Audiences all over the globe felt the need for speed as "Top Gun: Maverick" soared to the top of the box office. The sequel to the 1986 blockbuster saw the return of Tom Cruise in his original role -- older, maybe a bit wiser, and now flight instructor to a new group of young hotshot pilots itching to cruise into the danger zone. Although the director of the original film, Tony Scott, passed away, "Top Gun: Maverick" works as a tribute to the director and his legacy, all while giving fans old and new an original, gripping story. Part of that tribute comes in the form of callbacks, small details, and Easter eggs to the 1986 film. Did you catch them all? Here are all the small details you might have missed in "Top Gun: Maverick."

I'm interested in the unrecognized hand signals the enemy pilot makes. Thought he held up three fingers twice, then a fist. So; 3, 3, 0? Or 3, 3, the letter A in sign language? Or 3, 3, rock (beats scissors)?

That had a double meaning. He said talk to me dad, but then the voice he heard was Maverick’s. Maverick later says that he tried to be a father to Rooster after Goose died. Then at the end Maverick says “thanks for saving my life”, and Rooster says “it’s what my dad would have done”. That has double meaning, not only remembering Goose. He’s acknowledging that Maverick saved his life and his role as a father figure.

I still can't believe how completely they nailed this. Revisting a 35 year old movie, honoring the first movie and it's cast, respecting the real world events and technological shifts since then and making it feel new, all at the same time.....it seemed impossible, Of course, it helps that Tom Cruise and Jennifer Connelly both found the fountain of youth.
@billwiley7216

Actually Tom Cruise reminded me a lot of Viper in the original movie as far as evaluating his charges and pushing them to the limits of their skills and capabilities. What we had the advantage of is seeing how in some ways Maverick was still a loose cannon but in other ways his maturity and vision concerning being the best of the best had matured so much as compared to his younger days in the original Top Gun. Maverick knowing that for the pilots to go into this mission with a chance THEY had to believe not only they could do it but they could get out to see the sun rise the next day. When Maverick did his rogue mission run in even a shorter time than the pilots would have it was not for him but for the pilots to see it could be done and build their confidence. Maverick probably figured he would be court marshaled for the stunt but he could live with that knowing the pilots would go into the mission believing they had a chance. This was imho the exact reason Iceman used his pull to get Maverick in the instructor role to head up this mission. Ice knew if there was a pilot on this planet that had the skills, the balls and could figure out how to pull this mission off AND give the pilots a shot to return alive it was Maverick and no one else. I saw references to the first movie from the beginning to the end and all were well done, and for any fan of the first movie and its characters this film played the heart strings and honestly I have never seen a Tom Cruise movie where he conveyed the amount of emotion in a role as he did in this movie when it came to memories of Goose and for Rooster Gooses son. And Jennifer Connely was the perfect match to play Mavericks love interest which also tied back into the first film. I think this is the best movie to be made in at least the last decade if not longer! One final thing they did not try to play on the woke angle which was another relief!

It's something not spoken ever but the reason why he (Maverick) hasn't advanced passed O-6 (Captain in the navy) is mainly due to his love of flying. Once you make it to admiral in the navy, you're behind a desk FOREVER aka til you retire. Hence his hesitation to be promoted.
@hannaj4032
@hannaj4032 Жыл бұрын
Great point! He’s still living the dream while they’re pushing pencils. Iceman knew what his value was even if the other top brass had doubts. I did feel like Warlock was rooting for him and gave him some excellent coaching and encouragement when Cyclone seemed to be hoping he’d fail. IMO, Cyclone and Cain were representative of the kind of lifers that should really consider retirement. Pete’s only one promotion away from flag officer ( Admiral). In the end he proves he’s a great leader because unlike Cyclone, he knew his pilots had the talent for mission success where the Admiral’s strategy would have gotten them all killed. Making Hangman the backup gave him a much needed ego check. Finally, he sacrificed himself to save Rooster which was the tipping point in the younger pilot’s evolution. Without a thought, his instincts took over and he went back for his mentor and saved his life! If there is another movie it seems logical that Mav finally accepts a promotion that he’s certainly earned and Rooster and Hangman become the main characters.

Dante, Spot on. I was in the Navy for 6 years in an air unit. I often heard pilots refer to a day of flying as a non-work day. That's a fun day. When the job is no longer fun, they'll quit. Maverick would have been that kind of pilot. Let's also mention that being an O-6 is nothing to sneeze at. Lots of officers retire as O-4 or O-5, and those are considered respectable ranks.

Maverick essentially fills Viper's role in Top Gun: Maverick. In Top Gun, Viper confides in Jester about how to handle Maverick, commenting that he served with his father. Viper proceeds to mentor Maverick the rest of the movie. In the sequel, Maverick is unsure how to handle Rooster and confides in Ice Man for guidance, and mentors Rooster the rest of the movie.

In this iteration of TopGun, when Maverick makes a visit to Iceman, I got instantly reminded of Maverick making a visit to Viper in the previous one. Common to both the visits was Maverick's dealing with some emotional turmoil. In this iteration, the turmoil was to whether or not include Rooster (Goose's son) in the strike team and in the previous iteration, it was his inability to focus in the wake of Goose's death during ejection. Barring the climax, which in my opinion was shoddily written from a technical standpoint, the film was replete with spot-on portrayals of technicalities of combat aviation.

Thank you for this excellent video. I would like to point out one flaw, though. You stated that Maverick is "still a Captain". He was a Navy Lieutenant in the First Top Gun, and this is different from the Army/Air Force/Marines ranks. In the Navy, a Captain is an O6, or the equivalent of a Colonel. A Navy Lieutenant is an O3, or the equivalent of a Captain in the other services. So, while Maverick hadn't made Admiral (or General), he was just one step below that.
@CountArtha

There was also the moment Mav was talking to Rooster about losing a wingman and shared the same words Viper told him after losing Goose. Also the incredible photography showing the actual activity on a flight deck in both movies (moreso in the new one) during missions. You get to see just how dangerous, chaotic and noisy (even though not all the noise was hear but you can still tell) the deck is. Rooster telling Mav towards the end "give me some of that pilot shit!" which was an exact quote from Goose that warmed my heart. I did also notice that the insignia on the planes of the enemy was very reminscent of Tom Clancy's The Division insignia (a stylized black eagle inside an orange circle).

one thing to note at about 2:30, the other Hornet pilots definitely don't outrank Mav. He's still senior to them by a good 30 years, if not more. In the Navy, Captain is an O-6, which is a Colonel in the Army, Marines, and Air Force. Either way,, O-6 is the last rank before as a field grade officer doing what admirals and generals do: sitting behind a desk. The other pilots were if I remember correctly, a Lieutenant at best (what the other branches call Captain, an O-3.)

The little detail I loved was at the beginning. There’s a plaque from the 412th TW with Maverick’s name. I spent 15 months with the 461st Deadly Jesters (which is part of the 412th) as a civilian contractor (engine sme). I also appreciated that in the control room during the Darkstar flight, when the TC polled the room for takeoff, Engine was first. Flight Controls and Engine are the two most important systems in an aircraft, so they’re the ones who are checked in on first with these polls.

I noticed the 412th Test Wing too. That's an Air Force test unit not Navy. Ummm I haven’t read all the comments but there is a VERY strong reference to who the “enemy” is. The fact that they choose an F14 Tomcat as the plane that Maverick and Rooster flew to safety in speaks volumes of who the enemy is. When the US military retired the F14 in 2006 the only other country in the world that has F14’s is Iran and they are still flying them since the 1970’s. Now most of them are questionably airworthy they still have them.

DCS fans will have enjoyed the F-14 scenes, particularly the attention to detail for the start up - ground power, ground air supply, left and right engine cranks, manual wing sweep setting - but something that may have gone unnoticed and explains a plot point - they didn’t arm the ejection seats! That’s why pulling the rings failed. Not because the seats didn’t work, but because they didn’t flip the little switches on top of their seats. Also, that radar warning alarm when Rooster finally gets the radar and radio switched on. As soon as I heard that I thought “oh crap, it’s not over yet.” A little thing from the original Top Gun, in the mission scene Maverick is down to a single missile - “we’ve got a problem here, we’ve only got one missile left” - there were a few occasions earlier on in the film where the line “I’m too close for missiles, I’m switching to guns” is uttered, yet in that moment Maverick forgets that there’s a 20mm rotary canon located a few feet below his seat. Thankfully that is rectified in this one, as he opens the dogfight with said canon, and goes back to it when he runs out of missiles.

As an ex-Navy Avionics Tech most of the details I noticed were mainly technical and procedural specifically with the Tomcat and flight deck sequences. To their credit they got a lot more 'right' than 'wrong' compared to the original 86 release. The first one had TONS of technical errors some ranging from egregious to silly, but there are still a few details in this one that only a handful or people would catch. Some I'm sure had to do with the dramatic pacing (FYI, it takes more than 20-seconds to start both Tomcat engines) and some were outright silly (ONE SINGLE circuit breaker reset and ALL the RIO instruments light up? Nope!). I worked on a different aircraft and I'm sure someone who actually worked on the 14 could comment further. The most unrealistic thing was during the final scenes were the carrier deck crewmembers. Everyone's floatcoats, cranials and jerseys were pristine! After initial issue, that lasts for about 3-days! FAKE!! LOL!

There are better reviews on such places as the Fighter Pilot Podcast, Ward Carols YT site and Movers YT site. All by actual Navy pilots who have been through Top Gun and are combat experienced. They all generally love the movie for the effort that went into various aspects while acknowledging that movie making has a certain licence in order to move the story along and create moments of humour, clarity and enjoyment. Buying a round at the bar or being removed for putting your hat on the bar or your phone is a real thing at several of the clubs around Naval bases according to those other pilot reviews. Ed Harris, plays the weathered Admiral here but in The Right Stuff he played John Glen, test pilot and astronaut. The Dark Star scenes are a nod to The Right Stuff as well as Chuck Yeager's famous F-104 crash in the high altitude tests leaving him injured walking across the remote desert (in the movie) after ejecting. John Glen retired a Marine Colonel which is the equivalent of a Navy Captain, Mavericks rank. Ed Harris remarks in the movie (not the trailer) that Maverick should be a two star admiral by now, if not a senator. John Glen went on to become a US Senator. John Glen also resigned that position in the 90's to once again fly on the Space Shuttle as the oldest astronaut making him a relic of a bygone era still active in the space community. Just like Maverick.

One more similarity is this: In first movie Maverick was chasing the legend Viper and Viper was commenting on his moves trying to shoot him down. Same thing happened with Maverick as the instructor (in Viper's shoes) and Rooster trying to shoot him. And in both scenes the students failed to killed their instructors.

Also similar to SW trench run, the targeting computer fails, but dead aiming gets the job done. Rooster says "talk to me dad" almost as if invoking the "use the force Luke" line from Obi-Wan.

I saw the new one Top Gun: Maverick Memorial weekend, and it was so good!! I love the original as well!! I would say I am a die hard Top Gun fan because I watch the original every day and never get bored of it. I also have seen Top Gun: Maverick in theatres 2-3 times, so yeah I guess I am crazy lol!! There is also a throw back to a Few Good Men. Maverick comments about not being used to boats and Penny responds that he’s in the Navy. Very similar to Demi Moore’s line when they’re due to head out on a boat. ‘Jesus Christ Kaffee. You’re in the Navy for crying out loud.’

Great movie! Hard to ask for anything more. Tons of effort by all involved. Loved it. Val Kilmer brought it all together perfectly. Val has throat issues and didn't have to do the film (THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORT). Little details were important as Easter eggs in the film to watch for.

I missed the "feel the need ... the need for speed" line ... and situation of a close friendship. Also in my view .. there was A LOT of worried looks on Tom's face and not nearly enough grins and smiles. Sometimes I was wondering if it was MI7 .. or TG2 I was looking at. Still ... having cockpit scenes where you actually see some outside reference of where they are and where they go .. awesome film !

A neat thing to note, when Maverick teaches the team how to dogfight to survive the mission. This is a direct homage to Viper teaching the recruits, directly from Maverick goofing off on the radio like Viper and also how both veterans bested the recruits at all times when training

Ok here’s one, if you listen to the music when Mav meets Penny again, let’s dance by David Bowie is playing, it’s and Easter to Labyrinth. She “Jennifer Connelly” starred and danced in the film with Bowie in the same year Top gun was released in 1986. Much love ❤️ 👍👍👍

Late in the movie, when the Admiral is deciding what to do with Maverick after he stole a plane to fly the practice attack route, he was looking out through the blinds on the window, similar to the scene shot when Viper was looking out through the blinds when chewing out Maverick and Goose for flying below the hard deck to shoot Chester.

AND the football game came after the fight. It was obvious that there were two sides regarding the pilots which was also seen plainly in the bar. The football game forced everyone to work together and once the fun started they didn't notice that they were all working together after all. The big difference was in the volleyball game it was strictly a show off of bodies. But the football game had a goal and it was successful at completing that goal

Actually, a Captain in the navy is the same rank as a colonel in the other branches (o-6). I didn't quite understand the hate in the movie over this as making o-6 is a feat in its own right. Many a commissioned officers don't make it that high in the ranks before tapping out. And Mavericks rank shows that he was unwilling to sell his soul to the political game (and desk) that comes with getting a star. Top Gun was more realistic than people realize.

One thing that seems to have escaped everyones notice is that in Top Gun, Maverick takes off in one F 14 for the final mission, fights lands and gets out of a different one, look at the nose numbers on the planes. In Top Gun Maverick, he once again takes off in one airplane and comes home in another. I don't know it that was an intentional tip of the hat to the blooper in the first, but pretty interesting all the same.
