No dig soil maintains strong and healthy growth, with few weeds. Time input is small, apart from harvesting.
This is Somerset in the UK. Climate zone 8 with winters mostly above freezing, damp air and little sunshine.
The garden is three beds with no sides, for easy maintenance, few slugs and few weeds. I have time to care for the 10-12 different vegetables, also herbs and flowers.

This is my first big garden, and I must say, it’s pretty exciting lol. All I ever had in my city garden were a few tomatoes and some rhubarb. I just harvested a bunch of garlic scapes and basil, and turned it into pesto for the winter. I have never seen a garlic plant up close, and I didn’t even know there were garlic scapes in the world 🤣 I am growing so many things and every morning I go outside and stare at it. The cabbage is most interesting because I grew them from seeds and I have never ever seen a cabbage plant before. And they are actually growing, thanks to people like you who are willing to share your expertise. Much peace, love and light to you. ☮️💕

I just love being invited to take a trip round Homeacres. That small garden is amazing. I marvel at how productive it is year-round with all its disadvantages of tunneling roots, feral pigeons, lurking slugs, shade from almost all sides, and rock close to the surface. It's far from ideal yet shows how much and what a variety of food can be grown in a little corner that almost anyone can find.

I left a couple of over-wintered broccoli after the last few side shoots went to flower (hummingbirds love them!), wanting to try eating the seed pods. Dear son came in one morning totally stressed by the aphid population. I did remove some but left some to see what would happen. Two days later I came out to see 3 pine siskins chowing down on the aphids! I also have a sparrow that comes and cleans up all of the cabbage moth caterpillars. I love nature’s systems! This year’s new beds are in a sunnier location but do get a lot more wind exposure, much more of a slope as well, so I will be interested to see how they compare. Thank you for inspiring such curiosity. My land thanks you for the inspiration to heal the soil, the air thanks you for inspiring me to sequester carbon. In other words, thank you for being such a treasure.

Years ago before we bought our farm, I had planted chives in our front yard landscaping. We had rocks that formed three tiers next to the stairs leading to our front door. Chive seeds got lodged in between the rocks with no soil around. I kept trying to eradicate that plant and was never successful! I pulled and yanked and ripped at that plant and it only came back bigger, stronger, more resilient! Chives are an AMAZING gift!!!

I was interested to hear you talk about how the surrounding buildings and hedges etc. were affecting the growing stages in the small garden. I have a small garden, 5 x 10 m and have noticed this myself. The garden competes with boundary fencing, Potting shed, large neighboring trees and shrubs. I am trying to find the best arears in which to grow the different kinds of Veg along with introducing high level beds as I can't do the bending over bit. I started growing last year and got to harvest a few things but I really want to grow more. I find your videos on this subject very helpful, thank you. 👍Margaret

Your comments about competition from nearby trees has really got me thinking about my garden which is right next to a forest of tall pines and oaks, and there is little I can do about it because it is not my land. However, I did dig down about 2 feet to build a hugelbed and hopefully that will insulate my garden from tree root pressure.

Who needs mindfulness and meditation. Just watch Charles so informative and relaxing? Thank you. I had some signs of pyralid damage on my brassicas and potatoes. I had to re plant my sprouts in islands of my garden compost then they took off. The potatoes however seem to be outgrowing the herbicide from farm yard manure composted and 18 months old when spread. How is your trial going Charles?

Well done, that sounds promising. My potatoes are growing in the compost I was a little bit suspicious of, they definitely have a small amount of the pirated herbicide, but the potato plants are looking very healthy at the moment, and growing very rapidly

5:08 to 5:31 - I hope everyone listens to the part about the roots that are close to the surface - and how they benefit from compost just on top - as do the organisms below.

¡Gracias por tu encantador comentario y te deseo éxito en encontrar un lugar más cálido! O tal vez tener un hermoso túnel alto o un espacio cubierto para un crecimiento adicional.
