Slovakia is in shock - one day after a gunman tried to take the life of its prime minister. Robert Fico remains in a stable but serious condition tonight. The controversial pro-Russian leader was accused of deepening the political divide within his country. Now, as people from across the political spectrum wish him well, there are hopes that Slovaks' shared outrage could lead to a less polarized society.
For more on this, we talk to Viktória Bellová. She reports for the Slovakian TV news channel RTVS and joins us from the capital Bratislava.
And we talk to our Correspondent Jack Parrock, who is outside the hospital where Robert Fico is being treated.

He already did. When he got back into power, he fired all the professional guards and hired his loyal, unskilled staff, as well as all other positions, all investigators of his crimes, and directors of state-owned companies. This is a person who places unqualified but loyal people everywhere, which results in such outcomes.

It is so obvious that Victoria is enormous scared that she doesn't report accurately on this. The video of the perpetrator has indeed leaked out and we all know what he said, but despite that she doesn't repeat it and stays vague. That should say more than enough about the 'climate' there. Slovakia has become a dangerous place, sadly.

Of course they blame the media for inflaming things... However, Slovakia is lucky to have freedom of speech. They score very high on the freedom index. However, regardless of its freedom, I do not condone violence at all.

My sympathies to the Slovakian people from Hungary! Hopefully your oligarchs will tone things down a bit now and won't do the same things ours did/already do, like buying up the media creating an echo chamber where everyone else's voice is stifled or flat-out muted. These Putin-lovers love to cement their rule and it is incredibly hard to remove them from power through legal means, especially if the media gets compromised fully. I wish you guys well!

Spoiler alert - rhey won't. They are already accusing oposition and independent media that it's their faukt Fico was shot. At the same time, tbe very same oposition leaders and independent media are telling us ti be calm and to not express our opinions towards Fico and his.mafia henchmen in this critical moment. So in short - Fico's oligarchs are using this oportunity to mute the oposition down while oposition is mjting itself down preemptively, thus surrendering to the oligarchs and their plans to steal the country's freedom. I am afraid, that after this Slovakia will become a dystopian country with dismantled media and kther democratic principles.

The Slovak society has been extremely polarised for years and Fico has been one of the most divisive figures in Slovak politics, but of course, almost everyone has condemned this assassination attempt. All the major public figures and politicians have said after the assassination attempt that this polarisation absolutely has to stop and that we must now work towards some kind of national reconciliation, but only time will tell if this effort will be successful. A lot of people are not very hopeful that it will be.

Slovenská spoločnosť je naozaj extréme polarizovaná...najrozdeľujúcejšími postavami sú súčasná opzícia (liberálno-progresívna ) a "ich" média,spnzorované oligarchami .terajšia opozícia sa nevie zmieriť s prehrou v parlamentných voľbách a voľbou nového prezidenta.Fico nieje pro -ruský,Fico je za politiku na všetky 4 svetové strany.

Basically what is happening... Slovak society is divided between 2 groups. Half of Slovaks are more western oriented while second half sees us more closer to Russia. This have been going for years. Politicians were for years escalating situation, blaming people with different views, attacking and mocking other side. It is so bad that there are families not talking to each other because of that. I think this what happened was definitely expected... I deprecate what happened and I hope Fico will be fine. But I definitely wasn't suprised what happened. Main politicians are asking people to calm down now but there are politicians still trying to use this situation for their benefits so not sure how it will go...

This whole unfortunate incident is not surprising and again demonstrates that ALL leaders have an obligation and responsibility to choose their words carefully and act in the interest of ALL people - not their own agenda or ego. They place their own lives at risk. It only requires ONE person (the shooter) to act this way especially in a heavy polarised environment in this manner.

The bodyguards have been inadequately trained, that is given; they never assumed such violence in SK could be expected, as it never ever happened. They learned their lesson now, hope will perform serious drills and training to get the required skills until planted to minds, skin and bones…

He strongly condemns Russia for violating international law by attacking Ukraine. He just didn't want to provide more weapons to Ukraine. He has also had several meetings with the Ukrainian government about humanitarian aid for the Ukrainian people but he didnt wanna fuel to UA more weapons

Four slugs to the gut is almost always fatal; no matter how quickly you get to surgery. If he is really out of life threatening danger, he is beyond lucky. The speed to the hospital and the skill of the medical staff is all that kept him from Valhalla. Many in the West either shrugged their shoulders or celebrated upon learning of this news. I'm sure he will note every single one of them should he recover enough to return to his duties one day.
