DIY tip! If you put a key on your keychain, you do not have to break in your house when the power goes out. I have had Genie openers (belt and screw drive) for 10+ years with no issues. Avoid the belt drive if you have a heavy door. It works, but you get a good bit of slack. I used a belt drive on my heavy all wood door and it kept a good deal of slack with the tension. Still lasted for 10+ years though.

Thank you so much for addressing all my concerns. I have Chamberlain now and it's going bad and I bought a Genie at Costco on clearance, I wasn't sure if I want to keep it. Now I'm definitely sure about keeping it.

I have a genie screw drive that has worked for 20 years. Been very happy with it. Now it’s doing the same thing yours is doing. Plug and unplug it. Sometimes it works most times it doesn’t. Thanks for your information I will check out my local cosco and see if they have it.

I bought the Genie 7055 from Menards with an 8 ft extension. Been nothing but problems. Opto wheel was cracked causing door to stop 2 ft short going up or down. Replaced that, worked fine for a while, then door would not close. Opens fine but does not close. Replaced curcuit board still does not close. Cycles fine when door not attached. Safety lights work as they should, reverses when blocked. Acts like it feels an obstruction.

Your Homeowner “hunch” PAID 10FOLD my man! What isn’t publicly advertised/disclosed: Chamberlain: 12VDC motor weak motor, very reliant on the gearing for the “torque” which makes it louder overall also. Genie: 24VDC motor waaaay more torque, smoothly/quietly/more easily open and close your garage door. Chamberlain : has basically become a technology company, they’ve been progressively downgrading the quality of their products while increasing the price. The latest chamberlain won’t last half as long as your prior. Genie: slow to integrate technology and no likely hopes of charging cloud storage/monthly subscription fees. Side note: when you get your lift you’ll want/NEED to ADD “HI-LIFT” (track, springs, etc) to your door to maximize and/or just fit your car lift. Once you do that you HAVE to change from a “trolley style operator” to a jackshaft. Buy the Genie 6070-6170 (non/wifi) essentially the same motor/electronics you have currently in a different orientation/box. Double check with Genie, about failure/door open. Liftmaster(chamberlain) never disclosed that, and I think it only happens on specific models using the 888LM wall console (it appears to be a 888LM design and/or failure more so than the jackshaft line)... PS battery backup available on the genie 6070/6170 should be the same battery you already have. Easier install, no cable tension monitor either.

Genie now makes a jackshaft opener with the same features as this one. Model #6170.

$1500 hi lift + genie 6170 install on the west coast for any car lift or other car enthusiasts interested.

Still loving it. Just like every app, sometimes it needs updated or uninstalled and reinstalled for some Nintendo type reason (ha ha) but otherwise it's been great.

Genie installed by builder is trash. Their platform has major pitfalls if you're needing to hook up to a new router, like we do. It's basically toast and we are buying the MyQ to offset this pitfall.

@@shootsgarage2787 when I bought my screen door, I removed the lock and had it keyed the same as the front door, I always have this key with my car key for just this reason. So does my wife. Why do I have a Liftmaster….my son-in-law bought one with a belt drive. His daughters bedroom is above the garage and the door opener would wake her up, not anymore. That door opener is soooo quiet. I was Impressed and when my genie died with my garage door (January 1.2019), I had one installed with the new door. My last 2 genie openers didn’t last 5 years total. I have never gotten more than 8 years out of them. My last home had Allstars that lasted 14 years, at which time I sold our new home. My first genie was in 1977. I also had Mooreomatics and I had that one 10 years, it was still working when I sold that home. My grandson has 2 Liftmaster that have been operating since 1996. My condo has a Liftmaster that has been operating since 1995. I have the battery backup, MyQ, etc. Thanks…Jim
