Questions answered in this episode:
1. What is the difference between feeding alfalfa pellets vs alfalfa cubes? Is there a better option between the two? Noted my horses are getting free choice hay and have good teeth, I just wanted to add some alfalfa in the diet for the winter months for more calories.
2. What is the difference between steaming and soaking hay? What is the benefit for both?
3. Is there any benefit to feeding horses flax seeds or chia seeds in their grain. If so, how much should you feed?
4. Can you discuss the presence of side bones in horses? Is it normal or an area of concern? Would a horse with side bones "fail" a PPE in your opinion?
5. Does coastal hay actually increase risk of colic? If so, why?

Thanks for the tip on neutral detergent fiber. I had seen this on my hay analysis but had no idea of the significance.

Hi, my horse was just diagnosed with Cushings, so I have switched to alfalfa/Timothy mixed cubes. I soaked them to remove sugar and avoid choking. After soaking , it seems like a large volume of food to eat all at once, because he eats it so much faster than he would eat regular soaked hay. I can only get out to see him once a day, and want him to have enough fiber, but...is all at once and kinda fast ok?

Question... I have a senior that can't chew hay. I've been giving her chopped hay but now she seems to be having trouble chewing that. She does do great with pellets that are soaked. My question is, is it ok to only give alfalfa pellets or is there another type of pellet hay I should be using?

We have a horse at my barn that has gastric ulcers and he is a cribber. Everytime there is a windy, stormy, temperature swings, or any other kind of stressful things, he will give signs of colic but never has truly coliced( just symptoms). Is there any thing we could do to prevent this from happening, he is one Outlast supplement every day but still does not prevent it from happening? Thank you so much for the videos and amazing answers!! #askthevet

My question about flaxseed is, can you pre-grind the flaxseed then put in an airtight container and refrigerate for a couple of days or is it necessary to grind it the very hour before you feed it?

Love your Ask the vet videos! Very simple and useful. In my country (Russia) the level of knowledge about horse health, feeding, training is catastrophically low (( So I thought of making subtitles in russian to your videos and promote them on our sites and on youtube. Is it okay to do so?

Hi Equestrian Grace 4 and Sara M - this is terrible news, especially since I’ve seen how many questions you’ve both submitted and had answered. I can assure you that the emails have gotten sent (look for an email from me!), but they may have ended up in your spam/junk folders. I’ll talk to our Customer Care team about resending them to you so that you can get them ASAP. I’m really sorry for the inconvenience! - SmartPaker Nels
