Smaug was essentially a fire drake of the third age considered to be the last great dragon to exist in middle earth. The beast appeared as one of the three main antagonists of the Hobbit along with Azog and Sauron.

As a kid, I remember seeing an animated version of The Hobbit in which Bilbo and Smaug were communicating but Smaug couldn't see him because he had the ring on. As Smaug looked around, it literally looked like flash lights were shinning out of both his eyes! I remember thinking cool and frightening at the same time. My point is, dragons are among us, but I like to think that Smaug remains supreme.

I was never really intimidated by dragons onscreen, but seeing Smaug talk and converse BEFORE attacking anyone was what told me dragons just got serious...
@davidgantenbein9362

avram novorra I think it also helps that the movie quite accurately depicts how the inhabitants of lake town can’t really defend themselves against his attacks. The movie does make a point in showing his cunning, his frightening presence and his physical superiority. Add the corrupting aura and magic influence powers from the book and we really get a truly frightening creature.

avram novorra so the fact that Smaug could talk and converse was more intimidating than the fact that he and other dragons were giant flame throwers?
@wren7195
@wren7195 4 жыл бұрын
@@dionjaywoollaston1349 Well, just in my opinion I suppose, but giant flame throwers are scary. They still need someone to wield them though, and that also includes intent of action, etc. If someone or something is so "alien" (unknown, not understood, etc) that we don't know where we should hide or when but that same someone-thing is what's in charge of the giant flamethrower... then that's what makes it scary for a lot of folk. Not saying you're wrong, not in any way, just wanted to reiterate the fact that anything/one with power that can harm or induce threat is not the threat itself. It is the being in control of those potential harms that is to be dealt with, feared, respected, fought... Yeah, the giant freakin' flamethrower having a (rather disturbingly polite) conversation with you instead of just immediately fragging you is unsettling and terrifying in that we don't know what's going on, what he'll do, why/what/when/where/howard. "I'd rather rely on knowing where a bad guy will fall than have to guess where a good guy might jump"
@dionjaywoollaston1349
@dionjaywoollaston1349 4 жыл бұрын
Wren hmm good point, though I think you were mistaken when you said “what he’ll do” part of what makes animals frightening is that you don’t know what it’s going to do next yet because Smaug can talk you have an idea, and I think we can all agree Smaug had no intention of letting bilbo leave, on a side note I think the ability to talk is a hunting skill, tricking humans into coming out of hiding because they think it can be reasoned with

@@a.morphous66 The greatest of the Urulokë, Ancalagon the Black, was so massive that when he fell during combat, his body broke Thangorodrim, the group of three volcanic mountains that guarded the fortress of Angband. Ancalagon the Black was the mightiest of the Winged Dragons while Glaurung, father of Dragons, is widely considered the greatest of Dragons as a whole. Glaurung was a wingless drake and has a fascinating story. He was responsible for the fate of the Children of Hurin (which is considered one of the darkest tales Tolkien wrote) and is responsible for breaking the Siege of Angband at the beginning of the Dagor Bragolloch, of Battle of Sudden Flame, which resulted in many deaths of the Noldor.

Smaug did not mark the end of the dragons, there were still many left in the Iron Mountains, north of Erebor. Tolkien was actually asked if Smaug was the last dragon, the reply was that if he did say that then it should be changed, because dragons would continue living. Although the people of Middle Earth aren't big fans of dragons, Tolkien is, and so are we...

I loved when they poured the molten gold on him, he looks truly bad ass covered in gold, but when he just shook it off like it was rain water.. man oh man, what a beast!

I really wish we got the opportunity to experience more dragons in the films and books because there seems to be a lot of mystery behind a lot of them. It would be interesting to see an interpretation of Smaug's life and upbringing, how exactly he turned out to be himself and what lead him to do so.

0:60 that's funny considering that is what I consider a dragon to be like. Also, it's not _too_ impressive that Smaug can smell and hear Bilbo. The ring only makes him invisible, not soundless and odorless. that's just using his other great senses.
