Does a Past Divorce Disqualify from being a Pastor?

I recall that Charles Stanley's wife wanted a divorce in the early 2000s, and Dr. Stanley wanted to stay with his wife. Several years later, she went ahead and divorced him anyway. Dr. Stanley went before his congregation at First Baptist Church of Atlanta, and he wanted to step down, but his congregation wanted him to remain as the Head Pastor. As a result, Dr. Stanley remained as the Pastor until his untimely death several months ago (2023). I do not question Dr. Stanley's integrity, and I would leave the judgement in this case to the Lord. I might add, Dr. Stanley never remarried, and he focused the rest of his life to his ministry.

Pastor Charles Stanley, unbeknownst to me was committed to the Biblical Teachings of the Apostles, that as Pastor/Shepherd of the flock you've got to be the husband of one wife, notwithstanding the fact that his wife decided to go ahead with the divorce. In marriage "the married couple in the sight of God become one flesh". It's a Great, Glorious and Godly mystery.🙏

I was married almost 24 years. My wife wanted a divorce, although she had no biblical basis for it. She was unhappy. I did everything in my power to save our marriage and family, even believing God would restore the marriage. It takes two to make a marriage work, and if they other person does not want to remain, you have no choice in the matter.

I have been married 36 years. A pastor cannot be divorced. The Bible clearly states a pastor can only have one wife. What really alarms me is that you only hear divorce in the church being discussed on social media. You never hear the issue of divorce discussed in the Christian churches. Pastors are afraid to discuss the issue. But, they know exactly what the Bible says.
@txag8 күн бұрын
Yes in Timothy it states one wife. However it does not state only one wife in the pastor's life. There is a better argument for the verse referring to someone who does not have multiple wives. Having multiple wives would require more of the man's attention to them and less to God and preaching the Word. Now YOU interpret it to mean only one wife in a man's life. That does not directly translate to being correct.
@timothythompson40367 күн бұрын
@@txag I don't understand what is confusing about that? The Bible clearly states a pastor or elder can only be married once. Unless your wife died, you are not allowed to get married again. The Bible is very clear about this.

Some pastors need to understand that they ask to be held to a higher standard once they hold that position as a pastor. They love it when things are going well for them, they call their congregation out at every service when "life" happens to them, but when their sins (pastors) are put in the spotlight, then all of sudden they're not allowed to be called out. Look inward and keep that same energy that you have for the sins of your congregation. No one is above accountability.

Corporate christians are without a doubt the most judgemental, hypocritical, ignorant, and arrogant demographic there ever was. They are obsessed with using the name of Emmanuel (whom they call "Jesus") as their weapon of choice with which they justify their extra-biblical and even outright anti-biblical actions. They pick and choose verses to justify their worldliness (e.g., the so-called "prosperity gospel" and women being prohibited from being pastors). Their worst, most damning issues is how they put the teachings of Saul of Tarsus on the same level as Emmanuel, their actual savior. They will often times blasphemously act as if Saul's words supersede the COMMANDS of Emmanuel. The reasons for your divorces were acceptable by biblical standards which is all that matters. Adultery, abuse, and abandonment are all grounds for divorce according to various Bible verses in both the old and new testaments.

Thank you for this interesting video + your explanations on that topic which I can fully follow. Please, allow me to express a few thoughts: 1. When the divorce of a pastor happens due to his immorality, he has nothing to do in the pulpit anymore as he will never be able to prove to his community that he is free of any immoral thoughts and thus pure. 2. If he had not been immoral, the question is whether he tends to make wrong choices concerning a wife hence might make wrong decisions when leading a community. 3. If other reasons led to a divorce, point 2 applies as well. If a church community still wanted him to be a pastor (after repentance etc.), he should be scrutinized beforehand. This could be done by asking him to preach on the topic where he had failed in his marriage. The congregation then would see how (intensely and genuinely) he preaches on this topic and could see whether a real healing had taken place.

Divorced pastor here. I caught my ex wife in an emotional and possibly physical affair. She refused to take accountability and filed for divorce without a Biblical basis. I did not aid the process, but I did not stop it. The Lord will not disqualify you for the sins of others. I know that most divorces are initiated by women, and few of them are for Biblical reasons. Women were barely granted the right to divorce according to Biblical law because their emotions have to potential to wreak havoc on godly men. However, their rebellion will not stop the work of the Lord.

Not a pastor however going through the similar situation. Wife was caught in an emotional and possibly physical affair. Talked to the guy all the up until she moved out. She refused accountability and could not see a different prospective than her own and the people who enabled her. It didn't start like this otherwise I wouldn't have married her. Marriage is two people coming together as one. However, when one is not willing to fight, one is not humble to see or appreciate the one she married, one is not grateful for what God brought to her (she made a FB post about wanting a husband a year exactly before we met); what can be done? Fighting for something that may be a losing battle or praising and honoring the Lord where the victory is already his. Time is the most value asset we have. It should be wasted.

Some of us need a crash course again on what the blood of Jesus can do. Does God hate divorce of course he does just like every other sin! But if a person repents and goes through the proper time of being broken and restored, who are we to put a limit on how the blood of Jesus can justify a person and cast their sin fron them as far from them as the East is from the west? We must uphold the qualifications of being a leader im the church. That is without question. If the call and anointing and gift is on a person, it's not for us to determine. Should leaders be sat down for any sin? Of course! But if the blood of Jesus is not powerful enough to restore a person back after they repent and gone through proper restoration? This man is not qualified to be a pastor, and neither is any other man who has gotten an unbiblical divorce. Unless there was sexual immorality or the wife died, he's not even divorced. In God's eyes, he's still married. It doesn't matter if his marriage was years ago or before he got saved, because marriage is permanent in the Christian faith. If he has gotten another woman, then he's a cheater. If his wife has gotten another dude, then she's a cheater. It's comical that we think The Lord respects our laws. We come up with stuff like "irreconcilable differences," and think God should approve our paperwork. Jesus is clear as Windex about marriage and divorce. He deals with this in Matthew 5. He repeats the same standard in Matthew 19. If a man is deliberately violating Jesus' teachings, then he his bringing reproach to himself and should not be a pastor. For those who have gotten a divorce and call this "being judgmental," please remember what 2 Timothy 3:16 says "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." Let's not confuse correction with condemnation. If Christians keep simping on this topic and being lenient about divorce, then we'll continue to destroy our families, which is exactly what Satan wants.

I like this video. I'm divorced. Not by choice. Husband chose his sin nature with women led him away. He initiated the divorce, and although I prayed every day, God let my ex husband finish it. With that in mind, I've become so sensitive to this. The man was making excuses. Irreconcilable Differences is an unBiblical reason to divorce. That term means that two people can't see eye to eye, which means REFUSES to see eye to eye. And as a Believer we lay down our lives for another. If he readily divorced her and kept focusing on the church members, he did not lay down his life for his wife ...the one he committed to first on this earth. And he did need to sit....but pride keeps men pushing forward.

Yes a pastor can be divorced but only if his wife is unfaithful within their marriage. He cannot remarry again unless his wife is deceased.
@thomasbranham437411 ай бұрын
This is a tricky subject for some. I would say that it depends on the circumstances surrounding the divorce. If the divorce happened because he committed adultery, then that is lifetime disqualification from ministry imo.

There are way too many factors in a marriage to hold only ONE person accountable. Society judges divorce because it’s an easy target or criticism because people know divorce hurts and is unlikely done in haste. It’s a way for people to extract narcissistic supply when they criticize or judge a divorced individual.

The person in a marriage that first mentions divorce, destroys the marriage because they are thinking/planning it. Jesus said it "everything comes from the heart".

Is this considered a commandments and consequences from the God? 1 Corinthians 7:10 But for those who are married, I have a command that comes not from me, but from the Lord. A wife must not leave her husband. 11 But if she does leave him, (let her remain single) or else be reconciled to him. And (the husband must not leave his wife.) Jesus continued:] "You have heard the law that says, 'A man can divorce his wife by merely giving her a written notice of divorce.' But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. And (anyone who marries a divorced woman also commits adultery.)" - Matthew 5:31-32 Later, when [Jesus] was alone with his disciples in the house, they brought up the subject [of divorce] again. He told them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery against her. And if a woman divorces her husband and marries someone else, she commits adultery." - Mark 10:10-12 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 : 9 Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, 10 or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people-none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. 9 I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people-- 10 not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11 But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.

Obviously forgiveness & attempting reconciliation in hopes of restoring the marriage should always be the 1st option since it’s in accord with the will of God at the institution of marriage (Gen. 2:22-25). However, if sexual immorality/infidelity occurs or abandonment, or abuse, I wonder how many of those dogmatic about no divorce & remarriage would still be such if it happened to them or a family member.

if God has called him to pasture and if he is living in absolute holy and obedient life unto the Lord God does not take away his position at as a pastor in the body of Christ. Then according to the word of God this is the measurement rod to determine whether or not he can be married a good again. These things are so simple but people make them very complex because they don't acknowledge the simplicity of God's word oftentimes .

I knew a wonderful pastor whose wife died. Years later he married a divorced woman. He immediately resigned as pastor of a church he had founded and pastured for 20 years. He did continue to preach, but he never pastured again. There is a significant difference between a pastor and a preacher. You rarely find a Man of God who can master the talents of a good pastor and a good preacher. They are usually one or the other.

As a former divorce attorney- the Lord convicted me right up out of that life- a lawyer is NOT a pastor. The two don’t even fit together. As I grow closer to God and read His Word for myself, my choice is to not sit under a divorced pastor. The ones I know have been prideful and loosey goosey with talking about divorce, remarriage, or just plain sin in general. I personally don’t trust them to rightly divide the Word if it makes them look bad.

The doctors or lawyers are only professions. The role of a pastor is a calling by God. That means you are going to deal with a spiritual being even after you die. Pastors better rethink their calling and accountability. Stay sincere and obedient to Jesus Christ.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a divorced person being a pastor, but at the same time, I definitely believe in thoroughly investigating the circumstances surrounding the divorce before considering a divorced person to be a pastor of a church. I don't think it's a sin to get divorced in a domestic violence situation, a child abuse situation, an adultery situation, or a situation of a husband and wife not being compatible. In order for a marriage to work out, the husband and wife have to be compatible. Sometimes people make the mistake of marrying someone they're not compatible with. I do think it's a sin to divorce your spouse due to your spouse getting less attractive, due to your spouse gaining weight, due to your spouse losing their job, due to your spouse getting sick, etc because God wants people to take the marriage vow of "for better or worse" seriously. "For better or worse" means being there in situations such as a spouse losing their job, a spouse getting sick, a spouse getting paralyzed, etc. "For better or worse" doesn't mean tolerant being abused, tolerate being cheated on, etc.

People that uses ministry as an excuse to neglect their responsibilities in the home are basically accusing God of causing their marriage to collapse and that is not ok. As a believing husband, there is nothing more scary to me than to be ‘called’ to become a pastor. In my current walk in the faith, I think that If God chooses to call me to fill this office, my response would be “nahh, I ain’t that guy”. It’s such a scary thing and people take it with levity.

My brother managing and controlling is two different things. If someone does not want to stay with you how is he responsible if she wants to leave or vice versa you can’t make someone do something they don’t want to do. And I’m not speaking as someone who’s been divorced because I haven’t been divorced, but there is nowhere in scripture that says a divorced person can’t pastor.

I truly understand your reasoning. But the Bible says “if he marries another he commits adultery if you marry a divorced person you commit adultery”. I’m paraphrasing, but how can you say they can continue to teach and preach after the fact. If there is no biblical grounds for divorce it’s hard to say that a pastor can come back from that. Biblically I don’t see it.
@marvinellison872711 ай бұрын
This will go on and on. Teach the Word. The Word qualifies and disqualified. Most fall under disqualification by false teachings and that they weren't God's chosen. False teachers only strengthen because most fail to study meditate and seek God daily. The woman at the well fear of man was so great until Christ had to encourage and show her love. Not condemnation. Paul wouldn't stand a chance with this condemning culture today. Bible clearly states that we are not to judge in a condemning way before its time. Judge ourselves to see if we are in the will of God. Those who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God. The blinds are leading the blinds because most refuse to seek God's face. It's dangerous and deadly to just take one's word of the gospel. The Bible clearly describes God's love in His Commandments. Which is our love for Him and one another. The woman at the well being married five times and Christ didn't condemn her but encouraged and love her. The Word of God has all our answers that pertain to life and godliness. Seek to know love and strengthen.
