That’s because when smallville started, it was more about the characters than the plot. The convoluted and campy plot is what cheapened smallville in later seasons. Scenes like this were what made it so great

kool kev I agree that sometimes Lana went too far demanding him to tell his secret. But maybe she did that because she understood it was not easy for him to live always hiding something? Do you remember Alicia’s actions? She risked her life to save Clark’s secret. Then she revealed his secret to a person who would never betray him Chloe. Alicia did that Chloe to write an objective article about freaks. It was for making Clark’s life easier. Lana's character is close to reality. She's not perfect. She has pluses and minuses. Yeah she made mistakes but her good side is much more stonger than the bad one. Because: - s8ep11, Clark was told that the only way to save the world was to kill the body that Brianiac inhabited (Chloe). Clark thought to do it. But who was the one who convinced him that he could save Chloe and billions of lives. She made him do what would seem impossible (even Legion of Super-Heroes didn't know what to do, but Lana did!): he saved both Chloe and the rest of the world. So do you still think he would never become a superhero if he stayed with Lana? - s4ep2 and s11 she saved Lois' life; - s5ep13 she was there to comfort Clark after Jonathan's death; she searched every pawnshop in Metropolis and returned Clark his father's watch; - s3ep3, the episode where Lana hated freaks. But! When she learned that Clark was freak too, she kicked freak-killer's ass to save Clark; she was not afraid for her life but for Clark's. "Clark is more human than you will ever be!" - she told to the freak-killer who could kill her ("You know, there's only the one thing I hate worse than a freak and that's a freak-lover"). Notice, Lana, being arm-tied overcame a 84 kg guy BY HERSELF! - s3ep2, "damsel in distress" saved ON HER OWN Martha and Jonathan and herself from gangsters; - s4ep22, she stole and kept the Crystal of Air, risking her own life. Then she gave it to Clark because he needed it more; - s8ep14, she stopped Clark from killing Lex because he would never forgive himself. This scene showed what was more important to her: vengeance for Lex or love for Clark; -s8, at first she didn't want to be with Clark because she thought that "the world needs him more" (as Lois in s10); also don't forget her words in s7ep5: "Clark, I just want to grab on to you and never let you go but one day the world will need you more than I do, and I don't want to be the one holding you here"; - s1ep9, Clark was upset and thought his parents’ life would be better if they had never adopted him. Lana comforted him and told her own similar story with happy ending; - s1ep2, Clark dreams that he's flying to Lana. Then he wakes up and he is really flying! She made him fly as Lois did. Do you still think Clark couldn’t take off being with Lana? Actually there are more good deeds made by Lana. But people prefer not to see them. So obviously Lana isn’t the worst Smallville character at least because she could make Clark fly (as Lois could), believe in himself, she loved Clark more than her own life (as Lois and other his beloved ones did). Also deep down Lana was a badass person too. And she needed super abilities mostly to be with Clark, not because she considered herself weak. We see that in season 11. When she lost all her powers, she wasn’t upset at all. She decided to stay in Africa and continue helping children being normal. Her words “Now, even without my powers, I feel stronger than ever”.

@@Flower-x6c THANK YOU superbelle!!! People like to act as if Lana was not a major part of this show. To me Smallville is about the relationship between Clark and Lana. All those other things and people just happen to have happened around that relationship. It is what got a lot of viewers interested and tuned in in the first place. Lana was put through a hell of A LOT and still managed to come into her own at the end as a stronger person. She also made Clark a stronger person emotionally and mentally. People need to give her props instead of hate.

@@Flower-x6c To go with this, I think few people look at Clark's character as deeply and who is to blame for his character flaws in his development, Jonathan and Martha Kent. The three major points that had been driven into him was, control, hiding, and mistrust. These all led to the constant emotional state of worry and fear, as well as various outside sources adding to these. Clark you must learn to control your abilities, lead to the negative effect of trying to control others, or make decisions for them, in trying to protect them or keep them from being hurt. Hiding his secret, lead to the suppression of his emotions as even Martha Kent brought up, not being willing to act on them or being able to express them as fully. Mistrust of course seems obvious, but even in this, he didn't trust himself enough, back to control of abilities, thus lack of self confidence in himself, this also leads back to the decision making aspect for others, and trusting that they would be willing to accept him, because in some cases he couldn't accept himself still. Yet, the main motivational emotions behind all of this was the constant fear and worry of hurting others and of others being hurt, hence his "need to protect them" echoing the "need to hide and protect the secret". I mean he was basically suffering from an Anxiety Disorder, so I don't blame Lana at all for trying to break through all the times she did and finally get him to open up to her. Also as far as your points about Lana saving Chloe... “We are done being victims, our love and relationship, is no longer going to be the cost or expense to be paid to forces outside of our own control. If we give this up, our relationship, our love and keep running away from each other in defeat, they have won the war, no matter if we have won the battle. We have come too far, been through too much, been hurt and hurt each other as well, been forced apart, only to come back together time and time again afterwards, some how, some way, still finding our way home to each other, to what really matters in life. I may have this greater destiny, but I’m only one man, and what is that destiny worth, helping the world, saving others, solving the world problems, if we can’t solve our own problems right here at home, with those that matter most in our lives. It is not a destiny worth living, if I have to keep doing it alone. I have been doing this alone for so long and so many years.” “Finally I no longer had too, I had my partner in life next to me, working with me, and no one is going to rob me of that. I’ve had it taking away far too many times, or have sacrificed it willingly too many times, but no more. I need you in my life Lana and as my love for you is my witness, we found a way to save Chloe when others thought that the only answer was to sacrifice her to save the world, but we found another away to save Chloe. Our love will no longer be the sacrifice to save the world, we will find another away, we didn’t give up on our friend when she needed us most, and we are not going to give up on each other so easily, we will find away even if right now it doesn’t seem like there is away, when all hope seems lost, it is when we need it the most, just like Chloe needed it from us to save her. Also what good is it providing hope to the people of the world, if we can’t find it for ourselves, for our love, and our relationship, we are worth it Lana, just like how the world is worth saving, our love is worth saving as well Lana. We are worth saving.”
