Small laptop performance tips in Adobe Premiere Pro
VideoRevealed receives many questions about system performance and specifically how laptops can be made to work better with Premiere Pro. Although there is no way to magically make an under powered laptop more powerful, there are ways to to tweak your workflow to make your editing experience more fluid. This tutorial will show you speed improvements including working with SSDs, why RAM is important and how CPU speed works with compressed footage.

The RAM and disk space are not the best but if your Projects are not too complex and do not contain a lot of effects, then you might be okay. You'll run out of disk space pretty quick so plan on adding an external hard drive.

Hey I'm using ROG G551JX with 1HDD and 8gb of Ram with NVIDIA GTX 950m. The write and read and write speed is averaging on 80mb/s. I'm so grateful that I found your video today because I finally understand what I needed to upgrade. Now what I would like to know is, do I "also" need to upgrade this hdd OR should I "only" buy a fast external ssd (Samsung EVO 750 SSD 120GB) and Ram upgrade to 16gb?

If that HD is 7200 RPM, then it's okay but if it's 5400 RPM, then you should replace it. Best solution is the SSD you mentioned.

Thjanks for the video. I think you are really knowledgable. I have a question: I have Mcbook pro 2017. 250GB hard drive, 2GB grafic ram, 16GB memory ram. Why rendering on premier-pro used to take 4-5 minutes while it takes 50-60 minutes for 3-4 minutes projects? Please let me know! My computer is still new. Do i have to buy a new fresh one? I cleaned unused caches, I switched OPENL to METAL on settings, It still doesnt work. I use 2017, 2018 still same. THANKS A LOT!!

Hi Mr. Smith. And what about using a third drive for exported movies, masters. Is it really necessary? It might be ideal, but in case we can not have access to many drives, where is the best place or the less harmful for exported files? Together with source media files disk? Together with the scratch/caché disk? Together with other documents that nothing to do with video work and with different partition maybe? On a external disc USB 3.0? Thanks a lot!

It's not "necessary" really. It's just easier if you have all your projects and media in one place.

Just found your channel and it is amazing. You are a great teacher! I have internal 512GB PCIe NMVeSSD which is extremely fast. I also have an external 512 which is the fastest USB-3 before moving to Thunderbolt. Basically, my internal SSD are as fast as Thunderbolt and my external is as fast as USB-3 can do. Wouldnt it makes sense to edit on laptop because it is faster? Is it better to use the slower (but still fast) ssd to hold the project files? I have always been confused on what is best. Why does it matter if it is on the desktop or not?
@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 5 жыл бұрын
I agree that your internal SSD is faster but you'll fill it up constantly and have to move after each project and you'll end up editing something that's too large to fit. It makes more sense to edit on the external SSD.

Does graphic card really make a big of difference? What do you think would be difference in render time of 10minute 4k video between gtx 1650 and mx150?
@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 4 жыл бұрын
Currently, Premiere Pro does not use the GPU for exporting so a faster card will not help. The overall export will benefit if you've used GPU accelerated effects, scale or rotation.

"Edit video" doesn't really tell me enough to know. The more complex the Timeline, with effects that aren't accelerated, the more difficult it will be to playback. Maybe HD, 4k, no way. Try using Proxies: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rN5goNVz1tnbl4k.html

You'd need to spend many thousands of dollars for a huge desktop workstation with a RAID to edit those files. An Ultrabook is not going to work at all with original media; you could try working with Proxies. Here's a tutorial: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b59joMWGxpbMXas.html

Hey. Thank you so much for another informative video. I'm having some serious trouble rendering and editing on my Dell Intel i5 7th Gen, it's just too slow for me. I have a 1TB ssd drive. So how do I install Adobe Premiere on that? What I have tried already is opening a new project FROM the ssd drive with all videos I wish to use in the project on the ssd drive, but it seems no different in speed. Perhaps I am missing something here? I'd really really appreciate some feedback. If I can edit quicker on my ssd it'll save me having to fork out for a computer. Many thanks again!
@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 5 жыл бұрын
Drive speed is only one part of the equation, you need at least 16GB RAM to make things speedy. Plus, a Core i5 is not a fast CPU. And if you're trying to edit highly compressed footage, or large frame sizes, that too will put a strain on it.

I would recommend using a Proxy workflow and not trying to edit 4k directly. Although you may be able to playback a single stream of 4k on a fast computer, by the time you add multiple tracks, effects and more, even the fastest system will have problems. Even my HP Z820 with 16 XEON cores, 64GB RAM and Quadro GPU chugs along on multiple tracks of 4k. Here's a tutorial: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b59joMWGxpbMXas.html

I've recently discovered your channel and subscribed. Every video amazes me with something new I need to write down and commit to memory to help my editing. I've been seeing a lot of similar videos all suggesting an external USB drive to help with processing power when editing, however, I am a numbskull and do not understand exactly how it is to be used. Do I connect the drive and use it to store all my video files and drag only the ones I need over to the laptop when I am editing? Do I put them all on the external hard drive and go ahead and edit normally, importing to Premiere Pro but leaving them on the external drive? I'm not even sure if I am wording this question well enough to be understood. I'm just trying to optimize my laptop's (PC) processing power with an external drive. Thinking of getting the recommended G-Tech G-DRIVE USB-C /USB 3.1 HDD 4TB drive. I have an HP Envy with Intel i7 8th Gen 1.8 Ghz 8-core and 16 Gb RAM. Thank you for any assistance in how I should be using an external drive properly to enhance my processing power!

@VideoRevealed 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, keep your media and Projects on the external drive, neatly organized into folders. This tutorial will help with that: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q8p7aNN8qZuZnqM.html The key is using a fast drive and fast connection. The USB Type C with the fast G-Tech drive would be perfect for that!

Great video! I was wondering on the best method on how to set up my media files/project files and media cache files. I have an Asus ROG laptop. It has 2 internal SSD drives. I am using one for the OS and programs. The second has 1TB which has my documents, photos, etc. I also have a Samsung portable T3 SSD, also 1TB. I was not sure which drives to store what on. Do I store my media cache and scratch disks on the internal 1TB SSD? or is that where i keep all my media and project files? Or should all that be on the external SSD? I'm trying to squeeze the best performance I can. Thanks!
@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 6 жыл бұрын
If the drives are all the same speed (in your case SSDs) then the performance is identical. It's just a matter of personal preference where you put things. I also have 2 SSDs on my Dell 5510 and I just put an Adobe Cache folder on my second 1TB SSD. The only issue with putting the cache on an external drive is, you have to always remember to have that drive connected before you run Premiere Pro.
@TJTV777
@TJTV777 6 жыл бұрын
That is the problem I ran into the last time. I kept forgetting to connect the drive. I just did a speed test on both drives and the internal SSD had a write of 490MB/s and read of 504mb. The external was pretty close at 368MB for write and 425mb. So what do you think about using the internal SSD(fast one) for media cache and exports, and the external for all my media, project files, audio etc? Thanks!

See my thread with Laci; you're not going to get full realtime playback and editing of 4k on any laptop. Especially if it's 4k drone footage - which is extremely compressed and taxes the CPU completely. If you could do this on a laptop then all editors in Hollywood would be doing it but they all work with low res proxies.

It depends on the footage you're editing and whether you're using lots of effects or compositing. For typical HD editing, Core i7, 16 GB RAM and a second SSD is a good start. For 4k, the same system but more RAM and a Proxy workflow is the way to go.

Excalibur Photography is correct, use proxies. GoPro 2.7k clips contain massive compression and your CPU is overworked trying to decode the frames in real-time. It all depends on your expectations. One track of HD with minima effects then yes, it won't be fast but you can export okay. If you do any thing with non-accelerated effects and lots of tracks, then you'll have a very hard time.

First of all, i wanna thank you for making this video. It's incredibly helpful to me and i'm sure to so many people. It's very slow with Premiere Pro CC 2015, the video clips play back keep dropping a lot frames even though i changed it from Full to 1/4. I saved the editing files on internal driver D. and the video clips files on internal driver E, while the software is on internal driver C. Please suggest me what to do? Thank you so much! Why are you using an old version of Premiere Pro? I'd suggest updating to CC 2018 first. Next, what type of video files are you using? If you're trying to playback 4k, your system is not powerful enough. Check your internal drives to make sure they are at least 7200 RPM or SSDs. Many internal drives on cheaper laptops are too slow for video.

@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 5 жыл бұрын
"Strong enough" is a relative term. For a single track of HD with no effects, maybe, but for 4k, nope. 16GB RAM is good, but you'll also need a fast hard drive, at least 7200 RPM or an SSD. The CPU will also affect performance. Some people call multiple tracks of 4k "heavy editing" and there isn't a computer that can do that smoothly, for that you need to work with Proxies.

Any gaming style laptop around $1,500 - $2,000 with minimum 32 GB RAM and a fast drive would give you a good HD editing experience. But uncompromised 4k editing is a whole different thing. I don't edit 4k, if I have to use the media I use Proxies. If you want something powerful for 4k it will cost almost $7,000. And I'm not talking about just opening a 4k clip, I'm talking about multiple tracks of 4k. That's a ton of data to move. Here's a loaded Dell Precision 7760 for almost $7,000: www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/dell-laptops-and-notebooks/new-precision-7760-workstation/spd/precision-17-7760-laptop/xctop776017us_vp?configurationid=c8b9d5f1-4350-4448-b6e9-4753e451f337

It all depends on the video format you're using, how complex your edits are, if you're using accelerated effects and on and on. They are smaller files of the original video. When you create your project, you enable proxies. Then whenever you drag in footage, Adobe Media Encoder will open and copy the file but at a smaller resolution. This makes it easier for your PC to process. You do all editing on proxies, then once you've finished, switch off proxies so Premiere Pro knows to read the originals, and Boom....... I'm sure Colin has done a video on these. If not, Jorde at Cinecom has done a good video explaining how to use them.

So my computer has a problem with not using my ram properly.i have 8gb ram and I did give premiere Pro the maximum ram from the settings which is around 6.5gb.but still when I render any video or export or play video on my timeline,my computer never use more then 3.5gb of ram .i only edit KZfaq videos just like urs.but I don't do any colour grading or anything. Based on Premiere Pro 2019 system requirements,the minimum ram requirement is 8 GB. So why my CPU is not using enough ram.

8GB of RAM is the minimum but you will still have performance problems, especially if you're using highly compressed media like H.264. There really isn't anything you can do to increase performance.
