Slugging tiktok
Slugging, theres a reason why the hashtag slugging has over 290 million views on tiktok. Everyone is looking for that baby smooth skin. And its a skincare trend that can be tricky to navigate, because you often have people telling you how to do it, but forgetting about all that comes with and things you need to know on how to slug properly and what to watch for.
Is slugging safe and what is slugging skincare
Now slugging was made popular by korean skincare, because they are just years ahead of us when it comes to healthy, glowing skin. The word, “slugging” comes from the idea that after you coat your skin in Vaseline for example, your face ends up looking shiny and slimy.
Slugging products
Slugging is most effective when combined with humectants, which are agents that help us retain moisture, such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin or urea.
Face slugging benefits
Well a good reason is because your essentially factory resetting your skin Starting from your skin barrier and working its way down so it can truly get the moisture it needs. Slugging can help repair the damage by creating a moist environment that allows your barrier to slowly heal and rebuild itself, and when you wake up in the morning, youll find yourself having that glow everyone talks about. Essentially what your doing is, locking in hydration and really forcing the moisture back into the cells and sealing that door shut.
Slugging dermatologist steps
Step one: Cleanse your face. Cant stress that enough. It’s important to thoroughly cleanse your skin because Petrolatum is a sealant, so you want to be sure you’re not trapping any leftover makeup, dirt, or other impurities.
Step two: Pile on the hydrating products, such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin.
Step three: Add a nightly moisturizer, like a lotion, oil or cream. One that also has dimethicone which will help give you that silky glass skin texture that youre probably wondering how people get.
Step four: Load on your occlusive, or the petroleum jelly: Vaseline for slugging, Cerave for slugging, Aquaphor for slugging are some of the most popular ones, but I would stick to vaseline as its the cheapest and its the most easily found and does the job.
Slugging vaseline
Applying a thin layer of the vaseline is just fine, and you dont need to go overboard, like all the tiktok videos, as more vaseline wont give your more results. So a little definitely goes a long way.
Step five: Its all about waiting here. Wait a few minutes before getting into bed. And make sure to have a towel over your pillow, because it can get messy.
Step six: When you wake up, just wash your face thoroughly with a gentle cleanser, that you used in step 1 and proceed with your normal morning skincare routine.
Is slugging good for your skin and for face slugging
-Do slugging if you have dry, irritated, or eczema-prone skin. Slugging prevents TEWL, or (trans epidermal water loss) so the skin stays hydrated and protected, especially in those dry winter months.
-Do make sure to have your hair up during sleep as it will get in your hair.
Should I slug my face?
You dont want to slug if you have acne prone skin, or if you have super oily and even combination skin. Vaseline is non comedogenic, but it can trap oils or other comedogenic ingredients in the skin and could potentially contribute to breakouts. So if you have normal or dry skin, youre in the clear.
Slugging retinol
Don't use retinol products or acids while slugging, especially true for differin, do not use that underneath the vaseline, it will lock it in even more, and make the purge worse.
Slugging with acne
Don't slug over an active breakout or existing acne. You definitely don't want to lock in the bacteria and oil coming from your pimples

PRO TIP. I find using a Towel on my pillow makes it Very Hot and uncomfortable & I don't like the lint sticking to my face in the morning. I simply put a Clean T-shirt over my pillow case & change them out and wash them as needed. Everybody has lots of t-shirts they don't wear anymore and its easier to wash them. You're welcome!😉

I started slugging a month ago, and yesterday, for the first time in years, went out with just a small amount of loose powder brushed lightly on my face. It might be the first time I haven't used foundation. Caught myself in a window and realized I looked BETTER without foundation. My skin just looked softer and more natural.

Don’t forget to slug your arms and legs, especially in the winter. After showering, I load up on the body moisturizer and then use Aquaphor or Eucerin Dry Skin Cream. Give it a few minutes before putting on PJs. It really helps keep the eczema at bay.

Slugging is not new from TicToc. Marilyn Monroe and Doris Day did the same thing Doris "Slugged" her entire body. People have been slugging since petroleum jelly was invented. The addition of hyaluronic(sic) acid may new. The old school method was to use lemon juice.

Its not just Korea & its a 'secret' thats been around since the golden days of Hollywood, Marilyn Monroe used to layer her face, body with vasaline & then her makeup &powder over the top to achieve that iconic glow. I first heard of the benefits when modelling in the late 70s early80s.. Also around the same time,I was at at a lunch party where Joan Collins & others were extolling the benefits of vasaline, especially around the eyes at night. I've been using it every night over ,either E45 or Cetraben - 2 moisturisers, that are actually prescribable by doctors in UK - since then, even just vasaline; applied just before i turn off the light,if too lazy -,it seems to have a beneficial effect on eyebrows & lashes, too - & unlike watching the effects of short term use by people in their 20s& 30s, i have to say at 60 i can definitely vouch for the long term effects.

But to summarize, one can look for brightening ingredients, such as alpha arbutin and niacinamide which can be found on their own or in moisturizers, serums, or masks. A vitamin C serum in the morning has worked for many as well. Best of success to you! 😊

I use only a pea-sized amount warmed slightly & applied over my face (including eyelids) with clean fingertips. I see the doctor suggested Shea butter to someone as an alternative to Vaseline (elsewhere in the comments) but I had already been advised using something with Aquaphor is very beneficial so that is I am already using. When you say don't slug while using a retinol, do you mean on the nights you actually apply your retinol? Or don't use it at all if you use a retinol in your routine, even on your off nights? Is slugging necessary or worth doing if you have normal skin? Not dry/not oily - just normal?

Thanks so much I'm 41 but so far my skin is fine but I feel under my eyes and my jaw line get dry I tend to use less moisturizer in the summer because I hate the sweaty feeling So I think slugging one or two times a week might help on days I opt out of moisturizing if I go out on a summer day

@@judivandeveer207 You’re one of the rare cases. It’s easier for me to control dry skin rather than oily. I prefer more dry. I do not miss the days of worrying when I hug someone if I’m going to get all oily on them. Only during the winter do I have drier skin but I know how to control it.

Yep, menopausal lady here and my forehead is vastly drier than as a teen. It will reduce the appearance of lines because it hydrates but will not take them away, although there may be evidence that since skin still repairs, you might see some permanent improvement.

I have very dry skin and live in the desert. My skin gets dried out from SPF physical and makeup. Is there a way I can slug underneath the SPF or make up to keep my skin from looking like the desert?
@TheBaumcm
@TheBaumcm 5 ай бұрын
I know that dry, desert heat. Slugging is mostly meant for night but I’d think you could use more hydrating products during the day and use the SPF to lock it in. There are some great sunscreens, both mineral and chemical, that are very hydrating. Look for the same in your makeup.

This is no different from women in the 50s and 60s who put cold cream on their face before bed. It’s a barrier cream, that holds in moisture.

Tks for extra tips; I happen to use all the products you mention but not the same way, so tku for that. I only began slugging last week.I turned 69 this summer and people regularly comment on my "nice skin," (likely bcs I stay out of the sun and don't wear globs of makeup, mostly only cream blush, eyebrows and lip balm). My forehead and cheek wrinkles are problem areas. After less than a week using vaseline, (always sleep on my back w/my hair up), forehead wrinkles diminished, cheek lines look, well, better. Slugging really works. However, one thing you didn't mention is how often to slug. I haven't done it for the past three days, and wrinkles are still gone and skin still feels so soft. Xtra tip: Used it on dry elbows and surrounding skin, knees and legs. Really softened those areas.

Thanks for the question. It may be better to avoid it as it can occur more commonly with heavy products, especially around the eyelid or the eye area. A way to work around this if you must go with this approach is to avoid the slugging technique on the entire face.

It doesn’t actually really feel any worse than getting a little sweaty, especially if you spread a very thin layer of Vaseline. You can also dab some of it off as it liquefies if it feels to be too much.

Look up humectants. All of them draw moisture, honey is an example. ETA: Glycerin (not glycerine) may actually be even better and is cheaper.
