Just stumbling upon this now in 2024. Sly was ahead of his time!! A musical genius, sensitive soul, a bit shy and humble. His comments are very honest and true. He did seem to be very mature for his age. Glad he’s still around and wish him the best!!! ❤❤

Yeah he was! My God I've loved him since I was about 12 or 13, way back in 1968 or 69. I still can't sit still when I hear his music. Dick Cavett was one of my favorite Taino show hosts. He interviewed so many interesting people. Sly also brings the funk lol, which really added a special feeling to his music.

Sly was such a musical genius. He was into ALL music and saw no color or gender. He wanted the best in his band. It didn't matter except they had to have the talent he was looking for. Sly was breaking boundaries and was so far ahead of his time.

So true--when I saw him and the Family Stone kick into "Sing a Simple Song" in the Summer of Soul movie it all came back, the power the band had jumped right through the screen! So badass, so funky and real. They always make me smile. No color, no gender just mixed harmony and soul! Yes, he was so far ahead of his time.

So much phenomenal music in just five years 1968-73. Truly revolutionary musical innovations. It doesn't get more inspirational than "Stand!" or "Everybody is a Star" and nobody made despair as darkly beautiful (and funny) as "There's A Riot Goin' On." When you consider that "I Want You Back" by the Jackson Five would never have been possible without Sly, you can see how far his influence reaches.

Well yeah. He's why I love him and hate him at the same time. Musical genius but destroyed the band and himself in the early 70's. 1971's "There's a Riot Going On" was Epic, but he was so fuqd up on drugs that he never regained genuine prominace, But 1967-1971, he was the baddest dude on the planet. George Clinton, EWF, Rick James, Prince all learned from Sly Stone. EVERYONE

One could say it was his schtick. He was very popular at the time because his shows felt like he was simply having a private conversation with whomever he was interviewing. Dick Cavett has said many times that he was often very nervous when meeting some of these huge celebrities and that was amplified by the fact that he would often only write down a half a dozen poignant questions, and then let the chips fall where they did. For the most part, these are unscripted, very candid interviews. Check out the John Lennon interview for instance.

I love this interview between Cavett and Sly. The wit and tension of the interaction between the two makes for a riveting dialogue. I think Cavett was fine here, but I think he was a bit thrown off by Sly, who kept one step ahead of Dick throughout, and controls their discussion. Ex: Dick asks Sly, 'Do you sit down and write it (music)?', to which Sly replies 'Sometimes I stand up', which gets a roar from the crowd. Dick, then says, 'You know that Hemmingway wrote on top of the icebox', to which Sly quickly responds 'I'm not trying to match wits'. Sly then goes on to talk about how he writes in front of the mirror. Bam.

Agreed! Sly really liked Dick, he says so multiple times and you can tell it's genuine. But in the beginning of the interview the audience underestimates Sly and his sophistication, intellect, and the seriousness of his work. He sets them straight just by being himself :)

The “smug host” is the well-known Dick Cavett - still going strong as of this date. He was open-minded enough to have him on the program- not a given back then. It’s audience is live and not canned like most of today’s television. And the audience is arguably sharper than today’s late night fare.

Sly is the only person in the room who is truly in tune with himself. High no doubt, but listen to the giggling audience and Cavetts dumb questioning.

Sly is a good dude.... Cavet kinda doesn't know where to go with the conversation, but Sly 's just chillin. Serms lika a very articulate man. My best to him.

I picked up Cavett in my car one night in New York with a couple of friends and took him up to midtown while talking with him about some of his guests. He was nice and pleasant but looking back at some of these interviews, his questions seem more near insulting while trying to be cute than intriguing or trenchant.

Cavett didn't know how to approach Sly in this interview. Sly was wild and already under the spell of hard drugs.
