Lichtenstein actually used to be WAY bigger, and until....2009 iirc, they were still demanding the return of lands from Austria. In the end, Austria got more support, and had the EU on side, so the Lichtensteiner side settled. Austria kept the lands, BUT return half a dozen Royal Palaces to the Crown of Lichtenstein, they are today essentially micro enclaves of the country wholly within Austria.

Your missing Canada's final expansion in 1949 when we were given Newfoundland. Formerly it was it's own dominion but went bankrupt in the interwar period, got turning back into a colony, and was then handed over after ww2.
@paranoidrodent
@paranoidrodent 4 жыл бұрын
It wasn't simply handed over. The residents of Newfoundland voted to join Canada, post-war Britain was happy to let them go and Canada was happy to have them. Technically it was a vote between three options (stay a colony, join Canada, independence as a dominion again). Independence got a plurality on the first vote but in the run off between the top two choices, joining Canada won a slim majority - 52.3%.

About Canada. It existed prior to the making of the federation in 1867. From 1534 to 1763, Canada was the name of a region of New-France, consisting of the Saint-Lawrence and Great Lakes Valley (parts of modern day Québec and Ontario). After the British conquest and the treaty of Paris in 1763, Canada was known under the name of Province of Quebec until 1791, then divided in two parts: Upper Canada (south of modern day Ontario) and Lower Canada (Saint-Lawrence valley). Then in 1840, the two regions got united again under the name of Province of Canada until 1867. You also forgot that Newfoundland joined the federation in 1949 and used to be a former British dominion as well.

They are a relic of a time when the Europe was riddled with small fiefdoms, ducats, principates and such. A good example is Spain: It was several nations before its unification, and still today you can see the difference in the language of Castillian ( the language of Lion and Castille, which is now known as spanish) and Catalan (The language of Catalonia), Another good example is Italy, with it's several italian languages all hailing back from the times of their Maritime Republics

I think Argentina could be an addition in a second part of this video, Argentina (like the US) had to fight and conquer its territory as it was not given all to a single institution by Spain, as most of Brazil's territory did from Portugal. But Kingdom of Sardinia fought the austrians in 1848-49 and in 1859, they sent troops to the Crimean War to eneter the game of great powers and to look for an alliance with France, UK or Prussia. They organized the referendums in Tuscany, Parma, Lucca and Modena and they invaded the Papal State in 1860. The prime minister of Sardinia, Camillo Benso, count of Cavour; was the head of unification, not Garibaldi. I repeat, Garibaldi was a very importnat figure, in Italy we love him, but also the Kingdom of Sardinia had a main role

For Canada, you did leave out the acquisition of Newfoundland and Labrador from the British in 1949, thus joining the Confederation that same year. Apart from that, the most recent change was the creation of the territory of Nunavut, having been split off from the Northwest Territories in 1999. In recent years, there had been talks between the Canadian government and the Turks and Caicos islands in the Caribbean. They've twice stated their desire to become a part of Canada, but nothing's been done about it, due to the logistical and constitutional issues such an inclusion would bring. Mainly the issue of a vastly different economic structure, as well as whether or not it would be a new province, or merged into an existing one, like Nova Scotia.

Yup, Vermont didn't join the Union right away. They joined in 1791 after a deal was made with NY that Vermont would pay thirty thousand dollars to be distributed to every New Yorker that claimed land in Vermont under NY land patents. And that both states agreed on the boundary between them.

@Arthur __ We can pretty much do that with English. English is being taught in many countries as second language. IIRC it's part of school curricullum (i.e. you must have at least a basic proficiency of English to graduate) in China, Japan, The Netherlands, India, Indonesia, and the Phillipines. Probably in many other countries as well, tho I'm not sure countries like France, Russia, or Italy, which seems to be very proud of their own language, would teach English to their youngsters.

The beginning was slow. This was basically a tiny fortress in the middle of nowhere which was given to the 3rd or 4th son of the grand Duke of Kiev. Since Kiev went into decline due to the Mongol invasion and trade issues with byzantine the city states were much more independent. Moscows main trick was to get the orthodox metropoliit to reside permanently in Moscow. It increased the income and political Influence. It's influence bacame even bigger when byzantine fell and Moscow became the last holder of orthodoxy. Also Moscow had mostly pretty nice relationships with golden horde. The horde gave out the right to certain dukes to collect tax for them so the moscovites were often in the more favorable position . The rulers of Moscow were simply very smart guys.

Around the 6 to 9 minute time period, maps are shown without any ocean borders and it is difficult to get the context from a green or a red "blob" which is supposed to show something.
