absorb as much information as I possibly can.

Love the video. One question I have is what strategies you use to get a guy from throwing a very gyroscopic slider to more of a sweeping slider? I coach a few guys who struggle to get it to move more on the horizontal plane and pair up better with their fastballs.

Great question, Colton! There are a few things that can help generate more horizontal break. It will be easiest for me to explain this in a future video - so stay tuned, and thanks for the idea.

Great Video! What is the data behind slurves being less effective than true sliders or curves?
@spesh2658

Hey, I did have another question! I've been looking at Felix Hernandez's 2019 pitch movement and it seems that his slider movement doesnt move much from the 0,0 coordinate however it seems like it was one of his best pitches. He owned a .174 BAA on the pitch and an average Spin rate of 2104. Is this just a case of small sample size or does this mean that the movement from the 0,0 point doesnt correlate as much with with the final results as I thought? Maybe because he started the pitch more in the outside quadrant to a righty, that makes the pitch better even with the little pitch movement?

You’ve really done your research here! Like I said in the video, I’ve seen some nasty 0,0 sliders (or gyrospin sliders) - if it works for him then there is no reason to change it. It’s always a case by case basis, so the ability for him to control that pitch, and keep it separate from the others in his arsenal are of extreme importance in my opinion. Thanks for the awesome comment! Hopefully this answered your question.

So what does degrom throw?
@ianspringer581
@ianspringer581 3 жыл бұрын
It’s really a cutter by movement/velocity, but Statcast uses what the pitcher calls it for pitch classification, so it shows up as a slider.

I have a pitch tracker that gives: total spin, sidespin, backspin, gyro spin, and spin axis. Is it possible to use these numbers to calculate spin efficiency, and if so, what is the formula? Thanks.
@SimpleSabermetrics
@SimpleSabermetrics 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I don’t have any first hand experience with the technology you’re using, however, spin efficiency is the amount of gyrospin divided by the total spin. I’m not certain how the backspin and side spin come into play in that equation - but that is how it is calculated on Rapsodo. You should see fastballs and change ups are close to 100%, and the sliders and curveballs range in the percentages I had in this video. If those numbers seem like they’re in that range than the same calculation should work! Hopefully this answered your question - thanks for watching!

I've heard the the gyro spin can drift. Is there a way to predict how it drifts by examining the tilt and efficiency?
@SimpleSabermetrics
@SimpleSabermetrics 3 жыл бұрын
This is something I’ve heard has been observed but I haven’t found a way to predict/measure this movement. For example, some have said the reason gyro spin sliders have that sharp late break is due to the axis of the pitch drifts downwards as the pitch goes towards the plate (creating higher useful spin) causing that break. The way rapsodo measures spin direction and gyro degree can’t take into account this movement because of the positioning of the camera and the way the data is collected. I’ll definitely do some more research on quantifying this phenomenon and make a video if I find anything! Thanks for the comment!

Why do some pitchers throw both a slider and a cutter?

Why is the Slurve the least effective even without a Slider or Curve in the pitcher’s repertoire ?
@SimpleSabermetrics
@SimpleSabermetrics 3 жыл бұрын
There definitely are good slurves out there, especially if you aren’t throwing a slider to accompany it. My reasoning for this, is the average 3/4 arm slot pitcher more often than not will throw a slurve prior to any pitch design work using tech. Because it is more common than a true 12/6 or a sweeping slider, hitters see it more often and are therefore more used to it. There’s a little more data behind my decision here, but that is the condensed version. Hopefully that makes sense, thanks for the comment!

@@SimpleSabermetrics fork ball pitchers are like knuckle ball pitchers only fork balls have a little more heat. The less rotation the better. They often drop like a rock near home plate. Control is the big thing a catcher often doesn't know where the ball is going.
