Slow TV: Making a Tutu | English National Ballet

Watch Federica Romano, Costumier at English National Ballet, make a 10-layer pancake tutu base. Filmed over the course of 3 days, the 40-min Slow TV film shows all the intricate work that goes into making a tutu.

0:00 Day 1 involves cutting the layers of net, shaping them and making the pattern for the pant and basque (Francesca usually has blocks ready for different sizes and she adapts them to each dancer). This is followed by placing the pattern on the fabric, pining it, tracing it on both sides, cutting it, sewing all the pieces together and ironing the seams.
11:39 Day 2 begins with preparing the pant, and then pleating all 10 tutu layers by hand, and attaching them to the pant one by one following the lines previously drawn on the fabric.
24:56 Day 3 involves attaching the basque to the pant, then closing the pant and sewing together the edges of the tutu layers. Then, there is sewing hooks and bars for the waistband and adding the metal loop to give more structure to the tutu. Finally, adding the elastics to the pant and stitching together the layers of the tutu.

A skill of the highest order. The seamstress looks like a ballerina. My mom made many tutus for me - as an adult- now I appreciate all the work that went into making them. 💖🌹

Fascinating and mesmerizing! That is so much tedious work, but it showcases the skill of the creator. I learned to sew many years ago, so I understood most of what was happening.

This is my dream profession. I've been learning to sew for the past couple of years with the ultimate goal of learning how to create professional ballet costumes. I still have such a long way to go in developing the skills and knowledge, but I'm loving every step. I just sewed my first ballet leotard and wore it to class and was so proud! Videos like this are so fascinating and encouraging. Other young people have chosen this unique pathway, so I can too. I would give an arm and a leg to do an apprenticeship with a costume maker in a ballet company. Hopefully, one day, I can be good enough to do that and brave enough to make the leap. Thank you for this amazing video!

Hi! I learned how to make a tutu just watching videos like this. There's practically no one who teaches how to make it here in my country. It's a pity. I have so many questions! May you answer some of them? Like which is the length of the fabric in each layer before pleated? That fabric is also almost impossible to get over here... I'm 44 years old I've been making tutus for the last ten years and I love it so much! Thank you for this video, it's amazing ❣️

Was the blue paper transfer paper? I just have no idea what that was for. Boning the tutu looked really frustrating! Also, are the seams french seams or mantua maker's seams? Really interesting.

Hello! Yes the blue paper is a tracing paper which Federica uses to transfer the pattern on the fabric. She mostly uses a plain seam when making a tutu. :)

I would have also loved to hear about the lady's professional path: sewing tutus is quite an unusual profession: is she a former ballerina herself for instance? How does she intereract with the dancers? With the choreographers? Etc.

Yes. That’s what this series is about. Same with the one in pointe shoes.
