A big theme of The Lord of the Rings is the importance of pity. If Frodo hadn't taken pity on Gollum throughout the story, Gollum wouldn't have been there to bite off his finger in the end and the world wouldn't have been saved. Tolkien has said that nobody in Middle Earth could have voluntarily destroyed the ring, not even Sauron. It took Frodo and Bilbo's pity to bring Gollum to Mt. Doom, and that pity allowed Gollum to fall into the volcano by accident (or by divine intervention).
@evenmoor
@evenmoor 5 ай бұрын
There's actually a lot of subtle divine intervention throughout. Recall how Gandalf told Frodo in Moria, "Bilbo was _meant_ to find the Ring, and so you, also, were _meant_ to have it. And that is an encouraging thought." There are a lot of seeming-coincidences, chance meetings, and the like in _The Lord of the Rings_ that start to add up, culminating in the eucatastrophe that saw Gollum fall into the Cracks of Doom with the Ring.

An Epilogue for what happened to the various characters: Frodo remains in the West, and never returned to Middle Earth. Neither did the Elves. Sam became Mayor of the Shire and lived to a ripe old age. But when his wife died, he passed the Red Book to his daughter, and was allowed to sail West to join Frodo and live out his final days (fun fact, the girl who plays Sam's daughter in the movie is the real life daughter of Sam's actor. And, if you want to be made to feel old, that little girl is now grown up and recently graduated from Harvard). Merry and Pippin remained Knights of Rohan and Gondor respectively. They frequently traveled to Gondor and helped in Aragorn's efforts to stabilize Gondor's borders. Merry eventually became Master of Buckland (and, by extension, the ruler of the Shire), but remained in Aragorn's service for his entire life. When they died, they were both buried in Aragorn's family tomb in Gondor. Legolas didn't go West with the other elves. In the books, he made a promise to Gimli that they would show each other the wonders of their respective peoples. And they spend years traveling around Middle Earth together. Gimli also helped to rebuild the shattered gates of Minis Tirith. Eventually, when Gimli was getting old, Legolas built a boat for them and they both sailed West together. Making Gimli the only mortal who wasn't a Ring Bearer who was allowed to go to Valinor. Uh...who else.... Aragorn, because he's Numenorian, remained King for something like 122 years. He did eventually die of old age, and Arwen didn't long outlive him. The book appendixes don't say a great deal about the line of kings after him, but it does indicate that he had successors. And during his rule, the restored kingdom of Gondor and Arnor enjoyed unprecedented prosperity (Aragorn basically was king of everything. He was King of Gondor, and Arnor, which made him King everything West of the Misty Mountains, and everything south of them except Rohan - which remained independent - and he even claimed huge swathes of the lands to the far south which were once ruled by Sauron's allies. The lands on Dale and the old Elf Kingdoms remained independent but were technically protectorates. Faramir married Eowyn, and he remained very close friends with Pippin. Pippin named one of his sons Faramir. Neither Merry nor Pippin named any of their kids "Boromir", which I'm kind of salty about, since he did die for them. Eomere became the King of Rohan. That's all I can remember right now. Tolkien basically wrote an entire book as the afterword for his book, to explain what happened to everyone. It's a chonky read.
@evenmoor

Why did Frodo leave in the end? Frodo suffered a great deal, both in the physical sense and the emotional and spiritual, over the course of the story. Remember in "The Two Towers" when Galadriel told Elrond "In his heart, Frodo begins to understand: the Quest will claim his life. You know this. You have foreseen it." Frodo could return to the Shire in body, but his heart and soul were too wounded to be at peace there. The ship will carry him and the others to Valinor, basically a Heaven on Earth, and the only place where Frodo could now find comfort and healing. Sam also sailed for Valinor many, many years later, after his wife died of old age, for he, too, had been a Ringbearer, if only for a little while.

@@marieclaudeb.2366the three elven rings were created by elves through Sauron's teachings, but not by Sauron himself. He never touched them, so he could never corrupt them. Still, after the creation of the One, they would have been corrupted the moment they were used, so they were hidden. After Sauron lost the ring, he could not corrupt them anymore, so they were used again, but as little as possible in order not to expose them. Their strenght helped Elrond and Galadriel to keep their domains safe and "sacred", and helped Gandalf to keep his own spirit "fired up" and not to fall into the darkness.

Aragorn released the army of the dead because he said he would. They were cursed because they failed to fulfill their oath to Gondor, and were called upon to fight in its defense. Basically, Aragorn had called on them to defend Gondor, not to defeat Sauron. If Aragorn pushed them to do that, he would be keeping them, not releasing them. So he kept his word, by only holding them to theirs, nothing more. It was the right thing to do. And also probably unwise to anger an army of the dead, especially one with a history of desertion

Of course, in the books that army wasn't as overpowered as in the films either; in the books they couldn't actually harm anyone since they were incorporeal, they could only instill fear, which wouldn't have been as useful against Sauron's armies when fighting in Mordor anyway.

To me there is no trilogy like The Lord of the Rings, this is the best one but I suggest you to watch The Hobbit, another trilogy of Peter Jackson that he made after the success of this one. The Hobbit also comes from a book written by Tolkien (he actually wrote this one first, way before The Lord of the Rings) and tells the story of young Bilbo, 60 years before the events related in Lord of the Rings, and how he had and adventure with Gandalf and many Dwarfs, how he fought Trolls and a dangerous Dragon and how he found the Ring of Power. The movies are not as perfect as the Lord of the Rings but that trilogy is still enjoyable. The actor who plays young Bilbo is just perfect and the Dragon is fantastic.

Little note to clear up any confusion: The daggers/short swords that Aragorn gave to the hobbits in the first movie are very old weapons from the kingdom of Arnor which have enchantments on them that can sever the wraith's anchor to the physical world. Once Merry stabs the witch king in the leg, it basically turns him mortal which allows Eowyn to deliver the killing blow. However, the powers of the witch king enable him to inflict a deadly and semi-magical poison on any who hit him. That, combined with the hit from his flail onto Eowyn's arm is what caused her and Merry to become gravely wounded until they are brought back into the city to be healed by Aragorn.
@evenmoor
@evenmoor 5 ай бұрын
It's worth noting that the weapons that the hobbits got in _Fellowship_ were acquired under very different circumstances in the book, making their effectiveness against the Witch-King less seemingly out-of-the-blue. The Kingdom of Arnor, by the way, was the sister-kingdom to Gondor; Arnor collapsed a long time prior to the events of the story (coincidentally, around the same time that the last king of Gondor vanished without heir). Aragorn is the direct descendant of the last king of Arnor. Aragorn being the heir to the Kingdom of _Gondor_ is actually very complicated and politically fraught, and extremely controversial! It was not at _all_ guaranteed that his claim would be acknowledged.

@@dannydgdg7635 Hey, why don't you look up the barrow blades from the books? You know, the ones that Tom Bombadil found when he rescued the hobbits from the barrow-wight, and then told them about how they were made by the smiths of Arthedain specifically for the wars against Angmar? Arthedain, if you don't remember, being one of the three Dunedain realms that came about during the fall of Arnor. Also consider that in the books, Galadriel didn't even give Merry and Pippin daggers; she gave them belts of silver and gold. If you pause the film right when merry stabs him, you can clearly see the bend of the Witch-King's knee and how narrow it is compared to a torso, with open space immediately to the right and left of it. I'm just not sure where you're getting your information from.

You mentioned several times about the Hobbits doing so much despite their small size and pacifistic nature - Merry & Pippin being so brave and becoming warriors, Frodo saving the world, Sam saving Frodo, etc. I was glad you remarked on it, because that was really core to Tolkien's world view and point in the books - that even the smallest of us (not just small by size) can make great changes in the world. Tolkien loved his "old" England, the rural land and people, the village life. And he hated what industrialization was doing to it all. The Shire was his version of that England he loved so much, and the Hobbits represented rural English people.

Merry had always 'looked after' Pippin, who behaved like a careless teenager (which he was among his own kind) throughout most of the movie. When Pippin says to Merry, "I'm going to look after you", he is every bit a grown and mature hobbit. Also, throughout the movie Frodo tells Sam how glad he is that Sam is with him...until the end when he says that he is glad to be with Sam. Frodo recognizes Sam then as an equal, and even an esteemed friend. The movies don't reflect this, but Frodo is fifty years old and Sam's employer. Sam is 36, barely an adult in Hobbit reckoning. He is also of a lower class and a person of simple tastes. England, especially before WWI, was highly class conscious, as shown by Sam (a member of the servant class) calling Frodo (a member of the upper class) Master/Mister while Frodo called Sam just Sam. Tolkien, as every officer in WWI, had a bat man, a sort of personal servant. He was so impressed by the loyalty, bravery, and strength of that man and of the foot soldiers who fought with him that he made Sam what he himself called, "the real hero".

Frodo never fully healed from his wounds, which means he could never stay happy in Middle-Earth. He, Gandalf, Bilbo, and the rest are going to the undying lands (Elf heaven essentially), where mortal beings usually aren't allowed. An exception is made for Frodo and Bilbo because they were ring bearers. In the appendices we learn that Sam becomes mayor of the Shire and lives a long and happy life. After his wife dies, he also sails west to the undying lands because he was briefly a ring bearer. So Frodo and Sam do meet again. Merry and Pippin spend their days with Aragorn in Gondor, and when they die they are buried next to Aragorn's grave. Legolas and Gimli remain friends, and their friendship heals the rift between Dwarf and Elf. When they reach their end, they also sail to the undying lands together. It's a massive honor for Gimli, being a dwarf, and never a ring bearer. Once they leave, the fellowship is gone from Middle Earth forever.

I myself have read them 6 times. Thank god Jackson directed this undertaking. In 2000, Amazon and several other booksellers polled readers, “What was the greatest work of fiction of the 20th Century?” LOTR, the books, topped several of those polls. This was over a year before the first movie (“Fellowship”) was released in late 2001. So, the books are definitely worth looking into. Great reaction, btw!

Adnan is a good dude amd reviewer. I like some small touches in this movie... Sam is almost the hero of the story. Sam was reluctant to return the ring to Frodo, because he didnt like seeing Frodo suffer. That Frodo knows he failed in the task and that only he Sam know what happened in the cave. You can see in many scenes, the hollow feeling that Frodo has. Like everyone bowing to the four Hobbits, but Frodo seems to feel he doesn't deserve the adulation. Frodo could only smile without burden as he was leaving on the boats.

I see that others already explained to you where Frodo went and why. You should know that the history of this imaginary world is enormous, it goes back for thousands and thousands of years and innumerable events, peoples, conflicts, dramas, languages, everything. It's unbelievably complex. At the beginning, the supreme God, Eru Iluvatar created pure angelic beings: the higher class called Valar and the lower class called Maiar. He gave them a theme to sing and their singing created the world(this is far more complicated of course, but I can't tell you all of the events of the Silmarillion in a comment). Then 14 of the Valar - 7 men ansd 7 women chose to come and live in this world. They are like demigods, governing this world. They all live in Valinor a.k.a. the Undying Lands. As for the Maiar, they are many more. At one point a long time ago the Valar decided to send 5 of them to help the peoples of Middle Earth in their fight against evil. They are the wizards. Disguised as old men, they are not allowed to show their real nature and powers and they are not allowed to rule by force. They can only help through wisdom. Gandalf's original Maia name is Olorin, Saruman's is Curumo. Sauron was also a Maia but he became corrupted. His original name was Mairon. The balrog is also a corrupted Maia. When Gandalf died after defeating the balrog, he was sent back by Eru Iluvatar himself and this time he was allowed to reveal a bit more of his real powers. If you'll watch the Hobbit, you'll meet a third wizard, Radagast the Brown (real name: Aiwendil).

So Adnan, about where they're going on those ships. You remember that through out all the movies they talked about how the Elves are leaving Middle Earth. In case you didn't know, Elves are not humans (the pointy ears). Tolkien wrote that the god Ilúvatar created the Elves and the Humans (or as Tolkien calls them "Men"). His gift to the Elves was to never die from old age, or don't fall sick to any worldy diseases. But their spirits still age, they grow tired of the world. Then as Tolkien wrote it, "...whereas to Men, he gave strange gifts". Their gift was death, only to inhabit the world for a short time and then be gone forever, and no one but Ilúvatar knows where they go after they die. The Elves also have a "heaven" called Valinor, and that's where they're going on those ships. It's being referred to in the movies as "the undying lands". Elves who are killed, whose bodies are destroyed, also end up in Valinor, in the Halls of Mandos (Mandos is the keeper of the dead souls of Elves). There he can hold them as long as he pleases, and it's a place of rest and contemplation. When he deems fit to release a soul, they exit the Halls, and manifest physically again, in Valinor and reunites with all their loved ones. So essentially, when the Elves go to Valinor, they go to die. They leave the world forever. The books/movies take place a the end of the 3rd age, and also at the end of the time of the Elves. The 4th age belongs to humans ( or as Tolkien called them "men"). Bilbo and Frodo are Ringbearers, and so they were granted a special honor to go to Valinor as well. As you saw, Frodo was hurt badly, and his wound never healed. Essentially when he steps onto that ship, he dies. You can see he looks sick, and finally when he's on the ship, he looks healthy and smiles again. It's the saddest, and the most happy moment in the film. BUT... the books also hint that when Sam was an old man about to die, a SHIP came for him too. Because he was also a Ringbearer, if only for a short time. He will be reunited with Frodo at the end. You can read about all this in "The Silmarillion".

I have eagerly awaited your conclusion to this film series my favorite film series and have thoroughly enjoyed watching you experience them for the first time. Might I suggest next you watch Dune (2021). It is the only film since Lord of the Rings that gives me a similar experience it's also based on books that I read when I was younger. If Lord of the Rings is a mythology with clearly-defined good and evil, Dune is the muddled reality of humanity. Very different tone of film and subject matter but I encourage you to check it out. Thank you for your reactions.

Two suggestions: 1) because you enjoyed LotR so much, I'll recommend Pirates of the Caribbean, a fun adventure series that is a bit more in the comedy vein, and which also has the actor who played Legolas (Orlando Bloom). The first three movies are generally agreed to be good, the 4th and 5th not so much. (Though I think they have their good moments, and always recommend people make up their own minds after viewing.) 2) A completely different recommendation: The Others, starring Nicole Kidman, which is a spooky suspense story that I always like seeing people watch for the first time. Yes, I'm recommending it for my own selfish reasons. But I do think you'll enjoy it, it's a really good movie.

In the end, Samwise was the real hero. Lord of the Rings is one of the best stories ever written and filmed, and this is coming from a guy who first saw Star Wars in the theater back in 1977 when I was only 6 years old. Aka I've always been a Star Wars fan, but in the end LLOTR is the best trilogy (we shall not mention the garbage Disney movies...).

A bit incorrect, he does NOT leave with L and G, they left all on thier own , Sam was granted passage to Valinor and sailed on an Elf-Ship after Rosie passed. The movie said Bilbo and Frodo, Gandalf, Galadriel and Elrond left on "the last ship to leave Middle-Earth" but that is DEF not true, there were MANY more ships that travelled to Valinor, Legolas and Gimli BUILT a ship and Sailed to Valinor long after, many years after Aragorn himself died

I am going to add my recommendation to watch "The Hobbit". I know people say they are not as good as LOTR, and they are not, but it is a pretty good adaptation of the book, with a few additions, and it will give you some more background of the story, you will see quite a few familiar faces and all in all it is a pretty good trilogy, if it is not compared with LOTR! It is the Best Western in my opinion. It's four episodes and a grand total of six hours and twenty four minutes, so it would have to be broken in parts. In all fairness, it is not as popular as the first three I mentioned so you may not want to do it.
