Timor-Leste may only be a tiny peninsula in the Indian Ocean, but it is in a strategically important position off the coast of Australia and is seeking closer relations with major economies, particularly China. When Jose Ramos-Horta was inaugurated last year as East Timor's fifth president since the country's independence in 2002, the Nobel laureate pledged to build closer ties with Beijing. The country has since signed a strategic partnership with China, giving China more access to a region where it fiercely competes with the US for greater influence. “The Chinese are very interested in developing our gas field,” Ramos-Horta told DW's Asia-Pacific bureau chief Georg Matthes adding that he is convinced that “China is not a threat to anyone.”

East Timor had a colonial mentality. We shouldn't learn from them. Ask other countries in the South East Asia region who fought the colonialism and imperialism for a long time then got independence. Already proved it struggled in vary difficult situations and periods.

Portugal (de jure) as administrator never recognized East Timor independence in 1975 nor the Integration of East Timor to Indonesia. They left East Timor, there was vacuum power then. Meanwhile (de facto) East Timor integrated into Indonesia as their province, with (de jure) willingness of East Timorese people represented by major alliance parties. The United Nation still recognized Portugal as the administrator during Decolonization process in East Timor. Until the restoration day of independence of East Timor in 2000.

They had a decent partner in achieving that. The Indonesian civil society, at that time, were very strong and united. It has a clear enemy, Soeharto. The Timorese are their allies, almost brother in arms, not enemies. They, the civil society and media, managed to convince the influential echelon of military to at least not go against them and by that, the courses of history. The Israeli civil society just cannot see that they're on the wrong side of history by keep on supporting Netanyahu and his bloodthirsty cabinet.

Some Indonesians may still harbor a (post)colonial attitude towards the East Timorese. However, many Indonesian activists & students in the pro-democracy movement were also actively supporting Timor Leste's independence in the 1990s - thanks to the number of Timor Leste students who were studying at Indonesian universities in the 1990s, who disclosed the atrocities committed by the Indonesian military. Even part of Ramos Horta's maternal family has roots in neighboring Kisar island (in Indonesia's Maluku province). So Timor Leste's relation with Indonesia has more nuances than imagined by those the West.

Half of them are TL students studying in cities like Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, and Denpasar. While the other half has called Indonesia as their second home thanks to their marriage with Indonesian citizen driving them to stay in Indonesia or simply because now they are now working in Indonesia.

Most Timorese leaders are Portuguese descent they are racist and cannot stand being under the rule of asian people. Even Xanana said if timor leste had not been independence he would have been a fish seller instead of president. Independence is just a personal ambition of timor leste Portuguese descent leaders. Most timorese realized that today that since breakway from Indonesia they got even poorer than before. Everything is more expensive as all are imported while wages are stagnant since independence.

GDP/GRP PPP per capita 1995 Indonesia: $ 4,490 East Timor: $ 1,632 NTT: $ 1,555 2010 Indonesia: $ 8,430 Timor Leste: $ 1,948 NTT: $ 2,788 2024 Indonesia: $ 16,861 Timor Leste: $ 3,767 NTT: $ 4,853 Note that Timor Leste economy was boosted by oil export in mid 00s until it's almost depleted now, on average it funded 80% of their govt budget. While NTT main economy is tourism, agriculture, and mining. So your statement that there's a "huge difference" before & after their independence is just non sense. They are now lagging behind NTT when they used to be slightly better in 1995. Which is actually expected from a new country like them, and it does reflect in the actual stats and data.

The Difference with Indonesia is they let you join in Republic give East Timor support their life, theach, even give treat and love more and Indonesia don't take your oil. Very intelligent guy, and seems to be a good statesman for a budding small state. Wisely all his focus is on people. To develop a country, the KPI is to develop your own people. For international relationship, look for friendship, not to look for enemies which is a game DW love to play. If the west had done a better job, they wouldn’t have run to the Chinese. The Chinese only got rich in the 2000’s. Before that the west had all the chance to help them. Even now, the west has the chance to help Haiti, Nicaragua, Gabon etc etc. There are so many countries that need help… China can help some, USA can help some, Eu can help others…

These poor countries do much better than if they relied on IMF or World Bank or America. Most of their very bad debt are actually with the West. It is a fa that Sri Lanka's debt with China is only about 10%. The rest are to ' your good friends ' who you seem to support and admire. Stop politicking please.
