This movie was so intense! While I know this was not a Bollywood movie as it was a British movie filmed in Mumbai, I still thought that a lot of the filming techniques made for a good starting point into Indian cinema! The movie itself was really well shot and the ending sequences had me on the edge of my seat. If you have any other Indian movies that you'd like for me to check out let me know!! Dr. Ian Malcolm Award Fact: The pile of excreta that the young Jamal (Ayush Mahesh Khedekar) jumps into was made from a combination of peanut butter and chocolate. MPAA Hacks Fact: The film was originally intended to receive a PG-13 rating. In the end, it received an R rating because of its intense tone. With no time or money for appeals, the film was released with its given rating. Academy Win Fact: This is the first foreign film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture since The Last Emperor (1987), which I personally highly recommend, in 1988. Neither film was produced or supported by a major American film studio.

The director is (very white british guy) Danny Boyle who won Best Director for this. He is known for his kinetic style, and each film he does is a different genre: 28 Days Later (horror) Millions (kidflick) Trainspotting (drugs) Sunshine (scifi) this (Bollywood tribue) 127 Hours (survival). When London had the Olympics, they picked him to direct the opening ceremony.

Was in a movie discussion group back in the day called "Oscars 2009: The Coronation of Slumdog Millionaire." because it was such a given that it would win Best Picture

Jai Ho (the song) was composed by Grammy winning indian composer AR Rahman

Look for the Academy Awrds ceremony from that year, all the little kids were there in little tuxes & dresses.

It is not a Bollywood movie. It’s a Hollywood movie . I love this movie.

Highly recommend The Lunchbox (2013) if you want more Indian fare, a beautiful, gentle and heartwarming film with a magical performance from Irfan Khan (the policeman in Slumdog).

Ollie, you would also appreciate "Lion" with Dev Patel if you haven't seen it already. It's partly set in India and has a few similarities to this one.

This movie was very intense. We randomly got the dvd in the mail, not sure why. We decided to give it a watch, I was a teen, and it really messed with me (opened my eyes). It made me realize how bad life can truly be and that I had it good compared to others.

If you want to watch bollywood movies I would recommend you start with "SHERSHAAH" and "GANGUBAI KATHIAWADI". They are pretty recent and absolutely amazing. Bollywood (hindi cinema) has absolute gems

Another of my all-time favs that you've reacted to. As far as Indian/Bollywood movies, I'd recommend Om Shanti Om and Bahubali 1+2.

If you want to watch an actual Bollywood movie, angal Pandey is FANTASTIC! I learned a lot about that period of Indian history through the movie. It's based on a true story about a really interesting concept that I never even thought was a thing, so would never have thought about being so significant! Plus, it's got incredible acting, stunning lighting and camera work, gorgeous costume designs, brilliant story-writing, and some absolute BANGERS that I still listen to from time to time. It's... it's great.

India has different film industries for the different indian languages spoken etc.. I would suggest sticking to only bollywood (hindi language) films as it is the best and most prominent industry in the country
