Gabor is back with part TWO of the SLO amp sim shootout - and this time around all the amp sims use the same Celestion Plus/Digital IRs...which one did you like best??
The plugins used in this shootout are once again the Neural DSP & AmpliTube versions of the SLO-100...PLUS...Gabor also included the Solstice Solo 100 by STL AmpHub which is also based on the Soldano SLO-100!

The thing about Amplitube 5 is that IR cabs vastly outnumber the choices in other 2; and switching those along with the mic and room will change the sound, drastically. You don't even really need to tweak for a long time to find a tone that you like. Each 4x12 cab in Amplitube 5 uses arond 2400 IRs and there are many, many to chose from, as well as being able to load the cabs with different speaker combinations. The Neural does sound great but Amplitube is an amazing and deep option and for the price a no brainer.

Sure, there's a lot of choices, but as an amplitube user, I always find them very dark to the point of making you doubt if the model is actually accurate or not. Lately i decided to try amplitube with custom irs. Got tired of trying to tweak all the time and do crazy eq moves trying to get the sound as bright as real world speakers.

@@teriakamoto well i tried with nad ir, but i found that i have just 2 mics working stereo. So i was looking for a better solution and i found Libra, from ignite amps... you can load up to 8 irs and blend them to taste, and a clever feature, export a single ir with the mix you did on libra. With that i intend to mix speaker and mic combinations and also a room mic ir. I'll try it hopefully this week.

FYI Neural is apparently modeling the SLO100 MKII, while both AmpHub and Amplitube models are based on the "classic" circuit. The MKII circuit has a different gain staging and a little different voicing (resulting in more gain/saturation and a slightly darker tone, just as showed in this video), plus it solves 2 of the main "issues" of the original SLO100 circuit: 1) the infamous fx loop configuration being always in the way and affecting the tone in a not-so-good way (albeit being considered one of the signature characteristics of the SLO sound) has been completely redesigned and made bypassable. 2) the Clean channel "bleed" into the OD channel causing phase cancellation (the Clean channel is 180° out of phase in the "bleeding" junction) and a different mids response has finally been removed. Plus, the Depth control wasn't in the original SLO100 design, it was originally a mod and has been added to the official version later on. All these changes have a pretty big impact on the final sound. Just wanted to point this out as people may be lead to think that the 3 models are based on the exact same circuit while they're not and this partly explains the noticeable differences.

Thanks for the review I think they are all quite similar through the two tone IR loader yet I did notice that you weren’t using the room mic option which gives you level, mic spread and room mic choices all found in the Amplitube 5 Max application you can also swop out speakers and cabinet mics in the cabinet option screen. I do agree that the Neural preset is immediately convincing its like being there IK’s model is more like listening in a control room. I think amplitube through the same IR sounds the most natural of the three. The neural with stock cabs sounds clearer and louder somewhat so it's maybe better, but through the same IR...The neural has more gain and fizz the amplitube actually reminds me of my own soldano somewhat.

Yes, agree. After comparing the Amplitube 5 SLO100 to the Nueral DSP version, I was ready to shell out the money for the Neural. But changing cab IRs, or even just cabs within Amplitube, really brings the Amplitube version to life. Given that I already own and like Amplitube, I've now changed my thinking on paying for the Neural DSP version. Would be money wasted when i can get such good results within Amplitube. Now, if I didn't already own Amplitube, it might be a different story. I do have the Neural DSP Granophyre, which is great. I bought that on impulse after downloading and comparing all of the Neural trial plugins. I liked the plugins so much that I figured I should own at least one of them, and the Granophyre's tone just did it for me.

Cool video. I've become a Neural DSP fan ever since Nameless. I think I'll be grabbing a copy of the Jeff Loomis JST, but otherwise I'm using a lot of Neural DSP (Nameless, Gojira, couple others here and there, Parallax on bass, after I sold my Ampeg SVT 4 pro). It seemed like early on that the Neural DSP was the only one that did not sound overly fuzzy and sizzling at a higher gain level, even though the level on the control was set lower. I kind of lost track of what you were doing, but it seemed like you're having some problems getting a good sound, and I never have any problems getting a high gain tone out of the Neural software, and never have issues of flubbiness or muddiness or too much sizzle or fuzz on top of it. Time for me to clean up and get back to work, I've got 5 guitars and 4 basses to be built, and starting today, videos to be made documenting the build processes. Wish you well, good luck sorting out the tones, whichever you choose you definitely will be able to create some really good tones

I bought Amplitube 5 and it does have a very good tone, but I have to say there is something about it that feels stiff when I play it, like I'm having to work too hard with my fingers, some other sims seem better under the finger, cant really explain that. The other thing with sims is the high treble fizz which is awfull, I use a combination of cab sims that helps, but I think we could do with more cab sims with more flexability on the market.

Neural DSP is still reigning I would say. An actual SLO is rich, full, and loaded with harmonics, and the Neural DSP seems to come closest to capturing that. That said, the external IR, or even just tweaking the cab/mic in Amplitube made a massive improvement. Same with the external IR for the STL, it puts it much closer. Both wound up sounding very good, but still slightly behind the Neural DSP overall I think. Although in a full mix, the differences would probably become more minimal. And the others are more full featured suites, whereas with Neural DSP you are just getting the one amp, so there are pluses and minuses. Excellent job as always!

How are you recording without pickup up the guitar noise and pick noise? I own a PodGO & there are 3 "Soldano" options (Solo Lead Clean, Crunch & OD). Have you messed with any of the Line-6 stuff compared to these plugins? I'm just wondering if I can ultimately get the same tones on the PodGO by noodling a bit & changing cabs or IR's. What I like about the Neural is that it seems to be ready to fly with the presets and minor tweaking. But I've also seen a few comments about the Neural taking up resources on a PC. So in the end, since I've already invested money into the PodGO and also already have the Amplitube Sodano plug in.... is it just a waste of time investing in the Neural? My conclusion: The ampsim in Amplitube is a tiny bit more realistic than the one in the Neural Plugin but you have to work way harder to get a usable sound. You do have to tame the lowend with Amplitube even with the external cabsim though and Neural just has the presets that are ready to record, which is perfect for this day and age. For average musicians and hobbyists, Amplitube 5 is great bang for the buck ,average consumer will find a way to make what they have to make it better.Having all these amps + great convolution plug ins and IR should be the next step and if one is lazy enough not to spend less and get the tone they want for so much money then be my guest. External IR helped the others out quite a bit though. I think it's all just preference. Could probably get STL and A5 to do what I want with some pre EQ and post EQ before the IR. Either way it's a great time to be a plugin guitar player. Great followup vid

I just bought Neural DSP SLO-100 and man I couldn't put my guitar down the presets are amazing and I have a heap of plugins. I think this will become a favourite quickly. And I like ML Sound Labs and have all the others guitar rig (This is the worst!) Bias FX and not a fan either if I am honest, I like STL Tonehub sounds but Amphub not as good as the ML or Neural. I use Captor X for my tube amps. So for me ML Sound Labs and Nueral are the best sounding and best feel. ML Sound lab Miko and 2 Notes Wall of sounds are also awesome

Late to the party but in observation, the comparison may have not been completely in parity. Perhaps if the input setting were addressed may have impacted the gain for each ampsim. However, NeuralDSP seemed a more quality product in this comparison.

The IK Multimedia one is very reliable, now worth the price cause it is into Amplitube 5 MAX packing (not before) DSP one is more natural and superior. Difference is subtle, it is about Impulse Responses mainly. Neural is the option if you want the Soldano real sound, but Amplitube is more a must of if you want a good and wide palette of sounds. The Custom Shop models by Mesa, Orange, Carvin and Soldano are really good for price if you buy MAX version.

I have used AmpliTube 4 and 5 and they have got great visual effects but nowhere near to the sound quality of stl, by watching this video it will be very difficult for the viewers but without personally trying such videos give you some sort of deceptIve view since the person tests the software is such good guitarist so they make everything sound good.

I don't care how much content these sims throw at you, what matters is quality for recording and the nDSP just blows the others out of the water. Amplitube has a lot of features but it has that very digital breakup sound, fizzing on top of everything and it's not easy to EQ out because it's not just a small range of frequencies, it's pretty much artifacting throughout the whole spectrum. So, nDSP would get my money.

25 years ago Line 6 was sitting with a scope, and their ears and trying themselves to match the sound and get a good transfer function. The modern ones are done using A.I. Think of it like the Line 6 tech was IBM's Deep Blue II, able to defeat humans, with its super-powered human-created computations. The modern sims are the stockfish on our phones, designed and tuned by A.I. that can totally thrash Deep Blue II with a fraction of the computing power. They're night and day different. Their first Variax had no transfer functions at all, just eq settings labeled different types of acoustic guitars.

11:14 Does Two Notes pay you? Because if not - they should. The one thing for me personally about most amp sims is that there's almost always some sort of weird fizzle in the high end and trying to EQ it out usually removes the full range/open sound of the guitar. For the last year and a half I've been barely playing and stopped doing session work. The only amp I have to record right now is a Dumble SSS clone which sounds and records absolutely amazingly when you want the thing that amp does. I have a slew of plugins and use different ones for different things, but getting back into doing session work again after a long break and not being attached to any specific workflow right now, I'm absolutely grabbing the Two Notes Wall of Sound and STL Amphub. I've never been sold so fast on a piece of software before.

The Two Notes stuff is amazing…I’ve been a long time user of various Torpedo load box and IR loaders and the Wall of Sound! They don’t pay us but we have been working with them for a little while now …I just think they make genuinely great stuff!! Look into their Captor X, it makes recording so much more consistent and easier. Alex, the other guy in most of our videos was very sceptical at first - he’s a bit of an analogue guy - but he loves using that stuff now too!!

@@TSFAHTPS True! I appreciate the recommendation. I’ve looked into reactive load boxes before but never had a use for it before with just the one amp I have, considering I have a 2x12 G12-65 cab that pairs very well with it. BUT I didn’t realize how good can IR’s actually are now and that there was a plug-in like that. I have a few individually sourced can IR’s but this vid opened my eyes to how much more use I could get out of all my other amp plugins with Wall of Sound. Knowing Wall of Sound is that good it’s definitely possible that I’ll start investing in some amp heads when work gets going again because the number one concern for me that drove me to plugins for work in the first place is cab recording volume, and I move a lot so building a good isolation cab that’s mobile has been a struggle lol.

To be fair: 1) In reality, if you have an amp, just changing the cab and mics makes a huge difference. The presets for these 3 plugins are having different cabs and mics, so you cannot compare them. 2) Even if you're using the same cabsim, the amps sims are different because they were modeled from different SLO's. Again, even in reality 3 different SLOs would sound different, so you'd need to adjust the knobs. So...the video is interesting, but it doesn't prove that an amp sim sounds better than others.

Amplitube smashes Neural but your settings are not near dialed in where Nueral is so basic that it only has its one trick pony sound. Neural where you can own an unrealistc overpriced manipulated sound, or for the cost of just 2 amps on Neural (LOL!) you can own literally every piece of gear worth owning since the beginning of music....lol One uses about 25 million in processing equipment over millions of samples of each slight adjust to the setting, or go with Neural where you get less than 200 samples from one single receiving device that any of us could own per amp and all of the companies profit is put in to sleek appearance and advertising on the internet to convince people to pay almost retail for the the real thing. Free software updates you say ? That is why nothing improves as they got your sale 10 years ago and there is zero incentive to waste time on making the experience you paid for a decade ago. Basic business folks. Also listen up folks Neural sounds killer off the rip yet no amp without settings touched ever sounds killer when its plugged in ?!? That is called manipulating your base by fluffing sound. That tells you its artificial immediately. Next time put a real amp up to compare and watch where each stacks...
