The project continues with the application of the finish. My main goal in this segment is to show how I achieve the sunburst pattern with tinted lacquer.
Before applying the sunburst, I first seal the wood with a couple coats of 50% thinned lacquer. I have used vinyl sanding sealer in the past, but had a couple incidents where the lacquer top coats did not seem to adhere very well. 50% thinned lacquer penetrates into the wood and offers a good surface for the top coats.
After the thin lacquer is applied, I mask off the areas I am trying to avoid tinting and proceed to spray the sunburst in 3 or 4 stages using yellow, red and brown dyes in separate applications.
