Well, heck, I’ve been slugging all this time and I didn’t even know it was a “thing”! I started several months ago because at 68, the skin on my face (and neck) is much drier than it used to be. I started nightly use of Aquaphor ointment for its healing properties and then began using Ponds dry skin cream underneath it as a humectant. The Ponds product feels great on my skin, so I figured I’d “seal it in” with a layer of Aquaphor. So I guess I stumbled onto something right just by intuition. That happens sometimes. 😂 Thanks, docs, for the validation!

@MicheleEngel
@MicheleEngel 8 ай бұрын
@@ashlynm997 My goal was never to achieve positive changes in my skin. My goal has been to keep my skin as hydrated and moisturized as possible from the outside. I'm 69 years old. I look about ten years younger than that, but that has more to do with genetics than anything else. Do I have fewer wrinkles than I otherwise would? There's no way to assess that. I've simply tried to look my best at any age, and I think I've succeeded. For all I know, this skin care regimen has had little to no effect. But it makes my skin feel good and well cared for. That's enough for me.

So many people think things like Vaseline and oils will moisturize your skin if you just put it right on dry skin (same with lip balm!) I've been telling people for years that you need to hydrate first and seal it in. I didn't know it was a beauty secret, I think it should be a basic concept we sorta all just know about. Anyone who asks how I'm 41 with no wrinkles has learned about slugging and sealing moisture in, I just didn't have a funny name for it 😂

Petrolatum is used in sulphur based products for scabies. The pharmacists said it’s used to keep the mites immobile. Demodex mites are a contributor to skin issues. I think they cause pretty much ALL skin issues. So petrolatum will immobilize them when they are the busiest and reproducing at night. This is most likely the biggest contributor to improving skin conditions.

Think a lot of us were slugging for decades before it had a name. As a person with dermatitis, I’ve used Vaseline to seal in moisture for years. Pediatricians used to tell moms to use a medicated cream on baby’s butt for diaper rash, then a thin coating of Vaseline to keep the cream from rubbing off on the diaper. When the rash was gone, we’d seal baby’s butt with Vaseline at nighttime to prevent diaper rash from coming back. It worked.

Having eczema, I've always used ointments over moisturizers (vaseline when younger, aquaphor through my teens to now). I lived in WA growing up, and winter would just wreck my skin. This was a MUST for me throughout the year. Now that I live in NC, the humidity has actually benefited my skin so much, and I don't find the need to do this much anymore unless the weather is colder or on a windy day.

@@anavazquez6218 Your skin is likely oily because it’s trying to compensate for all of the harsh drying products you use. If you moisturize your oily skin, your skin will stop producing so much oil because it’s getting the moisture it needs from your products. Serum, cream, and mask, at night on my face. My favorite night routine when I have the budget and time. I had the feeling it work. But around the eye area, the mask I used was getting dry during the night. I woke up several time in the morning with my skin glued/folded. Lady, this is NOT going to help your allergies. For the love of god, _don't put dinosaur juice on your skin._ It's toxic. USE SILICONE SCAR GEL. Unless they are instant and VERY severe allergies (ie you must use an epipen to recover), most allergies are caused _by longterm magnesium deficiency,_ which completely dysregulates your innate immune system

I wanted to chime in as a former allergy sufferer. I had allergies from college on and had to take a Zyrtec everyday of my life. I would get sinus infections yada yada … then I wanted to heal my gut and so in that process I eliminated dairy … well EVERY allergy went away!! My severe acne cleared up and I lost 70lbs in the process. It’s been almost 4 years and still NO ALLERGIES!! Occasionally as the season changes and there is a blustery day that carries tons of pollen etc. I will sneeze a few times and then my body just handles it and I never have to take anything and I’m totally normal. In healing my gut, I realized that allergies are a way of our body telling us that it is stressed and inflamed. What’s so amazing is that when we cleaned dairy out as a family, my 4 kids stopped having allergies, sleep issues, acne…. Amazing results!

Thanks to you two, I began using CeraVe Healing Ointment on my lips which were peeling non stop, year round even with the use of RX steroid ointment. After watching one of your videos I began to suspect that I was really having a reaction to Castor Seed Oil, so I checked and yep it was in virtually every lip care and lip color I owned. So I went cold turkey and switched to the CeraVe Healing Ointment and within 48 hours the peeling completely stopped. I now make sure I use castor free lip products and I have not had a peeling problem since. I also love it for my cuticles which get really ragged in the winter and use it around my nose when it gets irritated from a cold. It comes in small travel size tubes too, so now I always have it in my purse. Never thought of slugging with it, though I'll try it now. Your advice is always so instructive and helpful.

Hey, so I have the same issue and never thought about castor seed oil. Did you ever use accutane? Do you ever use a warm washcloth to slough off the dead skin from lips? If so, do you see if that makes a difference? I’m definitely going to try the cerave healing ointment on my lips and see what happens. I have been struggling with major skin peeling for years and years :(
@lisab.3091
@lisab.3091 2 жыл бұрын
@@Ave1821 I have never used accutane. Apparently castor seed oil is a pretty reactive ingredient and you can develop a sensitivity to it at any point in your life. I tried a warm washcloth, even purchased a nifty little silicone exfoliating brush that has fine nubs on one side and larger ones on the other to help with sloughing (available on Amazon). I was at my wit's end. Unbeknownst to me, every product that I was using to soothe my lips was secretly aggravating them because they ALL contained castor seed oil (beware of lanolin too). Within 48 hours of switching to just the Healing Ointment my lips had cleared up. It's been 9 months since and I have no issues - even got through winter without peeling. About a month ago I began applying a castor free lip color over the Healing Ointment and had zero reaction. Yay! Good luck with your journey to healthy lips 👄

As I’ve tried to detox my diet and everything I put on my skin, I’ve switched to 100% Shea butter as my “slugging” method. It’s amazing and noncomedogenic and promotes collagen and healing as well. As a 52 yr old… I get people stopping me all the time to ask what I use on my skin. I make my own vit C serum, hyaluronic acid serum, and use organic rose water as a toner and then use generous amounts of Shea butter and that’s it! I can eat all these, they’re so pure! The older I get, the more uncomplicated my skin care has gotten and the healthier my skin is🥰❤️.

Did an elimination diet process per this book and my acne cleared, allergies - skin and seasonal etc. disappeared, and I began quickly shedding 70 lbs! I’ve started slugging with Vaseline at night 2-3x a week and it has helped me repair my skin barrier after a massive flare up of dermatitis earlier this year. That said, I do love CeraVe’s Healing Ointment, but I mainly use that on my lips and cuticles. I’m learning that the fewer ingredients a product has, the better my skin will tolerate it. My nighttime routine is a double cleanse (Bioderma & Vanicream cleanser), a custom Rx that combines a low dose of Tretinoin and pharmaceutical grade aloe, and then a super basic moisturizer (Aveeno Oat Gel Moisturizer or VaniCream), and Vaseline. Two nights a week I will switch my retinol out for the Paula’s Choice BHA 2% because I’m prone to congestion on my nose. In the morning I skip the actives and focus on being moisturized and doused with SPF.

@@abarbaradorsey3713 tallow is kind of petroleum jelly but it came from the sebum of an animal, which is the same as the fossil fuel that we knew today.

I reverse slug my lips with CeraVe healing ointment before I go through my oral care process (antiseptic mouthwash in a water flosser, teeth brushing, and fluoride rinse), which I’ve found to be great to minimize lip barrier damage. I also use the same ointment to slug, and I LOVE to put it over the CosRx snail mucin line

If you have a reaction to your toothpaste causing cracking in the corners or dried lips, check to see if it contains SLS. This ingredient is used by most toothpaste manufacturers to make the paste foam more in your mouth. It is a known irritant and is used in other soaps and shampoos. I switched to Sensodyne, which does not contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) , and the problem went away.

I only discovered this lately and more people should know about it, ingredient’s in toothpastes and mouth wash could cause alot of irritation to many people leaving them with dry lips and hyperpigmentation and they think it’s because they don’t drink enough water or its the weather

Thank you so much for this video, it was super helpful, as always! ❤️ In the future, I would love to see one about atopic dermatitis/atopic skin in general. Among many skin problems throughout my life, I have been REALLY struggling with it when I was a kid. Then it disappeared in my teenage years, as it typically does. I'm now 22 and I noticed it is starting to come back, especially when I am stressed or just not feeling my best mentally. I would really appreciate some Doctorly tips (what products do you recommend etc.) and just general info about it and how to best take care of atopic skin. Keep up the great work! 👏🏻🙌🏻

I also have atopic dermatitis and now developed nummular eczema - mineral oil underneath Vaseline has been wonderful for me. I use mineral oil over my whole body and layer Vaseline on my flare up spots right after a shower to prevent future flare ups. Real world NP has a great video about treatments for atopic dermatitis!

Wow that's exactly what i did last night and i didn't even know this was a thing. I used the Cerave moisture cream, then finished with a thin top layer of Eucirin Aquaphor healing ointment over top. The results this morning were amazing. Yes, i did start off with a retinol serum first - honestly i didn't know about any of this including potential burning - but luckily, i was totally fine. Anyway, did this for the first time last night as a personal experiment... and here you are this morning on my recommends, telling me this is a real thing, and a damn good one!
