Here are the smallest lightest most compact cameras to take when travelling or around town that can still do blurry backgrounds (depth of field) without huge lenses and camera bodies. My favorite lightweight compact small camera is the Panasonic Lumix GX850 with the Olympus 45mm f1.8 lens. Now that's tiny! This video goes from biggest of the smaller cameras handworks it's way down to the ver smallest, starting with the smallest of the big pro cameras (Sony alpha A7 and A9 line), the Sony RX1R- the smallest full frame camera, then the 6300 6500 line of APSC crop sensor lenses, then the whole micro four thirds MFT Panasonic Lumix lineup- culminating with my favorite of all- the tiny Lumix GX850 which has the same micro four thirds sensor, takes the same lenses at the big boys... but is as tiny as a deck of cards and shoot 4K! But this video is not about big lenses- it's about the smallest possible lenses and cameras that can create blurry backgrounds and great bokeh while on a budget. Enjoy the video and tell your friends about this channel- MarkusPix. Here is a downloadable chart of test images shot with each camera and lens- and the prices of each one www.markusrothk...
Here are a couple of cooking videos shot with the Sony RX1R on the jib • Neatloaf Raw Vegan Pla... and • Make Your Own Healthy ...
Here is the video shot in the desert using the GX850 as the main camera (with polarizing filter) and a Sony R100 VI for the wide shot
• 4 things for Depressio...
Borderline “small” but best quality: A7 w Voigtlander 40mm 1.2 or Zeiss 85 1.8 $1200 or even a Mitakon 50mm f0.95 $800 but its really heavy and not that compact. The most compact A7 lens with acceptable blur is Sony 55.18 $1000 But the Voigtlander 40mm 1.2 $1000 has the most pleasing looking images
basic A7, A7s, A7r $1000
A7sii , A7rii $1400
A7iii $2000
A7riii almost $3000
Panasonic
GX85 -with EVF electronic view finder $600
GX8 $600**
GX9 $900
G9 $1300 not small
GH5 $2000 no video limit not small
Sony RX1R $3,300 more features than Leica Q which is $4500 but has 28mm lens too wide for me not enough blurry bg with people
Micro 4/3 PanasonicLumix GX850 $500 w Olympus M Zuiko 45mm 1.8 $250 almost as good as 42.5 F1.2 over $1000 on GH5 over $2000 or GX8/GX9 The Olympus is also autofocus- SUPER FAST! There is also a 45mm F1.2 $1000 but its considerably bigger and point of this video is the smallest
Rokinon has a 35 1.2 but I do not rec manual lenses w GX850 no viewfinder
used Panasonic GM1 or GM5 on ebay
PanasonicLumix GX850 w 25 for headshots
6300/6500 $1000 w Voigtlander 40mm 1.2 $1000 no autofocus
6300/6500 w Rokinon 50mm 1.2 manual lens $400
6300/6500 w Sony 50 1.8 $300 or even Sigma30 1.4 $300
yes there are lower F stop lenses but they are considerably bigger

I cannot agree more. The Olympus 45mm F1.8 is a little gem of a lens. I use it on my second-hand GX-1 body and get great images, even in the studio when I don't want to use my DSLR's. I would even say that the 45mm is getting on par with the magical Limited prime lenses I have for my Pentax bodies for serious work. So much so, it is the perfect back-up to the K-1 and 77mm F.18 Limited at a fraction of the cost. It really is the "law of diminishing returns", yes the Leica designed 42.5mm as superb, but it is big, heavy, yet the Olympus 45, is just small light and just has that X factor on IQ for a fraction of the cost.

that Oly 45mm f1.8 was my favorite lens on the featherweight Lumix G6 . When i moved to the G85 , i took the Pana 42.5mm f1.7 instead because of the closer minimum distance and flatter field, more suited for general photography . But i still have the 45 and would probably use it again for a portrait session.

My favorite tiny camera is my Sony NEX-5T (APS-C) with the tiny 16mm f/2.8 lens, or if I want blurry backgrounds the FE 50 f/1.8 looks great! And all three of these were relatively inexpensive!

Absolutely love my "new" GX9 that I bought second hand from a local camera store. It had 113 shutter count when I bought it...and came with as 12-60 kit lens, battery and a the grip extension base plate (I have big hands, so this is very nice). All together...a whopping US$360 (the owner gave me an $65 break when I mentioned that I worked nearby...I did not even ask...how cool is that!). It is my favorite M4/3. I usually pair it with the Lumix 20/1.7. If I really need blurry backgrounds, I have over 30 "fast" vintage lenses, which also do well when mounted via a focal reducer. Of course, these vintage lenses are not little or light, save for something like a Jupiter-8 (50/2) or Jupiter-3 (50/1.5). The later lenses are relatively small, light (aluminum bodies) and deliver pleasing results to my eye. Yes, I do like manual focus when I can take my time; the GX9 has a very nice viewfinder w/focus peaking...so I am used to this process. [PS: I almost always buy used cameras from people that bought brand new and never used the damn thing...these deals are always around...if you have a bit of patience.]

I have the same camera and love it as well (although mine is called the GX7 mark iii). I bought one of the last remaining new ones with the 15mm 1.7 Leica lens kit, and it’s just so great. I love it so much that I am seriously considering getting a S5IIX later this year, based upon my experience with the GX7iii. Great ergonomics, nice menu system, beautiful to look at (I have the silver one). Plus there are tons of lenses available. I haven’t even really played around with the monochrome simulations yet; just doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day. Panasonic is doing great these days.

I have loads of cameras but, I used my mates Pen pl9 and it handles and just feels great in the hand. I bought the early Olympus OMs for the same reason. Pens just have that tactile feel and you can use most glass on them, adapted. Last thing, I’m fed up with the crap written about sensors, and full frame, etc. Camera manufacturers just love manipulating the soft brained public who love jargon. I love this mans straight talking easy going views that just make sense. As photography and graphics have been my business professionally for almost all of my working life, “A good big un will always beat a good little un”. From film to sensor, to everything in photography as I know it, the less you blow it up, grain or pixel, noise, whatever, the more there is the more it affects the image, good or bad, is subjective. For 9/10s of the imaging world, massive reproduction size aside, cinema screen size, billboard posters etc, it’s a 6x5 world, that almost anything can shoot. Get the shot, and screw the sensor!

Those were all discussed in part two of this video. The 42.5 1.2 is not a small lightweight lens. The Sigma 30 1.4 is a great lens, but best for APSC, again, not a "smallest lightest" category for MFT kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qbiKd6x4q97KZKc.html

@@MarkusPix that's for sure ! The smallest lightest 20mm 1.7 is an amazing pancake lens but a bit slow to focus. I offered the 30mm 1.4 to my wife and the two advantages are that it only uses the center of the lens so it's extremely sharp on m43 and the other one is that 60mm (30x2) becomes a better option than the conventional 50mm focal length, just remove the lens hood and it becomes quite compact. Markus, your videos are awesome, just saw the one about your career, you are amazing, keep it going !

I really like micro 4/3. I got a like new Olympus EP-5 with 5 axis stabilization for under $300 and the Zuiko 45mm for $200. The best thing about a mature system like micro 4/3 is that you can usually find good deals on barely used gear. I even found an EM-1 with battery grip and a shutter count of 2200 for $299. Tough to find deals like that in APS-C or full frame. Your videos help put the fun back in photography. Thanks for that.

You missed out the rather lovely but tiny Olympus Pen E-PL7 which generally out-scores the GX850/GX800, plus it has a flash hot shoe which also mounts the optional EVF VF-4, plus body-IS to stabilise those little unstabilised lenses. Try it with the pancake Panasonic Lumix GX Vario PZ14-42.

I have the GX800/GX850 and I regularly use it with the 12-32 kit lens, the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 and the Panasonic 42.5 f1.7, it's an awesome compact system. I have the Panasonic G7 and a couple other lenses for situations that don't require such a small setup or when I need a viewfinder and/or bigger lenses. I'm sure that FF have his advantages but I love the Micro 4/3 system.

I have the Olympus 45mm f1.8. I never bought the Panasonic 42.5mm f1.2 because I don't have room in my camera bag. As a wedding photographer I bring two backpacks and that's enough. My main go to lens is the Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 and second lens is the Panasonic 35-100mm f2.8 and if there is something else I want to get then I'll pull some of my other lens out of my bag. For weddings always bring three cameras and three flashes and a bunch of lens so I have backup gear to backup gear. I've even done a few engagement shoots with my Olympus PEN E-PL5 and Olympus 17mm f2.8, Olympus 25mm f1.7 and Olympus 45mm f1.8 and I bring the little flash also that came with the camera.

It is not possible for the sensor size to determine depth of field. Background blur, or bokeh, is not dependent on sensor size. It is dependent on the focal length of the lens. For example, a 50 mm lens on a micro four thirds sensor will give the same apparent field of view as a 100 mm on a full frame, but it will have greater depth of field. This is not because of sensor size. It is because of the different focal length of the lens. In this case, to get the same depth of field as the full frame lens, you need to increase the aperture (lower the f#) by a factor of 2.

If you have an A7iii, I wouldn't trade that for a GX850, that's like trading a Ferrari for a Chevy. Sure both get the job done, but... The A7 has a much bigger sensor so you can easily get amazing depth of field and sharpness, plus it has a great electronic viewfinder. I have the GX850 as a travel buddy when I want the lightest smallest thing possible that can do blurry backgrounds, but the A7 is more serious for pro stuff. Why just have one camera? Have one for each purpose like I do

I have the GM5. It is the kind of camera you keep. I moved on later to APS-C then now Full Frame but if I had the lens that is available now I probably would have been happy with MFT. I moved on for better low light performance. Once I find the lens that I am looking for I will carry my GM5 as a backup to my Full Frame. I do have the Panasonic 42.5mm 1.7 which is a really good lens which is why I have kept it with my kit 12-32 (not very good) but the 42.5 (good for portraits) is too tight so it limited what I could do with it. I have been looking for a fast prime to stick on to my small GM5. I was thinking maybe the Olympus 25mm 1.8?

Hi Markus, Newbie here. Love the knowledge you possess. I'm so new to photography you can smell the leather. I'm working on a puppet music video and only have a go pro 3+ and a go pro knockoff and hoping it works well. What I lack in income I exceed in imagination and talent. Inspiring to hear you talk about cameras and camera related materials. Hoping to learn from you and possibly get one of the small camera's you mentioned like the Panasonic Lumix. Retired now so don't have much income, but you never know what happens in life. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge. I enjoy watching your video's...

Thanks for making such a great video. I am looking around for a small camera for the same reason and I therefore got the answer here! Surely not the type of point and shoot camera mainly for street photography but a Micro Four Third with those tiny lenses (Olympus 45mm f1.8 as well as the Pancake Lumix 20mm f1.7)

The GX85 is still a solid camera, I have one to compliment an Olympus EM1.2. The EM10 line is also pretty small, but it isn't going to contest the GX850 and definitely not the GM1/GM5. The Canon M cameras like the M10, M100, and M200 are all really small but pretty good stills cameras. The M100 seems to have gained some favor for street photography and the like where it's not highspeed action and size is more important. The M-mount is basically end of life at this point with Canon shifting both APS-C and Full frame mirrorless to the same mount (good for the consumer, no complaints here). There are still enough quality lenses in what's available for a good experience. Fuji kind of proves that you don't need 600 random lenses, you just need a small collection of solid lenses that work well. Personally, I'm a fan of rangefinder style brick bodies and would like an updated GM camera. The GM5 was and is basically my favorite small camera.

I've got the Sony a6300 with the 35 and 50mm 1.8 OSS lenses. And ya, I like the 18-135 OSS. Lightweight superzoom that won't kill my neck. I also have some bigger DSLRs, both are Pentax. I really am looking to get something in the m4/3 camp in the future, even if it lacks a EVF. As far as 1 inch sensors, I thoroughly enjoy my Lumix ZS-100. It's my favorite when I don't feel like lugging the bigger bodies, and want something with greater DOF but need better quality than the tiny sensors for prints to give to friends and family.

Awesome! I’ll get the G880 who needs a viewfinder.. I wear glasses so I avoid them. Small camera, Micro four third’s sensor and a good lens is the way to go. It’s interchangeable so that’s a plus. I’m so tired of those tiny weeny sensor cameras with no blurry background and so much noise...

The Lumix G100 is smaller, lighter, has double the ISO, a fully articulated screen instead of just tilting, a much higher resolution viewfinder, higher rez LCD screen, and at least some form of stabilization. There's a reason they stopped making it but the G100 still goes on.

A compact APS-C mirrorless with a Canon 50mm 1.8 (nifty fifty) slapped on it should be another good option for that rich bokeh, accentuated color & edge contrast look as well, right? That lens always delivers really solid background blur once you open past 4/5.6 (depending on distance), it weighs practically nothing and is nearly as flat as a pancake.
@taxfool

What do you think about the Sony A5100 or A6100? I still use a sony NEX 5T or 5N which is very compact and takes great pictures. I've used with some vintage lenses that are cheap and really blur the background. alternatively, you can use the Sigma lenses which are very sharp and blur the background.

Just arrived home after capturing a set of blurry bounded backgrounds with one of my bokeh producing lenses, a 10 bladed pre-Super 55mm Takumars, $55 in mint condition on EBay, lovely Bokeh, only one of many more like minded cheapies on my plate. Hundreds/thousands of dollars for alternatives? Just recently picked up a relatively cheap 50mm Zeuss Pancolar and an 8 element 50mm f1.4 Tak to be used for the same purposes..... Hundreds/Thousands for the same effect? Not Me.

I forced myself to go up to a tourist whose camera was so ridiculously small, I had to find out more. She was rocking an Olympus OMD10 Mark ii with the 17mm Zuiko lens. The camera has a silent shutter, 4K and is tiny, tiny, tiny. Suggest you take a look, I was blown away, can't wait to get me a couple of these babies with the 17, 45, and 75mm lenses. Oh, and it's super cheap too.

edit: just saw your videos on the nx500. i'll leave my comment online anyway since i love this camera system so much. with those big lenses there isn't really a point for small cameras... samsung nx500 with 30mm/f2 pancake. it doesn't get smaller than this. even though they left the camera business years ago, i still didn't find a worthy successor that is as compact and ergonomic. makes a perfect couple with the nx1

Yeah, I often don’t have a camera when I’m not being paid to have one with me. Maybe a APS-C Sony, and just try baby steps away from my full frame cameras. Or, maybe I just need to “harden the F up” and carry the Canon with me.

I wanted a good all-around camera. I have a Lumix G3, but wanted one of the newer Panasonic bodies with built in image stablization. I picked up a used G85. I'm not sure I want or need a second smaller camera, but the G3 with a small, fastish prime lens might fill the bill on that.
