Slinky, my giant monitor lizard, eats a whole chicken in today's episode. It's extremely interesting to watch how he uses his teeth and his powerful jaws to eat and digest this meal. That enclosure is honestly nothing short of amazing. They all deserve enclosures of such quality, I wish people could give their reptiles exactly this.

Ok, that was insanity. How in the world did he get that huge piece with both wings down? Was visible one second, pan to miss Sophia watching in amazement then bloop, gone! Nuts! 🤯

They have expandable throats like a snake although I think their jaw joint is solid as opposed to the snakes that is a weird collection of cartilage and wishful thinking. Remember Komodo Dragons are perfectly capable of eating antelope and cattle, although it's probably a bit of a pain to go traipsing around behind it for a week until it dies. The chunks he was scarfing down were probably about his limit so I'd not leave a lizard alone with a food item like that the first few times. Just in case. My tegu if I give her a rat as opposed to supermarket salmon knows its a (potentially alive, potentially bitey) animal and she proceeds to shake it, smack it into the wall/door/my leg until she's happy it's an ex rat... I don't have the heart to mention it's been sitting in the freezer for a few days...

Surprising he doesn't use his claws very much. Would be interesting to see Lagertha do this. She would shred the chicken.

They tend to use them as a mechanism to work against, and I suspect that a Croc monitor or any of the others would use the same method with the same physiology - although I might feed a AWM by hand there's *no way* I'm doing that with a Crocodile Monitor - even Deinonychus would take one look at that mouth and go hide somewhere quiet for a while till the trembling stopped..

I love how Sophie sits there calmly and enjoys Slinky and is not afraid to be in there she's going to be great with animals just like her dad..love Slinky enjoy watching the interactions with him

Asian Water Monitors are just my favourite lizards, having been lucky enough to see 6 foot plus specimens and even swim with a wild juvenile in Thailand they simply amaze me with their power and grace. Long live King Slinky!

@Stephanie Boyd Actually that's not the way he is "supposed" to be living, he is "supposed" to be living in the wild. But I get what you mean, if he's going to be in captivity as a pet, then this is the BEST way for him to be living.

I think its so wonderful that Sophia watches and helps u with everything. She's gonna be your little partner in crime Kenan. Lol. My daughter is about the same age they are so smart and fun at that age. They all just wanna do everything with there daddys adorable.

Just hope they survive Sophia's sulky teens or that the period is very brief for her! Teendom will determine whether or not Sophia follows in Kenan's footsteps! Just an advance warning... I have 2 sisters and can attest to this!

This is the "happiest" Slinky looks. The body posture tells you he's "enjoying" the meal. I think the only time I noticed this lizard looked "happier" was after he was introduced to the new enclosure. I saw a huge difference in his movement. He was more active than I had ever seen before and interacting/sniffing more curiously. Moving him into the new enclosure was probably the best thing Kenan ever did for Slinky. The rest of his life is going to be pretty nice. Whoever joins or eventually replaces Slinky in the enclosure is going to have a good time in the enclosure, too.

This makes me remember the practice of some poultry raisers in our province used to keep a couple of water monitor lizards. And they feed chickens that gets injured or the one the need to cull instead of burying it of throwing the dead carcass to the thrash.

Unbelievable enclosure for Slinky. I started watching you during the pandemic lockdown. I am so envious of your property and wildlife. I couldn’t even imagine walking out my front door and feeding tortoises and monitors. Your living the dream!

Its so mind blowing to see his strength and power. We see him crawling all over you like a puppy and you picking him up but watching him destroy that chicken reminds us of how strong he is and how gentle he is with you.

You are very right when you said most people make it too easy for animals in our care. You are one of the few outside of a zoo setting that have the ability to have an enclosure where Slinky can be a lizard as they are in the wild. People tend to forget these large lizards/monitors eat things of varying sizes on a daily basis, not just rats all the time. It is great to see them actually work for their food in a way and you can see Slinky looking and thinking about how he is gonna eat the prey items. As we learned before nothing is off the menu for ole Slinks! Slinky is probably one of the most natural looking water monitors ive seen as well as heard others comment on his looks since he is in great shape and not obese like other tend to get or end up with the small head looking syndrome because of how they were fed. Slinky has to use all of his tools for these large items you give him and it truly unique to watch. Thanks for sharing and educating people on these fantastic reptiles.

I think it's really cool to see how he behaves with shredding the chicken and just how he's utilizing his claws to rip it apart. He's definitely happy about having this. The cool thing is he utilizes his environment like the rocks and branches to hook his food so he can tear it easier, such smart animals and you can see it in their eyes.

KENAN!!!! This has been my favorite video that you’ve EVER done! This was absolutely amazing and he is so majestic!! Watching him rip and tear then swallow those pieces, pushing them down with those muscles in his neck, was just fantastic! Even though I’ve never met him, I love Slinky so much! Slinky videos are my favorite. I love spending time in his enclosure virtually. I do get a fear of choking when he feeds on large pieces though. Makes me nervous. Now I think I need Tums just from watching this. Lol.

Love seeing them eating more natural. Once you have Slinky staying in the area where we can watch and he’s not in soil let him have it so we can see him rip it apart. Maybe when you do the rock work inside you could build an area to feed. I saw someone mention feeding Lagetha? that would be really cool to see her eat a whole prey item.
