Utilizing an ultrasonic sensor, Smart Dustbin operates on the idea of object detection. Sound waves are sent by the ultrasonic sensor. When an item approaches the sensor, these waves are reflected. This produces an electrical signal that is used to open the trash lid.

For making the same project i used a motion sensor connected to a timer with a relay. Very simple and cheap. Unfortunately i don't have the link but i bought them on eBay for about $2.50 motion sensor, $3.25 timer and $3.50 servo. Of course this was a few years ago, I'm not sure now but i guess it's not that much higher.

Yus being a EE undergrad its overwhelming how often microcontrollers are used even in applications where they aren't needed Just imagine they used to build these circuits like 20-30 years ago before the boom of embedded devices

Buena idea. Pero el servo debe ir fuera o ir integrado con la carcaza. Good idea, but servo must go out of the garbage container or be integrated with the hardcase

Can be done easily without an Arduino and servo. Using them makes the circuit more expensive. What if we have to fix these circuits to dustbins at a large scale? The expenses will be high

@@JustAHackersI earlier created a circuit for this. It had a gear motor, IC CD4081(AND Gate IC), 2 microswitches, IC L293D( Motor Driver),a few resistors, PNP transistor and IR sensor. The IR Sensor would detect if anybody is close to the dustbin. Then it would turn on the motor. But when the lid hits the microswitch, it would turnoff the motor. When the person removes his hand, the motor would turn the other way around, hence closing the lid.

@@dragoncraft6595lmao I hate myself for not using a micro switch as feedback like you did. I was so focused on the electronics that I didn't put thought into mechanics .I've did a similar project before, but I used a servo that I've made myself that is MCU free. Only difference is that my dustbin opens when an object is detected above and remains open for a specific delay, thanks to the 555 timers.

Great , but the problem over here is that the sensors are only at the front of the dustbin (it's a proximity sensor), what if the person comes from behind or from sidewards, the sensor may not work.

Adding a scanner will allow you to scan for the recycle logo, which would give the option of 1 of 4 options, opening the appropriate lid. Like the motion sensor though...nicely done

Good.. you can make one edition to this. It may have two sections one for distinguishing plastic and one wet waste or something other. This also needs people awareness like if they use color bags for different kind waste and than it detects color and accordingly waste is distinguished. Just and idea not sure how to make it work.
