Not only should people wear a helmet, but they also must actually secure the strap correctly so it doesn't flip back on impact.
@dudeonbike800

So true. I've given Ryan VanDuzer unending crap for riding with straps dangling down in the wind. Make the chinstrap as tight as you can tolerate. And make sure the two side straps meet right under your earlobes. And your straps will need to be snugged down every ride - or more. (I sure with the helmet companies would address this shortcoming!)

I've been cycling for 35 years and prefer not to wear a helmet, like everything else it should be about personal choice so I wouldn't preach to anyone else they do the same..... thing..... personally it's just gives me a greater sense of FREEDOM which I believe what LIFE is all about...

Katie, glad to see that you're doing well. My story is - Many years ago we pretty much only wore helmets in races. It was a Friday night and I decided I was going to start wearing my helmet on our group ride. That's the last thing I remember until Saturday afternoon. We were winding up for a mid ride sprint and I hit a pothole. My front wheel broke in 3 pieces and collapsed. The hub hit the pavement hard enough to bend the fork to the down tube. I went head first into the road. The helmet saved my life. Haven't ridden without one since.

Nice to see that amazing smile. I spent years not wearing a helmet but in the 90’s I met a fellow hospital patient who had been involved in a bike crash that had him going over a small wall with a large drop on the other side… He was convinced his helmet saved him from brain damage. He convinced me to wear a helmet and I hope you sharing your experience online influences people to do likewise.

Dread to think how much worse it could have been. Thanks for sharing this, by the way. Can't be easy to revisit all this stuff and can bring up a lot of pain thinking of how bad the smash was. I got hit by a car going 40mph, leg smashed to pieces and they did need to go inside my head to drain the bleed on my brain, so I'm glad you're still walking and able to share this stuff, it took me a fair while.

Just had a similar crash two months ago! I did hit my head (& MY Lazer helmet also did it's job & compressed similar to yours), BUT for me, I was rotating as I impacted the ground. So while my head did take a pop, the shoulder took the brunt of my full impact & snapped my collarbone. Had surgery, they put in a titanium plate, & now I'm getting back to biz-as-usual. It's a tough go though...you're looking great & sounding better; so glad to hear/see. Blessings to you & continued recovery! BTW, also similar: my bike ended up with slightly more abrasion to the shift/brake lever (mine was on the right side however), and my super awesome special edition blue leather (to match my blue titanium Serotta) selle italia flight saddle got a massive road-rash-gash taken out of it...unrepairable. As much as that sucks: I was going 28 mph at the time so, both the bike & my body could've been WAY worse, just like it sounds yours could've been. I think starting next year (heading into winter here in the states), I will be more cautious about who I draft behind, too! Wishing you continued speedy recovery & look forward to future vids! Godspeed
