Today we deep dive into Hybrid Reverb. This is one of my favorite new features of Ableton Live 11 and so I wanted to explore, exploit and educate as per usual. Enjoy!

Every time you're like "hey, this might be a cool idea" and then it turns out extremely cool and you clearly cannot contain the smile. Looks like so much fun!

Dude, I don't know how you figure all of these crazy tricks out. Absolutely insane. The more I watch your stuff, the more I think of Ableton as its own instrument. A month ago, I couldn't think of too many great uses for resampling other than saving some processing power or condensing tracks. Today, watching your video I immediately thought "gotta resample that drum drone sound" right as you said it. It's been incredibly helpful to watch your tutorials. Thanks dude. Also I love that "meow" IR. hahaha. Need to set up my cat crying on my Helix too and see what happens.

Used it slightly but not like this, now I am super inspired. You know a tutorial is good when it makes you laugh out loud with excitement. I would love to see more dnb from you. That bass was awesome.

It's crazy how all these plugins sucks you in with flashy guis and whatnot. Right there, from the getgo, in Ableton you got these monsters that can do wonders. Thank you for showcasing a stockplug so well!

Putting reverse samples is a great trick in the hybrid reverb. Reversed reverb or delay tails. Reversed trash+ott artifacts etc.

Wow thanks for showing so many applications of Hybrid Reverb. I've definitely been sleeping on this plugin. I'd love to see more videos about some of the newer effect additions in Ableton and ways to get creative with them!

Cool video. I stopped halfway through to get some IRs of the rooms of my dojo with my small recorder. It's not as perfect as the frequency sweep, but a simple dirac gives satisfying results too. I also finally learned how to deal with the L+R IRs I found on internet thanks to your videos (that was easy...)

Thank you. I've been using the hybrid reverb just in default lol sounds great still...That's also the first time I've seen the envelope follower before, what a great little trick. I love Ableton, anything is possible!

Damn, FL needs this. We obviously have convolution and algorithmic reverb, but I have not seen any options to swap out the algorithm. If we wanted to do even half the stuff you did in this video, we'd have to rig up an entire patcher to do so :c Still though, messing with convolution reverb is SO damn fun. You can easily lose hours just fiddling with different sounds and see how they react :D

I watched the entire tutorial for waiting for the moment for when you would turn a freeze a juicy minor 9th chord to put into the hybrid reverb and was a bit disappointed it didn't happen

... and BTW, if U don't know, the best plugin and work about "creativ IR' is made (IMHO) by AudioEase with Spearkerphone. Terrific results with can be made with it ; we use it a lot in film sound-design etc. www.audioease.com/speakerphone/index.php

Interestingly, sending impulse responses through hardware works great for capturing the sound of plates and spring reverb, but for many digital reverb units won't accurately reproduce the same sound because it can't capture the modulation those units use.
@tothefinlandstation
@tothefinlandstation 2 жыл бұрын
also worth noting, when you captured the impulse response of your room, it is more accurate to say you captured the impulse response of the entire chain: your speakers and microphones, positioned relative to each other and the room, plus the sound of your audio interface, and any of the rest of the signal chain.

17:35 I didn't really understand how that would work with a hardware reverb? But whatever, I dont even have a hardware reverb. great video as always! thanks
@Slynk
@Slynk 3 жыл бұрын
You'd skip the part where you play the testing tone out of your speakers and instead send the test tone through your hardware reverb and then record the result. This would give you an IR of the reverb.

Years ago, Ableton sounds and effects were bleak. Then I got Valhalla reverb and it had so much sparkle. Does Ableton's new reverb sound good now? Can I throw out my Valhalla? Or is Ableton Reverb just an interesting weird effect?

@@Slynk Yeah, I watched it. I can't assess in one video aimed at extreme sound creation. There's a big difference between putting a reverb over a pop music track to make it sparkle sweetly vs TwitchHopAcidGlitchTrapTron music mangling.

Tbh, I'm not convinced. This just looks like way too much work for creating niche sounds you won't be using most of the time anyway. If anything, it just adds to the bloat of Ableton Live, of which its performance seems to have taken a deep dive since version 11.
@Slynk
@Slynk 3 жыл бұрын
It's not "too much work" if you're enjoying yourself. And if you're not enjoying yourself, then what's the point? Find a new hobby. Personally, I love experimenting with audio and pushing Ableton devices to the limit to see what happens. Maybe I make a cool sound, maybe I don't. The end result is irrelevant because I enjoyed the process.
@Drrolfski

@@Slynk These are wise words, my friend. But just let me push it this way: I have found your tutorials on creating cool rhythms by dividing up bars a whole lot more useful and inspiring. For sure, part of that is personal preference but that doesn't mean there isn't room for you to grow.
