I’m renting a space now, and everything you mentioned on this video tells me I’m doing things right. I have Phillips hue bulbs outfitted throughout my entire home. And I’m using Aqara for smart switches to control my window AC units, and the little buttons to turn them on/off. Also using one of the buttons as a doorbell.

Wow! Great tips, these are the same tips I share with our friends when they are looking to making their apartments like ours a Smart Home. I didn’t know about the Etsy Philips Hue light switch covers. We bought some covers off of Amazon both the one you’ve shown and for flip switches. Our smart lock, Level Lock, is an amazing door lock! We love it, and the best part is it replaces the inside portion of the lock while keeping the same outside lock.

Great vid as always. nice to know we 'Renter's' aren't forgotten:) In the UK we still don't have a great selection (most are overpriced as usual for the UK!) I set all my smart lighting with the IKEA lights and bridge, smart sockets + their blinds. They are cheap compared to other manufacturer's (a GU10 bulb is £6?) It all works seamlessly with Homekit too. I'd love to change a few wall sockets, but alas they don't do them in the finish the landlord stipulates... not yet anyway! Anything I fit, I make sure it can be returned to original afterwards, thats the line I work to.

You'd think someone would combine a smart lock and video doorbell. It could be battery powered but use pogo pins/contacts stuck to the door frame to stay charged while the door is closed.

Hey Shane, thanks to your informative videos! I live in an apartment and purchased a Logitech Circle view video doorbell. Would love to send you pics or a video of my setup! Thanks to your letting us know about one of your viewers who didn’t already have a doorbell, who used a wall adapter to power it, I got the same adapter off of Amazon. I screwed the camera beside the front door, and ran the power cord along the side of the door frame and sealed it there with clear silicone. Looks great! Pushed it in at the bottom of the door, between the threshold and the door frame and siliconed that as well. Finally, ran it along the bottom of my sliding glass door over to the wall socket. I hid the cable with a cord concealer kit by Eveo, from Amazon. The sliding glass door is white, just like the cord concealer. You can’t even tell it’s an add on! It just looks like part of the sliding door frame. I can very easily pull it all up when it’s time to move, without leaving much of a mess. It works great, along with my Apple TV 4K, 2nd edition, and my two HomePods and one HomePod mini. Tomorrow my Level touch arrives, and I’ll be setting that up tomorrow! Made sure to get permission, IN WRITING, from management before doing all of this. Thanks to you, this is just the beginning, as I’ll be getting a few more items to add to my HomeKit! Considering getting a Starling home hub so that I can get my Nest thermostat on my HomeKit. Any thoughts on that item? Let me know if you’d like some pics or a video of my apartment setup. Looking forward to more of your videos!

@@ShaneCreates Well, I just watched your video from 8 months ago about the Aqara G2H indoor camera. I’m thinking of getting two of them for inside my apartment and a Logitech Circle view(that you also have reviewed) to go outside, to capture the areas my Circle view video doorbell misses. So, eight months later, do you still have the same enthusiasm about the Aqara G2H as you did when you first got it, or do you now have a better preference for indoor security camera?
@aadkszcn

Great video! This is definitely the best KZfaq channel for Homekit! I am also renting and I think I will take your recommendation and add an Aqara button as doorbell. Thanks for the recommendation. One thing that one could add to this topic, is that when you are renting you are likely to be in a situation where it pays to integrating things that don't have native Homekit support instead of buying something for an apartment you don't own. Such as an old TV through IR blaster over Homebridge or and old A/C over Sensibo.

Some good tips Shane. I think it’s kinda funny that the word ‘affordable’ has disappeared from your intro. 🤣 Thinking that many (most?) people start-off their HomeKit Smart Home build thinking “this won’t be too costly”, but then quickly find-out how pricey some of this stuff gets. Not just due to the fact that it’s HomeKit...but more so because there is WAY more stuff that can be added than you’d imagine at the start of a Smart Home build. I dunno. It (the intro change) was just something that I noticed (maybe a few weeks ago) as a difference from your older videos. Anyway. Good stuff again. Thanks, as always, for giving me something to watch on Sunday morning.
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 жыл бұрын
Haha thanks Brad. I get this comment from time to time. I stopped using the term "affordable" in my intro specifically because it's just one of those terms that no one ever agrees on. It's too relative. What's affordable for one person may not be for another and people have different priorities when it comes to how they spend their money. Is still important to me but I just decided to put more focus on keeping things simple and easy to setup/understand rather than the cost.
@uniqueflh2941
@uniqueflh2941 3 жыл бұрын
Shane Whatley - Totally understand. I think, unfortunately, had you remained focused on ‘affordable’ (regardless of definition), your videos would have ended after about a dozen uploads... Your content, this video as a great example, seems to offer options for everyone & every budget. - Maybe I’m being a bit of a tech snob, but I kinda believe that if you’re in the market to build a super-cheap Smart Home...you should probably just settle for Alexa and whatever inexpensive gear Amazon has to offer. Leave HomeKit to the ‘cool kids’. 😏
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 жыл бұрын
@@uniqueflh2941 haha yea that’s probably true. Fortunately, I do think that there are more and more “affordable” HomeKit options realeased all the time. Definitely seems to have gotten better over the past couple of years.

I guess it all depends on where your priorities lie, I for one believe if you want something you will budget and save for it. Some people could care less about the convenience and safety of a smart home, but I am not one of them.

Great Video, We are moving to a rental soon and the lock ideas are a huge help. I've been watching your videos and they are a huge help, I did purchase a Aqara Camera yesterday per your review video (I did click the link and got it for $56 Thanks!) I also have a Nanoleaf Shapes, that I'm hoping they will be able to upgrade to Thread. Would love to hear your opinion Thread vs Zigbee as I use a Homepod Mini and will have an Aqara/Zigbee hub through the Camera. I'm debating on waiting for Eve to upgraded their sensors to Thread or going for the Aqara/Zigbee products... Thanks again and I really apricate your videos
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ryan! I’ll do a video about thread pretty soon. In my experience, zigbee products like Aqara sensors have worked very well...reliable and fast. I think they will end up being similar to thread in performance, with the big difference being thread devices won’t need that additional hub/bridge like zigbee stuff. Also, I think some of the newer Eve sensors already support thread. Thanks again for watching and supporting the channel!

Will do Shane. I’ll be keeping an eye out on October 1. In terms of the Friday smart lock. I’d like to use the optional adapter plate even though I don’t need it. I just think it gives a better finished appearance. Also because of some irregularities in the surface of my door, the lock doesn’t seem to spin 100% effortlessly. I would do some touch up on the door but because it’s an apartment I don’t want to mess with it and have the landlord throw a fit. But I think I’ll need to buy a tailpiece extender for my existing lock because it’s not going to be long enough with the adapter plate, as well as some slightly longer screws. Do you think that’s possible and Do you see any issues with doing that?

Another option could be if the apartment has laundry, dishwasher, or under the sink. Water sensors and smart outlets to turn the product off if there is a water leak. Even though it is the landlord issue for leaks. It could save some major inconveniences for the tenant. Plus, a remote notification would be nice too.

I live in a apartment and I have changed the light switches with no issues now with that being said I did have to get permission A lot of people don’t get what a smart home is so I have to explain what I’m doing but they were chill and laid-back about it even at my old apartment they let me change the whole lock not just the thumb turn so really you just Gotta talk to your property managerI put a deadbolt locks in place of door knobs. I Ceiling mounted cameras Sensors and light strips I did make holes I just know I have to patch them and paint before I leaveIf you have an older apartment or renting a older home be careful mounting 3M tape to the walls especially if they’ve been painting over multiple times because it will rip the paint off and you will see the old paint behind it I have a stair rail it’s kinda ugly. I was thinking about unscrewing it Putting it away, buying another one making two channels in it For two light strips either cololight Or life X and putting a motion sensor at the top and bottom of the stairs so the LED would slowly follow the direction of stairs your walking to.
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing Sedrick. Good tip about the 3M tape. Sounds like you had a pretty cool landlord. I don’t think many would want their tenants changing light switches. And the worst part I think would be moving when your lease is up...having to either leave them or change them all back. But I think you’re right, it never hurts to ask. Seek permission and maybe you’ll get lucky and be able to do things like that.

Hey Shane, how's life going ? I had 2 questions. Firstly, I was wondering how the Vocolinc would work without hub if we're not home ? How is it connected to the Apple TV, then the homekit basically ? And secondly, I'm living with my gf and she is in my homekit setup. However, when I create an automation concerning light when I leave home, I put "when nobody is at home", then it's supposed to take into account my gf. But it doesnt. All lights are cut off when I leave, even though she is at home, with her phone obviously. How could I modify this ? Thanks a lot mate. Cheers.

Hey, thanks for watching. To answer: 1. Yes, vocolinc (or any wifi homekit device) requires a hub (Apple TV, etc.) for processing and issuing out commands when you are not at home. Check out my video coming this Sunday (spoiler alert) for a full explanation on how all these different types of devices work and connect to homekit. 2. I'd recommend first making sure she is sharing her phone's location and location services are turned on.

Question for you, Shane, or anyone else who reads this and can help. I have a scenario I can’t seem to figure out. It involves a smart switch controlling a light fixture that has a RGB bulb in it. When my wife goes to bed, she turns the light off with the smart switch on the wall. When I get up the next day, I turn a home app scene on for watching tv that sets that bulb to a specific brightness level and a specific color. But since she turned the smart switch off, the scene fails because it only includes setting the brightness level and color of the bulb, and since as far as the bulbs are concerned, the lights are off (since my wife turned them off with the switch). So they don’t come on. My next thought is, just add the smart switch to the scene. Only problem there is, the switch command is executed at the same time or after the bulb brightness and color command is executed. So that scene only just turns on the switch, seemingly ignoring the bulb command. Maybe the solution is just hitting that scene twice - once to turn on the smart switch and the second to turn to the correct brightness and color. Idk, it just feels like there should be a way to order the commands in a scene, or maybe utilize an IFTTT. I even thought if I could have the physical pushing of the smart switch do something other than turn the light on/off - if I could map that switch to turn off the bulbs instead, then the circuit would never be turned off and then the bulb brightness/color command would work. Thoughts anyone? Thanks!

A few thoughts... First of all, this is why I usually say smart bulbs and smart wall switches typically don't play well together. Personally, I always choose one or the other. For me, it's smart switches when there is a wall switch and smart bulbs for everything else, usually accent lighting. But if you must use both, I think you are on the right track with your thinking. You need to find a way to cut the switch on first, then change the bulb. You could try using conditional automations. For example, IF the switch is turned on, between 4am and noon, turn the color of the bulb blue. And do similar automation for other times, if that would work. Additionally there are some switches that would probably allow you bypass the physical switch and only use it as an automation...for example, to control the bulb. I think this would require a neutral wire. I know the Aqara light switches (with neutral) give you this option and there may be others as well. You could also just cover up the light switch and get a wireless homekit button to program to the bulb as well. Hope this helps!

Would have loved to have seen a router recommendation

There are lots of good options out there. I've been using Netgear Orbi mesh wifi for over a year with my homekit setup and have been happy with it. Others such as the Eero and Linksys Velop mesh routers support HomeKit Secure Networking also.

One thing you didn’t really cover is air conditioners - probably because there are so few. I do have a GE HomeKit window unit which is painful to put in/take out every year, but haven’t had any issues with connectivity or reliability. My biggest complaint would be that the ONLY part exposed to HomeKit is the temperature, making it impossible to automate the fan speed or cooling mode without using their specific app.

If that's the case, it would be a lot easier to just use a $20 HomeKit temperature sensor. Although I wasn't aware of HomeKit enabled window AC units. Thanks for sharing!

@@ShaneCreates I was thinking the same - the only benefit I saw was the ability to control the fan speed and cooling modes. But you need GE's app, none of it is available to HomeKit. Also, I found it quite hard to find a decent window unit that would come back on after power loss. They all seem to have digital controls with remotes as standard. I considered a HomeKit+HomeBridge IR blaster as well, but decided that was too much aggravation.

Is hoobs like home assistant
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 жыл бұрын
hmmm.. sort of. Hoobs is basically the same thing as Homebridge, just a little easier and better interface maybe. The main purpose of homebridge is to integrate devices into homekit that don't natively support it. So with hoobs/homebridge, you'd typically still use homekit as the "brains" to run your smart home. Whereas I think home assistant is intended to be more of the brains of the entire smart home for things like running automations, etc.

Another awesome video, Shane. I was watching another smart home channel, "The Hook Up", and the guy was listing everything in his smart house (some of which were DIY projects) and ranking each with a scale, which I thought was a great idea. His scale was "S" - Should be in every home, "A" - Cost Effective and High Impact, "B" - Great projects recommended for any smart home, "C" - Money may be spent better somewhere else, "D" - Interesting concept but poor execution, "F" - Don't waste your money. I think it would be awesome to see you go through your smart home and list out everything you have currently, and even things you may have tried out but did't work out for you, and rank them in similar categories as listed above. You may also want to check out this KZfaqr's video and you may see some things that are non-native HomeKit gear that could be exposed to HomeKit via HOOBS. You may be able to find some inspiration for future video content from his video. There were some very cool ideas he showed in his smart home that I would eventually like to incorporate into my smart home.
