How smartphones have negatively impacted the camera industry. You'd think it would motivate camera companies to make better cameras, since smartphones have killed off the lower end of cameras like point and shoots, the 1 inch sensor compact, even entry level mirrorless cameras don't hold much edge over the latest smartphones like the iphone 14 pro max or Samsung S23 ultra. And of course the best smartphone for video, vlogging and slow mo the Huawei P40 Pro.

Serious Question: With Panasonic PDAF, does Fujifilm now have the worst AF of all the big boy brands? Did they anger Mitsubishi by abandoning their post as the middle ground between quality and size to pursue 4th place in the full frame market?

You only need 8 Mega pixels for 4k 240p. Or even better 1080p 8 Megapixels on a modern aps-c sensor would be so good. Not only the high frame rate, you're going to get so much better dynamic range.

The price/performance ratio has to do with the fact that smartphones are mass-produced, and widely used WAY more than mirrorless cameras. This crazy amount of revenue coming in and production at scale means that they are able to lower the cost per unit, as well as invest more in R&D to improve the technology faster.

I really do love this video and consider it be one of your best: the introspection, and depth - it speaks to consumerism and the idea that camera companies put a lot of stuff on the market that really has less to do with creativity but simply to make money. (A sort of deception and an attempt to fool unwary consumers even).The truth is that much of what is put on the market blinds us to what is really important. I admire your search for innovation, the thoughtfulness and the creativity that goes into your video.

And it gets even worse, my old ass Ixus 85 with tiny weeny sensor still has very superior sharpness, colours and zoom sharpness than S23 base and maybe S Ultra. And yet S phones supposedly have bigger sensors, new tech, latest CMOS bayer filters. Only to be beaten badly by some cheap and crappy point and shoot from over decade ago with dinosaur era CCD sensor, which is also 1/2.3" inch size. And the closest successor to this sad and old Ixus is actually SX 740 which is perhaps not any better except for zoom capabilities. You would need to shell out 4-5 times more money for Sony RX APS-C compact camera to maybe get a substantially better image quality, but despite that, that camera is also much bigger, not really compact (doesn't fit pockets all that well) and much heavier. Obviously there are DSLRs that are nice, but if you want good compact cam, the market really sucks and you have no real options other than spending a ton of money on some suboptimal option that also happens to fail at compactness. And then there's some "cheaper" option like ZV-1, but it's genuinely worse than Ixus 85. Colours suck, white balance is often terrible, it costs a lot more and dynamic range is also bad. It has more megapixels, articulating screen, but why would I care about all that when it fails in all key areas that I care about a lot more? At least in DSLR/mirrorless field things generally improve even if slowly and at high cost, but in other segments situation got genuinely worse and more expensive.

Cinematic mode in the iPhone 14 is still crap. The bokeh is fake and it shows. Edges are soft and unrealistic. Smartphones have no depth of field control. They're great for landscape photography when everything can be in focus. But, everything else is better captured by real cameras. Mirrorless and DSLRs make smartphones look like Toys R Us rejects.

its amazing to me that these phone cameras have all this magic software yet it doesn't get applied to larger sensors. Moonshot I think DJI will be the one to surprise us with something new based on how innovative they have been. DJI Ronin 4d is genius and their modular action cam is decent. I have a Sony QX1 (2014) that I pair with a Zhuyin crane m2 (2020). Great set up for what I use it for. I based this on the DJI Osmo (2014) handle and Zenmuse X3 drone camera. I think they were the first to introduce this one handed gimbal style. They had the original Osmo handle then they had the 4k version and then the x5. All very cool but ahead of their time, before vlogging was as widely "accepted". I was a product placed right in the middle of pro and beginner before there was a big market for it. Are you familiar with the DJI Osmo handle or the Sony QX1?

The slo mo footage was amazing and I don't even like HD slo mo usually. You're spot on about the iPhone 14. It looks amazing when you shoot video of anything aside from a close up of a face-the most important thing for the vanity of vloggers. Way, way over sharpened. It actually adds digital artifacts to your face. If you have a little stubble or birthmarks it will turn you into a wolfman. Which is great if you want to be a wolfman. The perfect vlogging camera does not exist. The closest thing is the Panasonic GH6, but it's too heavy, ironically for a micro4loserTM. A Sony ZV-E10 with Panasonic level stability and Panasonic colours would be the perfect vlogging camera.

I hear you on so many levels with your frustration with release of tech in today's gear. I happen to jave and shoot lots of daily life with the Samsung S22 ULTRA, and will concede that the P40 Pro does excell in many ways but the lens sellection and image quality is something that has actually got me taking it out of my pocket to capture quite a bit more than with other phones. As far as dedicated Camera equipment goes, I would love to see you test the R3 for wildlife. Forgive me if you have had and tested this camera and I just missed it, but I've actually started to take more notice of it recently and think many of the features would be clutch for you, like the instant video recording from photo mode by pressing record, and the incrwadible autofocus and image quality. I trust that you would give honest and considerate feedback from your experience. I haven't really felt impressed or motivated by lower resolution cameras as a photography focussed shooter for a while now, but the speed and accuracy of the R3 does peek my interest, and image quality and performance in low light looks pretty amazing.

What an allegorical event: The herring flew away much like our dreams of the perfect camera. This is why I have stopped buying new gear and using the stuff I have, granted. the limitations are high, but the knowledge of not having to spend $$$$ to be disappointed is priceless. Ideally we want the perfect camera to be affordable and meet our every expectations, but who could afford it, the more you add the more it costs. Canon and these other brands understand there is a limit to the cost of a mass produced camera. Planed obsolescence is real as our planet is flat! So we are stuck...between the dome of our dreams and the realization of our camera desolate field.

I am not here yet, as 8 bit 100 mbit log is not great for video, i think anything full frame with 10 bit log is touching diminishing return point and minimum that must be "good enough and no more care of upgrade". Anything more is barely increase output quality.
@gruntaxeman3740
@gruntaxeman3740 Жыл бұрын
@@AABB-px8lc Full frame lenses are big and and that makes stabilization harder. So we need different types of cameras to different situations. 8-bit 100Mbit/s log for 4k, or 8-bit 50Mbit/s log for FullHD can actually work fine. I got trick here that I shoot using log (HLG or S-Log2, depends on shot) gamma but keep colors on Rec709, and transform those to linear ACES to editing/grading, and then everything back to Rec709. It is those colors that fails on 8-bit log if these are streched to large gamut. However, this process is still very sensitive to exposure. There is no playroom, exposure need to be perfect.

I hate that my stupid iPhone is good enough. I sold half my RF lenses after I tested photos and videos side by side with my iPhone- sure I could see the difference on a big ass monitor but posting stuff side by side on the gram proved it is pointless for me to own a 24-70 F2.8. Now I only grab a camera for 85mm+ or when I need to use flash at all. It’s pretty bittersweet. It ended ten years of constant gear acquisition syndrome. Five years ago the money I wasted on camera gear felt like a smart way to waste it, now I need to make large prints and/or 4K documentaries for Netflix if I want to feel like I wasted my money wisely.

With most people consuming vlogs on small screens (smartphones or tablets, even laptops), most modern phones produce good enough video from the front camera, even if built-in mics aren't good. That's easily solved with an external mic. Even my 2 year old S20 shoots good 4K30/1080P 60 with the front camera. 6" smartphone screens mask a lot of video deficiencies!

It's painful because now that I finally have the money for a new camera set up, there's literally nothing on the market worth buying. The A7S III is the closing thing that fits my needs. Literally if they released the same camera with a 24MP sensor than my needs are met. But honestly the things I document do benefit from higher frame rates, and it only seems the cameras are getting worse.

What I'm wondering about is why a canon R8 costs 50% more of an RP, with barely any improvements. All it has is some video features (great leaps in 5 years!) And worse colours. Everything costs more, which would not be a problem if two items came out at the same time, but after 5 years I expect certain features to come cheaper: it's how technology works, but in the late year it seems no more the case (graphic cards?)

You must consider the goal. The goal of every camera company is to sell you one or more cameras and a bushel basket of lenses every year. Now, if they sell you something that fully satisfies you, there will be no more camera purchases next year. So the camera companies emit cameras that fix two important problems and introduce three new ones. They hope you won't notice the problems until the return period has passed. Someday, we will all use cell phones for everything. They won't be great at anything, but we will have been trained not to notice. Those phones will be ten thousand dollars.

The industry is falling into "incremental improvements". So you probably need to change your expectations. It's too bad you sold off your M43 gear. I really see Olympus as being the real innovator in the room now. Their incorporation of computational photography is the future. Everyone is going to have to play catch-up. They did it with IBIS and now computational photography. Cell phone manufacturers are doing that as well.

I want to come from a different angle, and I want people to think about this angle. The major difference between a phone and a camera. These days is very little to be honest except for shooting bird photography obviously. But the one major difference is that phones will distract you and the ability to disconnect from society is lost. What am I talking about? Well what I’m talking about is mindfulness. If you have a camera in your hand you’re not answering that text you’re not thinking about that email, and you’re not thinking about that Instagram post getting all those likes. You’re lost In the moment you’re thinking about shutter speed you’re thinking about light. You are thinking about a whole bunch of things? and this disconnect you from all of the other things on your smart phone. I’ve taught people in my local community photography. And I’ve had a few students who rocked up with a smart phone and I will teach them still but I noticed within five or 10 minutes they’re on their phone answering something and then they would go back to taking photos. That’s the major difference. People will compare them to the camera side of it, but what I says, look at it from a mindfulness perspective.

Well said. A real camera allows you to slow down and be in the moment and actually “look” at what you are photographing.

@@justpray365 100% it does and what phones tend to do is give you instant gratification as the images are essentially, mostly JPEG‘s anyway, some people do set their phones to raw, but I don’t know many people who do that most people shoot in JPEG, and they want the photo to instantly look great straight after taking it. They are often heavily saturated, colourful and great. Instant gratification bit like chocolate. Sometimes it’s hard to go to the supermarket and get some nice really healthy food and cook it. People just want to grab burgers. I draw that analogy because I do believe it’s kind of true. Many phone is just want that instant gratification or instant hit ….

@@prdubi The whole planet needs to get off that bloody phones and start looking around and seeing what’s amazing. What stand me is people say I’ve got no time for this I’m too busy. I work in addiction and I see people with social media addiction and phone addiction. It’s really real present so many people and the best thing you can do is put your phone away and go for a walk with your camera.

I'm about 80% sure that raptor was indeed a Sharp-shinned Hawk. They're really hard to tell from a Cooper's. I'm going by the squarish tail. Will there ever be a perfect camera? No, because this channel needs to exist.

Don't feel bad about missing a bird until after it moves. We are designed to notice movement over static objects and, besides, you'll never beat my efforts in the field. I got within one step of literally standing on an adult male kangaroo lounging on the path right in front of me. When he jumped up, I wasn't sure if I was more shocked by this muscular beast standing in front of me or the fact that I'd managed to not see him.
