I loved it but I hope they won't redeem Shin and that last scene was just a SIKE thing I was concerned since they put THE reason why Mao Mao Mao is so messed up for me way too early. But I'm glad this episode wasn't "I'll redeem someone important in just one episode just watch me Karen"

The most underrated Mao Mao episode imo, It has EVERYTHIGNG a Mao Mao episode needs and it still make its better, I mean, we saw Mao Mao Father and his real situatuion with his son PLUS we got one of the most heartwarming endings from all the show!!!! Its for me so far the perfect Mao Mao episode

I'd like to think Shin Mao was berated as a child due to his short stature, so he would end up marrying and reproducing with a woman who is big herself, expecting his children to be big to make up for his shortcoming. For the sisters, it worked, but for Mao Mao, he seems to have picked up more of the genes from his dad's side.

That would almost be the case. With Mao Mao's mother in the flash back being...well for lack of a better word, THICC. She is quite big though if she does make it into episodes I hope they translate that body type into it and don't shrink her.

Here's what I loved about the episode: After that epic fight scene, Mao Mao puts his father back into his armor without a word, and states that his father could have defeated the monster more easily. Why? Mao Mao doesn't respect his father because he's bigger than him, he respects his father because he's a legendary adventurer, his idol, and the man he wishes to one day become. Shin Mao being his son's size does nothing to reduce the respect Mao Mao has for his father.

Not necessarily, shows don't have to based on eastern animation to be good. Western shows just have to reject the previous of being a "Cartoon" and just tell a story properly. Good Story telling is good story telling.

I think it is because Anime is aimed towards anyone but mostly a mature audience. Western cartoons are mostly aimed at Children and are very childish. An example was the new powerpuff girls.

I'm assuming Shin was teased or had a poor self image due to his height so he always wears that armor. Mao Mao's sisters and mom are probably big as are most of his ancestors, so Shin probably felt disappointed in Mao Mao and reflected some of his own sense of shame into even more disappointment.

I'm under the impression his sisters are actually the size they're shown. Not all of them are wearing armor and some of them are smaller, but the armored ones are larger in a proportionate way, as well as the fact if you look closely at Mao Mao's mother, like her forearm size as she holds her baby, she doesn't seem to be a small lady, herself. So it's not unreasonable to think that the larger sisters took after Mom and the other sisters who are smaller are sort of a balance between the two, while Mao Mao is mostly like his father, biologically.

I was surprised they did this plot so quickly. I thought they'd take the "I want the appreciation of my dad" thing a bit farther for jokes and drama but not only is he going to therapy about it, but it's directly confronted here.

Honestly, Mao Mao, in many ways, is Shin's child. They're both obsessed with looking awesome and cool, they both mean well, and they both don't realize how their actions and ego can hurt others until it gets pointed out. Shin DOES care about Mao Mao but he ends up hurting him without realizing it, in part because he gets too absorbed in his own ego. As such, he doesn't end up taking account of what Mao Mao's feeling (and probably hasn't realized just how much he's screwed the poor guy up). Also, being fair, his sisters could really be all that and a bag of chips. Doesn't justify the neglect but it would *explain* why Shin Mao spent so much time fawning over them and not paying attention to Mao Mao (and also feed into Mao Mao's need to have others admire him, since he would have had a lot of competition). Time will tell. Hopefully, Shin Mao does fully learn from this and keeps this development in any future appearances.

Also, a small detail that is just the icing on the cake : if you listen closely during the scene when Shin says "Mao Mao, my son, you are not small", you can faintly hear notes from the opening theme song playing in the background. This kind of detail just wrap the whole thing up so well.

Im guessing what Mao Maos dads issue is that hes projecting. He hates that he is small, so he sees that part of himself that he hates in Mao Mao. So he takes out hos disappointment and self loathing on Mao Mao.

My guess is that Shin Mao lives somewhat vicariously through his kids His daughters are big so he treats them well But his son is small like him, he sees the worst of himself in Mao Mao hence his behaviour towards him Also, Now we Really need an episode with Mama Mao

Doubt it. I think that the reason he left his son aside is because he projected his own insecurities on him. Which granted it's not what a good father should do, but here is the thing, he comes from a family of Legendary heroes, he was under the same pressure as Mao Mao to become a legend, and he had to face it with his small body that he can barely move around. In a sense, he kept his son away from the Hero business, because he saw him as his younger self and didn't wanted to recognize that or put in him the same pressure. I don't think he kept saying '' There is no Shame in being small '' to belittle Mao Mao, he kept saying it to both his son and himself. I mean clearly he is no stellar parent but still, not as bad as the video portrays him to be.

It would have been infinitely better if Shin Mao's size wasn't a secret to Mao Mao at all. As in Mao Mao already knows and it was never about being as big as his dad, it was about being as big as his dad wanted him to be. It'd be just that everyone else wouldn't know that. Even though I haven't seen the show, I'm super sure the writers didn't even think to go that angle at all. No writer writing the typical "dad's high expectations are just him projecting his insecurities onto others to hide that he is in fact none of those things'" ever does.

One thing I love about this show is how while it's generally a comedy, it does have some very heartwarming moments. I was not expecting to tear up by the end of this episode. This show has very good writing so far and I can't wait to see more of it.

We see male ancestors who wear no armor (or at least show enough skin so we know that's their real height) later who are much taller then both of them. So from that we can assume that it could just be Shin Mao and Mao Mao. Shame seems to be a thing with Mao Mao and Shin Mao. But where our titular hero confronts his shame as the series goes by, Shin tries to hide his.

to be honest we generally see mao mao's interpretation of his ancestors, since he only now discovered his fathers tiny stature, its safe to assume he wouldn't know the true height of his ancestors. just their great deeds making them seem larger than life.

All we know about Badgerclops family life is that he had a bad relationship with his step brother and that his mother would say very hurtful things to him. He also seems to have a tendency to run away, which could be how he ended up in the Thicket Thieves.

I am glad that at least one recognizable reviewer is covering this highly underrated show. It is perfect as it is as a slice of life, monster fighting, comedy. Like shows before they became obsessed with world/lore/theory building.

Another thing that makes this so hard to watch is that Mao Mao was one hundred percent accurate in his recollection of events, we saw in Bao Bao and other episodes that Mao Mao has a tendency to misremember and exaggerate certain parts of his stories, like his coolness and Bao Bao's 'evil' actions. But here Shin Mao is exactly how his son always thinks of him or remembers it, like all the bad memories about his father ignoring him are something that are completely fact for him, because a man obsessed with all things big, has no problem making his son feel small

Funnily enough, it kinda aired a little earlier than it used to be. I don't remember which episodes are supposed to come before, but "Weapon of choice" was supposed to come before, as Shin mentions the sword being a glowstick.

I agree with you mostly on episode order, but honestly, I think Small should have aired after Weapon of Choice. I think this because in this episode, Shin Mao dismisses his weapon as a glowstick very quickly, while in Weapon of Choice, we have this big buildup on what Geraldine's power is going to be, we see light, and, yeah, it's a glowstick. If Weapon of Choice came out first, I feel like that joke would have been funnier because we wouldn't have known what Geraldine's power was until that big reveal. Having it get dismissed as a glowstick by Shin Mao, in my personal opinion, ruins the joke because we already know what Geraldine is, a glowstick.

That was a great analysis of the episode and i'm always up for some Shit Mao roasting. As for if the ending will lead to something, Parker Simmons has actually said that this wasn't Shin Mao's redemption, that'd be insane, there is still much meat to the bone.

Glad to hear that. Character redemption arcs should span over a few episodes, because no one changes in a day. Hopefully Shin Mao will be back in later episodes and slowly learn to respect his son.

Actually if you look closely at Mao Mao's family fantasy, the only other family member covered head to toe in armor that isn't Shin Mao is the sister in silver armor to our left, so while Shin Mao probably gave them new armor to make themselves bigger because he clearly prefers his sisters over Mao Mao, he still should have at least told Mao Mao at some point to get some armor, which would've also been tactical as his body would've been more protected. And it's possible that Mao Mao didn't know because Shin Mao was so insecure about his size that he never took off his armor when in the sight if others

While I believe the explanation for the size disparity amongst the Mao family is that Shin was small and made/had the armor made for him to seem larger and sought out a wife that was specifically very big so his kids would be large too, I personally wonder if Shin got smaller with age or something of the sort and used to be as big as his armor.

I think the issue got solved way to fast, maybe after getting yelled at by Mao, Shin leaves knowing that Mao never wants to see him again, but the two are reunited throught important event, like a Wedding or even a funeral, where they would simple talk things out.

It's metaphorical speaking. Mao Mao feels small when his own father kept making him feel small compare to his Legendary Sisters until he reached his rage breaking point when all he wanted to impress him and prove he's as big as his family.

mmmm, not so much "evil" but more along the lines of jerks that looked down on their little brother, seeing him as nothing more than irritation or disgrace to the Mao Clan because of his height, compared to his previous ancestors.

It is possible that Shin was big at some point, but as he grew older, he began to grow a bit more feeble, and thus, uses the armor to keep up appearances and to keep his growing insecurities in check.

I think all the sisters are naturally bigger than Mao Mao and were born larger to start. It might be a bit man bashy but I do get the feeling that all the women in the family are larger and stronger. Shin was probably expecting Mao Mao to inherit his mother's size and Shin's own fighting prowess, like all his sisters. But while he's got a heroic adventurers heart, our Sheriff got his dad's genes when it comes to size.

Shin Mao is what we would call, a tiger parent. Tiger parents tend to say to their children that their efforts in school aren’t good enough when they achieve something below an A or +A just like how Shin Mao says that the Ruby Pure Heart is smaller than the ones he has seen (it would be interesting if we got a look into those gigantic rubies though). Tiger parents also compare how their child does in school compared to the other child or children who do better than him/her. Shin Mao tells Mao Mao that he should’ve been more like his sisters. These are just a few things that I picked up watching Small. Also, I wonder if Parker was doing some research on tiger parents while developing Shin Mao.

I ended up kind of liking Shin Mao at the end of the episode, mainly because he is finally willing to step down from his pedestal and show some humility while talking to Mao Mao. He is finally realizing and acknowledging his behavior to some extent (Not completely. Baby steps), and there is just something so genuine with his voice and expressions at the end of the episode.

No I don't think the females are big, I think it's because The Sisters were older than Mao Mao and more wise because of such However, Mao Mao might also be a runt considering the size of how he looked when he was small (very cute uwu) making the father work more with the older sisters than with the young runt as they fight for attention.
