Slow Pitch Jigging Yellowfin Tuna | JohnnyJigs | Offshore Fishing
We headed offshore on the American Patriot for a 3 day long range Yellowfins Tuna trip. The big question for us is can a traditional slow pitch jigging set up handle a large yellowfin tuna. We came with the goal of getting this fish on a slow pitch outfit no matter how long it took. The trip was a success for the American Patriot and us as well. Our channel is dedicated to offshore fishing mainly slow pitch jigging. If you like this video please head over to our channel JohnnyJigs Tv and check out some more of our slow pitch jigging videos.

Didn't know what you guys were about until this video, and I'm sold. Totally the love group behind Johnny Jigs! Keep doing what you guys are doing, keep pushing this amazing technique. I've switched to mostly slow pitching jigging myself, and more people should experience the excitement of the hookset and fight with minimal gear. Johnny, I think you're totally right about the required gear. I just got back from Tortugas where I caught a 44 lb black with a Temple Reef g2, and the fight was under 2 minutes. On the other hand, a 60+ amberjack took me 18 minutes, but he was over 400 ft deep and I was tired from a big red from that same spot. I thought for sure those that a large grouper couldn't be caught on that gear. Now I'm just excited to hook a 60+!

Miguel, Thank you for taking the time to reach out. Congrats on your black. I caught a 38# amber jack on a Accurate Valiant 300 spj power 2 pro jigger over the weekend in 350' of water. I want to say it took around 5-10 minutes max. It wasn't on film so I couldn't tell exactly. I'm always amazed at what can be accomplished on such light gear. We are super fortunate and grateful to do what we do. I believe I speak for the whole team when I say Thank You and Jig On! ...Johnny

After catching a bunch of them in costa rica i noticed the fish pushing 100 plus pounds the easy game really started to change they take really deep dives and if you cant get there head flipped your in for a fight,also you dont want to put heavy drag on these fish 20 lbs is what i was told not to go above do hook pulling out.That being said i'm fairly sure you could wack one up to 100 lbs on slow pitch fairly easily,after that i'm not so sure.The california long range guys or north eastern guys may already have done this on big tuna im curious myself on just how big a fish you can actually bring in on slow pitch gear.

Great video! Here in NJ we vertical jig bluefin from 40-80 lbs with 65 lb braid on reels as small as a Shimano torium 16. From watching your videos I see you generally use much lighter braid for slow pitch. I’m putting together an outfit for slow pitch tuna here. So far I’ve got a Saltiga 15 with 330 yards of 30 lb J-braid. I’m thinking this may be too light, but still gonna try it. What rod, reel and pound test line were you using on that yellowfin? Thanks, Bob
@JohnnyJigsTV
@JohnnyJigsTV 3 жыл бұрын
Bob I love the info man Thank You. I was using 40lb yo-zuri super braid with 12' of 50lb fluorocarbon top shot. For this trip instead of using a FG knot I went with a PR for the strength. My assist hooks were Gamakatsu 620 single assist one on top and one on the bottom for the reasons that they are super strong hooks and lessened my chances of snagging a large fish making it more likely to have a successful fight. I also used a Accurate Valiant 600nn. If by the chance I did get into the 100lb class fish I'm confident I had some great stomping power but also had the line capacity to break the will of the fish if needed. Not fishing in heavy current or great depths allowed me to bump my line up from my usual 30lb test to 40lb and stay vertical for a reasonable amount of time. Thank you for your comment and I would love to hear some feedback as you get into those large tunas on SPJ outfits....Johnny

Johnny, what color and size jig did he eat? I'm from southern Louisiana not far from Venice and we have been catching big ones on some lumps just east of Venice lately with tons of chum but I'd like to throw these jigs at the Yellowfin at our floating drilling rigs off our coast during the summer time at night. Have lots of success throwing just regular butterfly jigs in a glow color but mostly just catching blackfin in the upper water column then sending that blackfin back down for his bigger cousin. Would also like to try out a variety of your products at our shallower rigs just off the shelf for snapper and grouper. Thanks

Hey Sid, I spool my reels to the top. For the tunas up there I would consider using a large class SPJ reel and Pack it with a min of 450-500yrds of 40# braid. Fill it to the top so you maintain as much retrieval as possible.
