There seemed to be a certain humility, even shyness with his presence that evening. Definitely not the arrogance of a star. I don't know the backstory. Was he unwilling to go out on stage? Was he unselfishly making sure the rest of the band got their due respect?

@@zackzallie8735 I hear you Zack...but my thing is the James Brown and the JB's were always tight and controlled. The James Brown show was controlled fury. Sly and the family always seemed to meander onstage and play some nameless meaningless groove/idea they were phucking around with and THEN start their show. JB and his crew hit the stage like lions and there wasn't all of this between song dead air or tuning up like with Sly. That is my point of reference. During that 20 year disappearance period I met Sly on three separate occasions - out of the proverbial blue - jjst ran into him and he was always as nice and a s gracious as could possibly be. I just get upset with him because he shit all over his career and legacy. I can understand where JB was too black, strong and proud for white folks...but Sly was everything he could have been for all of us and he should be mentioned right up there with all of the top White cats - Jagger, Bowie, Morrison, The Beatles - but instead he allowed himself to become a no show joke/punchline and a train wreck. Breaks my heart. Please talking music with you brother man.

I luv'd these guys so much that when they pulled a Bob Dylan (no show) at Kiel in St. Louis back in '70-'71, I just shrugged my shoulders and thought 'too bad' Thanks for posting

This band is hugely responsible for the evolution of Hip Hop especially during the Golden Era from ‘86 to ‘94. Dr Dre, Digital Underground, KRS ONE to name just a few who used their samples and Janet Jackson used Thank You (Falletinme Be Mice Elf Agin) in Rhythm Nation

Back in the day my so called "boyfriend" who was also in a band came by to pick something up on a Saturday morning. I was still up stairs. In pajamas, rollers in hair, no make up. He told me Freddy Stone was downstairs. As a fan I geeked out. I couldn't let a member of Sly and the Family Stone see me like that! I had my boyfriend make him go sit in the car. Lol!

DAMN!@.. Until it was STATED I didn't REALIZE that ALL of the ORIGINAL Members at THAT time were still around... WHEN you see who played at Woodstock(1969) you gotta realize that is NO small task... 1ST heard of S&FS via Stand... The BOMB of a Tune for me was ALWAYS "Sex Machine" a REAL Mix of Funk N Chunk 4 sure!@..

Are you kidding! Right now in 2021 they are still all alive except for Cynthia Robinson. She died from cancer in 2015. This induction was in 1993. RIP Cynthia.
