Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit kzfaq.infoUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.

I would smash the bottom on purpose depending on the target species sometimes, kicking up sand has been used by divers to attract fish for decades

Other day mouth of raritan off the hook, we got into drop and reel porgy and weaks in 30' on 1oz metal with no tips. I was puzzled by how HOT the porgy catch was with no bait and too big of hooks yet we really almost missed no bites. The more I fish the less I use bait lol.

I run similar jigs for bsb in the cape and slay them. I run jigs from 40g-100g for them and do well. I dont feel the need to tip the hooks at all. I did have a bsb chase the jig to the surface and jump out of the water which I thought was cool.

First time halibut fishing off the west coast of Washington, we used the recommended rigs. A one pound bottom dragging ball of lead, a 3ft leader about 18 inches above the ball, and a large chunk of octopus. We drug these heavy A** weights most of the day until we each got our one-fish limit. With several hours left, I pulled out a piece of 3/4" copper pipe, 9" long, filled with lead, and a wire loop embedded into each end. A WIRE treble hook (the hooks will straighten because you will SNAG bottom) I was mocked and laughed at ($14 in mid 90's) until this jig at the bottom. Fish after fish after fish on every single drop! We had to take turns catching and releasing, because we wore ourselves out. From that day forward, we never went offshore without copper pipe jigs. We made them of various lengths and various diameters from 3/8 in to 1 in. From 4" in and length to 12" in length. Before the West Coast Lingcod population was decimated, a local told me that this is what the commercial fisherman used to catch lingcod. You should make some, or maybe somebody would supply you with some. Every species of fish in that ocean hit these lures. Pretty sure it had to do with positive ions because polished and coated with a lacquer or polyurethane turned them completely off. Shiny or corroded bare metal all worked the same.

I just picked up a jon boat with an electric old minn kota trolling motor, (got too tired of kayak paddling) I'm looking for tips on the skinny water of rhe Manasquan river - any tips for the next few cold months? Btw, if I ever see you in person I would ask for an autographed copy of my book I always carry "A Field Guide to Coastal Fishes: From Maine to Texas" even though you weren't the author, you sir are the authoritative master of catching these fish! Thanks for all you do, looking forward to hearing from you soon brother!

Elias, was wondering if you had any thoughts about flounder gigging. Never got down to your area, but have spent some time in the outer banks. Heard quite a few locals tell stories about going out at night and gigging hundreds of flounder, often with the result that they couldn't even find the means to store most of it and just dumping the majority of the catch. Kind of solves the mystery of why they need to close the season now.

I've been slow pitch jigging for 6 years. Always offshore. I'd like to see someone slow pitch 20 to 40 ft, in a lake, bay, or inlet. I'd think it could work with 15g to 40g jigs. I've caught small Snapper, etc. in 50 to 60 ft but nothing shallower

I’m the winter time I catch specs on 20-30 feet of water all the time. It’s kind of a heat pocket with heat coming off of a bigass concrete wall that acts as a conductor, I wonder if the water near the reef could be a couple degrees warmer, they’re really sensitive to temperature down here in south Louisiana

The major craft jigs you had also come in all sorts of lighter sizes 5 to 25g. The zebra glow and pink are two of my favorites. Colt snipers are really popular here for jigging too. Just add a split ring and assist hook to the top.

The needle jigs get down quickly, usually need a faster action on the lift. The wider, flatter jigs you have are true slow pitch, more flutter on the drop, stay in the strike zone longer. Nice to see new techniques, worked great. 👏

Just wondering about your issues with the sonar unit is it the exposure to salt water that causes the problem or is it something else. I haven't experienced this with my unit it I only have access to freshwater here in the Midwest. I love your videos and am considering getting some of your swimbaits to use for musky and northern pike this coming spring.

Hey Elias, tipping the jig with squid can affect the balance of a butterfly/flat fall jig. Balance for that type of jig is very important as it affects the flutter motion that the jig has on the fall. Its actually really effective and can be used in a variety of situations. The flutter on the free fall (downward motion) is supposed to mimic an injured bait fish :) The flutter is very cool it doesn't rotate but instead if its a quality/well balanced jig it should sink shimmying side to side like a falling leaf. If you have time check out butterfly/flat fall jigs made by Shimano.
@EliasVFishing
@EliasVFishing 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree adding the squid isn’t the best presentation and will throw the jig off. However I wasn’t sure what would be available to catch this time of year. Primarily smaller black drum + tautog tend to be the main game in town for winter. Didn’t want to go out there and get the royal skunk (was close to it)

What is your opinion of adding a barrel swivel to the split ring on top to tie on your line.
@stevenmabry9834
@stevenmabry9834 3 жыл бұрын
I havent seen a need for a swivel unless in deeper water with a strong current that results in the jig trailing behind the boat. When verticle, in a managable current, increasing jig weight and decreasing line diameter is my go-to approach. Less is more, but a small swivel is certainly an option.

This was an interesting video! I'm beginning to dabble in the slow pitch/ micro jigging portion of the saltwater world and I've ordered some 10g and 20g flat fall jigs to see how they perform in that 20- 50 ft range that here in the northern south carolina southern north carolina area has so much of within 10 miles of the beach. It's a deadly tactic for many different species of fish I'll gladly pass on the information to ya once I've gathered enough to deem a decent conclusion.
