When I first got into slow pitch jigging I used my spinner that I had and just added on a braid top shot. once I got into it and felt more comfortable and had decided that I really wanted to be more involved that's when I went for the gear that is made specifically for slowpitch. it does make a difference to have the right here yet it's not a showstopper and it definitely won't keep you from having fun. thanks again for all your support in the channel I truly and sincerely appreciate it. Good job captain Heath! You got your share of bonitas today, not so good for the table but still fun to catch and provides great bait. Sometimes looks scary watching you by yourself fishing, handling the lines and the boat moving all the time, reminds us that not matter how experienced we are our hobby could be dangerous. As always gorgeous! Believe it or not, but I used this style of catching and didn't know it was a slow pitch jig. I absolutely agree with you - a special rod for SPJ works more correctly, but you can also use a usual vertical jig rod (I use also one).

I bougth my first slow jigging system and its was effective since first drop catching one two and three fishs togather With about 10 diffrent species . With evry fish i bring on boat . I'm at capacity for strips and chunks in my freezer, good til' the next run... that's why I was releasing them. They are my "go to" abit for almost everything. Great example of how jigging in general works. You might have more success with a center weighted jig. One of the advantages of the conventional for slow pitch is how you can slow the fall so it doesn't pitch on the way down. You can get down way faster that way. I love slow pitch! (and speed too)

Thanks for watching. It's great to hear from you. When you first get into slow pitch, I'd avoid the wrecks... You'll end up losing hardware. The deep edge of the third reef is the best place to practice and find spots out about a mile between 200 and 300 feet. Just start exploring. Good luck & tight lines ;)

You should start keeping those bonitas and get to know some of the local charters. I know of a few charters in Broward who buy them all off locals for $5/each. Good way to fund some of the day's lost tackle

The main stuff was live gogs, pilchards and blue runners, and bonito... Strips chunks and whole ones... The most consistent customers were charter captains and shark anglers.. Spent a lot of time at the docks. Especially hillsboro inlet. The day I shot this episode, i couldn't get away from the bonito i caught about 30... Which is why I was releasing them... My freezer is at capacity, I'm good until next year when the run cycles around again. Thanks again for supporting the channel. Tight lines & take care :)

Thanks for watching and asking a great question. This particular day i was just exploring the deep edge of the reef in random spots 200 to 300 feet... I try to no go in past 150.. Too many barracudas, I've lost many jigs to them. Hope this helps. Tight lines & take care ;)

Video is really informative brother. Keep them coming. I was gonna get a penn carnage 2 jigging conventional 30-80 rod and pair it with a penn fathom 2 25NSD reel with 50lb braid. Would that be a good outfit for slow pitch jigging? Thanks in advance🎣

Thanks a million for watching and asking about your setup. The reel looks solid and has a great 6:1:1 ratio, but I would spool it with 30lb braid, double you capacity at around 900 yards. Also, if you're looking at getting into slow pitch, you might want to consider a Goofish rod, it's solid product, cheaper than what you're looking at from Penn carnage, and it'll give you better action... goofishrod.com/ If you are looking for a general (jack of all trades) rod then the carnage is a smart choice but I'd considered a lighter weight range for better action on the jigging. (personally though a 7' star rod from the HandCrafted series that's $100 = more bang for your buck, in the general jigging rod selection). Now, if you already have the gear you're speaking about... Then I'd definitely give it a shot with it, just use lighter braid, it cuts through the water better and won't telescope your line out. Also, if your looking for quality jigs, consider JYG jigs, I find them to be ultra effective jygprofishing.com/ they sell everything you need. Hope this info helps. Your videos are cool and filled with life and excitement. I hate watching boring videos lol. I got the jigging carnage because you can do multiple styles of jigging with it and its really tough. The 30-80 range is the smallest for conventional but it is very thin and parabolic. Haven't taken the reel to my local tackle shop as yet to add braid to it so yea 30lb braid it is. I greatly appreciate your help and like I said, awesome videos.

Hi Heath, Another great "how to" video. When you let the jig down to the bottom, how far do you jig it up until you drop back down to the bottom ? Do you work a "zone" in the water column or bottom to the top ? How are your kids doing, now that school is open again. My best friend's grand kids are distance learning Mon, Tue & Wed and then in school on Thur & Fri. His daughter is a school teacher in a different district and she is distance teaching from home every day. Very confusing !!! Hope everyone's well. Stay safe and good luck, Mickey

Hi Mickey, thanks for watching... So the great thing about the concept behind slow pitch is you can work the whole water column, or a specific zone... I usually go all the way to the bottom, and then do a full retrieve. Thanks for asking about the kids. They are good, but I'm keeping them at full distance learning for now. The school and it's leadership in the district don't really seem to have a plan (which I can't blame them for not having) but I'm going to keep my kids safe and not send them into a Petri dish. Hi Heath, If I get a chance to go out on my friends boat, we my go to the reef. I'll try slow pitching there. The man made reef is 3-1/2 miles out and it's only 50 ft. deep. The South Jersey coast is shallow and flat. The only structures are man made until you get to the continental shelf. The water is warm ( 75 ) up here and the last time we fished the reef, we caught some Ribbon Fish. I'm glad the children are distance learning. It may not be as good as a classroom, but it's safe. Great video! I have a 5’3” shimano J-type xtra heavy jigging rod for a big spinner. With it being such a stiff rod and so short, does that affect which pound test braid I use for jigging and 150 to 400’ of water? I’m new to jigging. Thank in advance.

yes and no. For high speed veritcal jigging you'll be alright, as long as you don't mind work with the more stiff blank, but if you want some more bounce to it you'll have to get something longer and more plyable. On the other hand. That rod won't work for slow pitch. Hope this helps.

@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing OK, so my rod is for vertical high-speed jigging. The only big spinning reel I have is a penn V 8500 with 60 pound braid. That should get me fishing and then I can upgrade the reel. I’m guessing for vertical jigging I can use heavier braid. Thanks again

@Judson Holt you'll be fine... that's a hefty setup... when and if you're ready to upgrade, go with as light gear as you can... jigging can wear you out quick with heavy gear.

Heath, you said that you sometimes lose a lot of jigs to barracudas. Would a wire leader work while slow pitch jigging and still be effective?

Thanks for asking a great question. I'm sure you could use wire leader, but the presentation is downgraded a lot when you do that. So, i prefer to take my chances... Cut offs are a part of the sport, but trying to avoid them and be stealthy at the same time, is also important. Tight lines & take care ;)

Thanks for watching and asking a great question. Yes the spinning combo works great. That's what I started out with. Also, I find it works better in shallow situations, like over a reef in 70 feet or so, snapper, grouper, cobia, African pompano... everything eats it up. Always great to hear from you. Honestly... Lately I've been looking at SPJ rods from the company Goofish... Been considering getting one of them. Definitely a good product, with a good warranty, and won't hurt you in the wallet too much. Check it out online. Hope this helps.

Hey Captain Heath! I'm a new follower and in a bit of a predicament trying to understand braid weight vs rod weight. The Jigging rod I want to buy is rated for 50-100lbs and I want to use a spinning reel. Do I need to use that weight of braid for the reel or can I go with a smaller 4000-5000 reel with say 30lb braid and accomplish the same goal?

Yes you can go smaller... the guidelines on a rod are a suggestion for optimum performance, but you'll be fine... with a smaller spinner like that you can probably go lighter in the line too... on my Penn battle 5000 I have 12 lb braid... just consider that. Tight lines

My favorite rod manufacturer is "Star Rod"... they have a lifetime warranty. They make different series of rods... I like the Paraflex series for spinning reels and the Handcrafted series for conventional reels. Hope this helps. Thanks again for your support of the channel. I truly appreciate it. Personally for slow pitch jigging I like a conventional reel. For high speed vertical jigging I like to use a spinner.

Why do you use 40lb leader on 20lb line?

Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. The short answer is that I've learned through years of trials and failures. The 40 lb test helps prevent a cut off through chaffing from small tooth fish like bonito and tuna.. It gives me more of a fighting chance. I used to use 20 lb fluoro, but was loosing the battle more often than I would've liked to. So I bumped it up to 40, the hook up ratio didn't decrease, the success rate of landing fish went up. therefore, I felt comfortable enough to stick with the 40. Granted every once in a while someone with sharp teeth gets away with one of my jigs, but that's all part of fishing. Hope this helps. Tight lines & take care ;)

Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Yes, you can slow jig with a conventional rod as long as it has the shock absorbency factor to assist in pitching the jig properly. This is how I started slow pitch years ago. However, a standard slow pitch rod works better, and gives you better action. But, I made this video to expose folks to slow pitch and show them an alternative to buying gear before committing to the method. Hope this helps. Tight lines & take care ;)

Talks smack about other people only catching bonito and he proceeds to catch only bonito 😂. I'm just kidding. When the bonito thick it doesn't matter how deep you fish. It's hard to keep them off the line. Nice tutorial.
