Sly was a different kind of dude. He just loved his music and wanted everyone to share his joy. The drugs got the best of him, but my God what a talent.

The most entertaining rock band of our era. With all of the a-list bands on stage at Woodstock not one was more entertaining or energetic than S&FS.

I grew up with Sly and that era was the best. I am 66 yrs. young and still get up and dance to his music . One of the best bands ever. They had so much fun and he was a perfectionist. Sly & the family Stone's music will never die.

Let’s face it: On “Thank You” Sly is more brilliant on that guitar than any “classic rock” or heavy metal guitarist I ever heard. My apologies to Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton and their fans, but let’s face it: this is brilliance.

The Music, the Soul, the Funk is color blind. This white dude was HEAVILY influenced by this man and his group. Larry frigging Graham!! Damn! Sly gave us music that will endure forever. He gave us a part of his Soul. I LOVE Sly and the Family Stone. This music touches me deep inside and gives me a smile. Love you always.

Love your post-all of it is so true! Another white dude here-we know what Sly was all about--it's no matter what skin you're in. I love Sly's music and his message so much, it will indeed live forever. Totally agree about him giving us a part of his soul because the power of his songs never fail to raise my spirits, and give me a smile too! As the years go by I seem to gain even more appreciation of Sly's genius, it's hard not to be in awe. Giving the world that gift. All we have to do is listen--it's total magic!

He kinda played a little of everything, even drums. But Sly was a musical producer. A true recording producer. That was his forte. He played drums on Funk Get Stronger - Funkadelic. Check it out. Oh and Poet on the Riot Album.

By this time all their performances were just lacking. Something just wasn't there.The singing was out of sync for one thing . By this time Sly creativity was waining Tho who was going to tell him?

This isn't the CLASSIC Band. That band never for example performed live THANK YOU. CLASSIC Band was ALL TIME best LIVE BAND in history of American popular music.

He was put into that box that performers get stuck in when they have super hits that stand out in the show producers eyes and ears that will be popular. If you watch a lot of Midnight Special, most every band plays their hits for the best ratings. Sly still came out with some great music, but drugs really "stonewalled" him. It's sad to see the later interviews of him living out of a trailer while a 5 million dollar law suit is pending. I wish his "young self" could have seen where his "old self" ended up. Maybe he would've done things differently. I'd like to think so.
