@@DieselandIron you are doing a really great free thing. I have guys on my "ditch digging" crew that is driving trucks for me that paid a school thousands of dollars of tuition learning what you could have taught them 30 minutes a night for free! Keep it up! Knowledge is always a good thing.

New operator in trade school here, was wondering how do I stop making valleys/humps on a slot? Our assignment is to have a slot that is flat with a pile at the end we can drive over with the dozer.

Seat time! This is the hardest skill to learn in a dozer. The best advice I can give you is to slow down a bit until you are able to grade smooth. Once you can grade smooth, bump your speed up a little and do it again. Bump your speed and do it again. Eventually, with enough time, you will be grading in 3rd gear all day long!

Hoping to get into the heavy operating union here in Illinois. Any advice on where to go to learn the industry in the meantime? Grew up on a farm and have always been familiar with running equipment.

If you are dead set on being in the union, then find the nearest union hall to you and apply for an apprenticeship.

While you are waiting I would start applying to small to mid sized companies and start getting some seat time under your belt. The apprenticeship program can be a little difficult to get into right now with all of the Covid stuff going on. I wouldn't let the union hold you back from starting your career.

Do you still reply to comments? I want to know if you have a video on handling angles when matching what you have. Like at 9:24 you are pushing the top soil on your right side forward to the little mountain. How do you handle when the dozer starts to tilt a bit because the right side is higher than the left? Wouldn't it cause accidental cutting on the left side of the blade unless you tilt the blade back to center? Or would it not do that because you are taking that material away, preventing the dozer from tilting?

Why not windrow the top 6” or so of soil first to loosen it then get under it?

The material is hard all the way down. With this hard packed clay there isn't any getting under it unfortunately.

Ok, thanks They are turning farm land into a parking lot type of area. I don't work a dozer but I use this technique to move snow long distances with a wheeled loaded. Like in a big parking lot. The bank on each side holds the snow in front of the blade.

If you don't have access to equipment you can rent one. Outside of that you would need to hire in at a company to train you or attend a trade school.

Why wouldn’t you windrow the topsoil and use a loader to pile? Either you don’t have a loader or you love wearing out undercarriages prematurely.

I just love wearing out the undercarriage. I actually go home in the evenings and heat my house by burning dollar bills because I have that kind of wealth to throw around.

@@DieselandIronIt’s easy to pick out the nonsite work people. Think everything is worthy of a pan or automatics along with a loader just to strip some topsoil lol. Don’t want to use the dozer and wear out the undercarriage now. Especially because they aren’t made to ever be used ever because you might wear out the undercarriage lol. Automatics on a little topsoil stripping job lol. That’s gonna be an expensive model!

Start stripping close to to the pile and work towards your back. Your wasting time, fuel , and machine pushing so far!

That's exactly what I did. Everything out in front of the machine in the slot had already been stripped which is why I was taking time to build up a good sized pile to push down the slot.
