Another great video guys keep up the great work. Love the setup and cant wait to see the retort results. I have heard about charging mercury before but not using sodium hydroxide for alluvial or using the steel BB's in the tumbler. Are the BB's just to crush/break the cons up a bit more or do they help with the amalgamation?

00Shivan00 g'day mate, alluvial gold can often get a coating on it that stops it all from amalgamating properly, sodium hydroxide helps 'clean' the gold so the mercury picks it up better. It also helps neutralize any sulphides that are in there. The NaOH can also be used to charge your mercury. I just stick about 50ml in the water (distilled preferably) and tumble for about 30mins, then tip it out and replace with clean tap water and add mercury. The ball bearings are for both reasons you stated, and seem to help a lot.

Cheers, have not been out for a dig in a while but have a whole heap of cons i want to check, i figure it cant hurt to see if i missed anything before they get dumped. Hope its not too hot over that way.

G'day Trent. I know this is an old video but you shared some great knowledge. Do you know how many grams of gold you can get per gram of mercury?
@Diggerdude293 жыл бұрын
I use 2:1, 2 ounces of mercury per 1 ounce of expected gold

great vid, how did you make the amalgam tumbler?
@Diggerdude298 жыл бұрын
+Heartz glad you like the vid. The amalgam barrell is a Lortone rock tumbler, it was purchased through Aussie sapphire online store.

Gday Trent, great videos. Where can you get the mercury in Australia...I thought it was taken out of use but perhaps not for gold miners? This seems like a way to capture all flour gold that sometimes is so small it is hard to see in a pan. Like your retort too..good example of Aussie ingenuity. Well done mate!

+Mike 05 Thanks Mike. I have seen mercury for sale online before but its usually bloody expensive. I got most of mine from local old fellas who had it in there sheds. Apparently there is some type of old switches you can recover lots from too.

Trent King Not certain about in your neck of the woods, but here in the States our old thermometers had Mercury inside of them. You can recover it by carefully cutting them open with a handheld glass cutter and draining out the Mercury... Hope this might help someone... Interesting video...!

Troy Stutsman; There is a good reason why the world tries to ban mercury 100 %. If you work with mercury in this way, accident easily happen. It's very toxic and will never leave the environment. A Dolfin is allready toxic waste because of the high mercury levels (seriously).

@@Diggerdude29 can you give me any advice as to whom to ask for mercury? I checked, and it is very expensive to buy it online.
@Metal_Master_YT3 жыл бұрын
@@PieterPatrick No, its not a very good one. not a good reason at all. they want to get rid of mercury, but mercury when its in its metallic form is mostly harmless since it cant easily absorb into the body. and don't even mention vapors, mercury metal makes almost no vapor at room temperature.
