Don't know where to start with your lawn? I've started the renovation of a small project lawn and I wanted to explain the steps as we go through this season. For those of you just starting out on your cool season lawn this will be a program that will guide you in how to transform and fix your lawn. The first steps are outline in the video here...measuring the yard, soil testing, crabgrass pre-emergent, starter fertilizer, and an application of soil hume.

ColonelK0rn You don’t help neighbors who don’t deserve help. If they are enthusiastic and energetic about learning with self motivation, yes. But if they expect you to do all the work and pay for everything, no. Not everyone deserves help. Some people rise to the top, and some people stay down in the muck and do nothing but complain. It’s ok. It’s what makes the world go around.

I have found using Google Maps and the "Measure Distance" feature (right-click) is really helpful for measuring the square footage of a yard. Even if you have a butt-load of trees, turning OFF the Satellite View should show fairly accurate lot lines.

I don't plan to level out this yard but if you were and also reseeding cool season grass works the best in early fall....So around the beginning of September or a little earlier even if you get frost or cold weather earlier in the fall season like far northern places. I will plan to overseed this yard right around that beginning of Sept timeframe.

Wondering why you wouldn’t go through and pull those dandelions by the root before applying your pre-e? Just curious. I realize usually there aren’t already dandelions when using a pre-e, but in this case, couldn’t you save yourself using more post-e weed spray? Thanks!
@ryanknorrlawncare

Pre-emergent doesn't prevent dandelions and there are so many here that are well established that pulling them would not be an easy task and would likely leave some pretty large holes in the soil. I'll spray them soon when temps are right.
