Slivers are coming back in Time Spiral Remastered, joining the Magic: the Gathering multiverse! In this video of Jake and Joel are Magic, Joel offers 3 different strategies (for every player) for building Slivers, each option today with its own unique commander. The three ways we are focusing on are Strong, Fun and Mean. In the strong category, we start things off with Sliver Legion: a powerful sliver that acts as a Coat of Arms for all of our Slivers, followed by fun: Sliver Queen-- a great sliver with an ability to generate slivers, and finally, the mean way will focus on The First Sliver, we cascade any time we cast a sliver! What are the best ways to build Slivers and get the most out of this crazy synergistic tribe? About the Three-Ways Series:
Some people like their chicken wings sweet while others prefer them scorching hot; either way, you are eating chicken. Magic the Gathering is a game with many different rules and building a Commander deck that works takes some time and strategy. Understanding the commander of your deck will help inform a deck-building plan that works for you. In this series, Joel discusses commander strategies for every player. This broad-strokes approach will give you a basic breakdown of the commander and three different ways you can build your deck to work with its abilities, without providing a full deck-tech.
What is Commander:
Commander, officially recognized on June 17, 2011, originated from a format called EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander-- there can only be one). The first time we played EDH was around 2009. It is easily the best way to play Magic: The Gathering. The idea was to have a casual format with 100 cards and only a single copy of any one card, with a General: a singular Legendary Creature card in its own zone that can be cast any time, once you have the mana for it. If your general is removed, it goes up by a casting cost of 2 for each time it is removed. Once WOTC officially recognized the format and printed the first Commander product, your General was instead called your Commander and instead of the format being called EDH, it instead became recognized as Commander. If you ever hear anyone say EDH, they are talking about Commander. Make sure to know the cards that are banned in the format before building your deck (listed below).

Disagree with putting harmonic sliver in the fun deck, it is not a "you may" effect and will destroy all your eldrazi monument, nim deathmantle and training grounds if you run out of targets of your opponent

First i learned about slivers. Everyone on the table hates you. The first 3 remove spells are your sliver. The first counter spell is always on your commander. The second thing i learned. If they dont do this you are most likely to win the game.

Not sure if I agree with all these non-sliver additions for the first sliver. The entire point of the first sliver is that it gives cascade to the cards that you cascade into. This allows chaining multiple cascades off of one card, i.e. casting a sliver, cascading into a second sliver which then cascades into a third sliver etc. The non-sliver cards mentioned, while having cascade themselves, will never get a similar chain going as you won't cascade into cards with cascade. Having said that, adding them does not come at a huge downside as they at least won't break your cascade chains due to their high CMC costs.

I have a high budget sliver EDH deck with overlord as the commander and all the other legendaries are in it as well. It's the best build imo cuz you can just go fetch any sliver you need in that specific situation.

Love it! My very first EDH deck ever was with the Sliver Overlord ten years ago, still near to my heart and I lucked out getting the 5-color super slivers before they went bonkers with the price.

Great video! Just awesome. I love Slivers. Some Sliver friendly cards I use across my various Sliver decks: Aluren, Patriarch's Bidding, Mana Echoes, Intruder Alarm, Shared Animosity and Cloudstone Curio. Aluren & Cloudstone Curio in a First Sliver build is amazing. Even without Aluren, using Slivers as mana dorks with Gemhide Sliver, Manaweft Sliver or Cryptolith Rite and Intruder Alarm in addition to some card-drawing effects like Dormant Sliver, Guardian Project and/or Kindred Discovery create another game-winning engine. Of course, the tried-and-true combo of Sliver Queen and Mana Echoes tugs at the heartstrings. Thank you for this video!

@@JakeandJoelareMagic Yes. I have an EDH First Sliver deck: tappedout.net/mtg-decks/sliv-like-theres-no-tomorrow/ as well as a couple of kitchen table decks. One is Selesnyan and plays four copies of Muscle, Sinew, Predatory, Poison, Quick, Plated and some Bonescythe Slivers. The second is a 5-color kitchen table deck focusing on sacrifice effects and then casting Living Death. The EDH deck is my favorite, but Sliving Death is not far behind!

If you're going for token value with the Sliver Queen, use Ashnod's Alter and any of the ability reducing cards, and you have infinite mana. Also, just an FYI....just because a card is a shapeshifter, they don't count as all creature types. Thats an ability that alot of shapeshifters have called Changling.

Honestly Sliver Overlord is far better since it can fetch any specific sliver you want for any situation. Also include cards like Steely Resolve and Call to the Kindred to protect and fetch more slivers.

I like the combo Sliver Queen, Heartstone, Gemhide, and Heart Sliver, infinite slivers in a turn, add in screeching for mill, necrotic for destruction, psionic to just kill the other player, and/or quick sliver to do it all on the opponents turn

another crazy way is sliver queen mana echoes, ( mana engin ) the combo prior to youre 2nd build with the red one that if there delt dmg they deal that amount of dmg to a player or a plaineswalker, using star of extenction also could be a bigger dmg boost at 20dmg to all creatures in play

Lavabelly sliver is the MVP in most of my Sliver games. especially if I have some way of producing token slivers. I'm also a big fan of Ameboid Changling with Sliver Overlord for when you want to be properly mean...

Haste, tap for 1, sack for 2, sliver queen, overlord to tutor for them. Or, training grounds and sac for 2.

Only major cards I think you left out with the Overlord build are Morophon the Boundless and Mana Echoes. They basically let you tutor and cast any sliver in your deck for a total of 2 mana, which can be easily reduced to a single mana as you outlined. Naturally there are a few slivers this won't work on that require more than one of a given colour of mana, but being able to cast the remaining three legendary slivers for a total of three mana is insane, especially with all the cascade effects they cause.

My personal sliver brew is the first sliver. It runs every single suspend spell with no casting cost. That means it has no cmc, and can be cast without suspending it when you cascade into it. The deck wins by puking out a ton of slivers, including a spiteful sliver, and wiping the board with a star of extinction, blasphemous act, or chain reaction. Not sure if it's strong, fun, or mean, but i love it :)

@@JakeandJoelareMagic yeah has a pretty solid win rate in my playgroup. That doesn't necessarily mean a lot, but plays out pretty well. Basal sliver is a secret all-star in the deck, creating 25-30 black Mana sacking your whole board, then using something like soothsaying to stack the top of the library, then something like patriarch's bidding to replay everything sacked and finishing with a damage spell.

Queen is my commander My infinite combos are Queen + mana echoes = with Queen and echoes out the moment you use her ability (and assuming u have 1 other sliver on the field) it's infinite sliver time Myr galvanizer + palladium myr Power artifact + Grim monolith or basalt monolith I will now be adding the one you have shown! Infinite mana and the many ways to get it makes it fun always looking for a combo piece has me at the edge hoping it sticks

Sliver control deck: Telekinetic sliver: All sliver have "tap this creature to tap target permanent" Use this during your opponents upkeep to tap all their lands so they have no mana. As long as you have more slivers than they have land, you win! Commander is the sliver overlord since we need this one specific card to be this mean.

Depends on how much money you wanna spend... Lands can be expensive. I use all the pay 2 life ones (shock lands) (Check lands) works well with any dual named land All the dual snow covered And the triome lands If I have more then 1 opponent I switch the check lands with battle bond lands. If you have the money switch shock lands with true duals managathering.com/desktop/desktop.html

The EVIL Way: The Setup: Sliver overlord + Manaweft/Gemhide + Root + Crystalline (If you're lucky or strategize well this can be done by turn 4-5) At this point you're free to pull Morophon, the Boundless and cast it, reducing cost of all slivers by WUBRG Use Sliver Overlord to pull The big bad four (but only need The First Sliver + Sliver Queen) from your deck and cast them for free (Morophon) Once TFS and Queen are in play you can either pull from deck (or cast from hand) Cloudshredder. free cast and cascade for 1, pulling Training grounds out onto the battlefield. (If TG is the only 1 cost spell in your deck you're 100% guaranteed to cascade for it.) Sliver overlord search for 1, pull Lavabelly, cast it for 1 (And cascade) Sliver queen>Sliver tokens>Tap4mana>More tokens>Infinite Lavabelly trigger GG

Does anyone have advice on building two Slivers decks: one that's overwhelming but emphasizes the "All Slivers have X" cards, and another deck that runs Sliver Overlord and prioritizes "Slivers you control have X" cards? I'd like to have the first to make people angry, and then lend them the second to put me in my place by benefitting from my cards' abilities as well as their own :D

Personally I run overlord as the commander for the toolbox effect it gives my deck also Why not run ashnods altar/ basal sliver instead of golem and death mantle for infinite mana? With any of the activation reductions (and you’ve got three of em) it goes infinite and your much more likely to have that go off than the golem mantle combo.. or just run all three

@@JakeandJoelareMagic that’s fair lol and it’s the first commander deck I’ve ever built however it’s been more of a budget casual build since the playgroup I play with has been more casual up until the last two years where It’s gotten very competitive so I built a nekusar deck that holds up very well while I work on upgrading my sliver deck with the most recent editions being queen and mana echos and food chain

I haven't tried Overlord myself, I started with First Sliver for a long time and now trying out Hivelord First Sliver is super explosive, removal magnet - Overlord is slow but durable (especially once you attach Hexproof or Shroud) I just don't have the cost reduction to really make Overlord pop off

Sliver Overlord is the better commander. I have my sliver commander built to counter things. I have the First Sliver in it, but it will never be my commander. The mean way is to use Overlord to to get out the slivers you want. Not just random slivers. Search up whatever sliver you want. Got a Mana Echoes in play? No problem. Search for Sliver Queen. I made so many people scoop.

I'm thinking of making a random Sliverbase, and taking 35 random slivers from a collection that will hopefully eventually include every sliver I can afford and proxies of the expensive ones(In playgroups that are okay with them only of course.), then shuffling those randomly into the deck to have the slivers I play with change each game.

Enjoyed your content. I would have liked some discussion about how to pilot the decks. EDH is very political and social. If you come out with your strong deck and start punching one(?) of you opponents in the face, you'll probably be in a 1 v. 3 scenario pretty quickly. Deck building, and winning play, are two different things. IMO

Completely agree... I might make a video on piloting in edh. If it's talking general piloting, what would you wanna see in that vid?

@@JakeandJoelareMagic , I would like to see general discussions about board state. Determining who the threats are and how to overcome certain deck strategies. I am not one of those players who needs to win every match, but I don’t want to get blown out of the water every time either. Slivers, to use your example, is a pretty straightforward, in your face deck that doesn’t react well to your opponents. You have to use extra card slots for counter spells and removal spells. If not, one Enchantment can completely stall you out. So, maybe discuss those extra cards that make the deck playable. Assume you have 40 Slivers, 40 Lands, and maybe 8 mana rocks. That doesn’t leave much room.

Its slivers....once your opponents see that, its automatically a 1vs3 lol.
