Excellent presentation! You have a really good tempo for beginners. Your patient, easy-going delivery is a pleasure to watch. On the contrary, I find that many other KZfaq presenters talk fast and loud, which can be irritating and - at times - nerve racking for a beginner like me who's trying to follow along, step-by-step. Please keep it up! This is rare, top notch content. Much appreciated 👍

All these ninja-wood-workers at this age of yotoube self proclamation and not once did I hear someone talk about this “organization” strategy. It is not just important for woodworkers or pros of any sorts but for anyone who is somewhat serious about what they do. It is crucial to know where your parts, fittings, accessories are at any given time. Number one deterrence from diving into a project (small or large) is not having all the necessary parts at hands reach at the moments notice. Even for so called weekend warriors. So for all of you youngsters I hope you learned something here. 30+ years of experience talking here. Thanks for the video and sharing BLR. All the best. 👽

Organization is so important. Thank you. My dad left a lot of tools and I decided to used them by adding a pocket hole jig. My first creation with pocket hole was a cat litter box. My cat absolutely loves it because it is SO STURDY and he has not gone back to his plastic litter box at all. I did not know how much my cat hated those plastic litter boxes. I am making about 10 furniture with pocket hole. It is my very first making furniture but it is not difficult. Because I cannot cut straight so well, I am having my lumber cut by professionals for big important pieces. I spent a lot of time planning. Planning is the most difficult part.

I like to use the pocket hole jig to first cut the initial pocket hole & then swap the stop ring over to a long enough 3/8" bit while leaving the two pieces to be joined still clamped in place so I can then drill out the entire cavity to my desired depth with the 3'/8" bit and then use a full length dowel that protrudes beyond the beginning of the pocket cut that I then after gluing in place cut off flush leaving a much stronger pocket dowel joint that benefits from the best of both world's without the dowel alignment issues.

Excellent resource for woodworking tips. Perhaps, the most important take away from this brief tutorial is the recommendation to have things where you can find them. Being able to put your hand to the right drill bit, router cutter, dowel accessory - whatever - makes the whole process much more of a pleasure, saving time and avoiding stress. And, yes, it is the small things, like tool accessories, that require the most organization. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.

I’ve been over drilling as a newbie and found this channel… I’m struggling with organization since I lost my studio bc of covid..moving everything to a townhouse in the city did not bode well from an organizational standpoint lol…so the speech about it at the end was a pleasant suprise :) I’ve only been doing woodwork for two years? as a hobby and make rustic items (tables/barn doors etc) and slowly curating bits and bobs and I’m having such a hard time with organizing small accessories. It would be nice to see how a professional stores and organizes things- do you have several tool boxes designated for bits and bobs? It would be great to see your setup in more detail one day :)

Pocket holes have been around for a very long time. Just not the type we see today. Furniture makers from long ago would use them when there was a need. And using Brace bits and slotted wood screws. Of angled dowels, which is nearly the same mechanical application. And definitely, after the electric drill was invented. I believe even the Shakers used them from time to time. Whether they used a jig to guide the drill, or not, that I do not know, but, I do know it's not only possible but usually easy enough to do freehand for certain applications.

I've done it. You're right. I started my drill on the end grain and just used drywall screws. Very shoddy as they would split softwood like pine. But we were using poplar and didn't know anything about Kreg. Built faceframes. Looked great and were extremely strong.

As others have stated, pocket holes have been around a long time. Kreg may have mainstreamed them, made them more accessible to new woodworkers but they did not invent pocket hole joinery. This is a good "what is a pocket hole" video but anyone using these for the first time should read the instructions thoroughly! This video leaves a lot out. The position of the kreg mini jig on the board depends on the thickness of the wood. For example, if one were working with with 1/2" (13mm) material the position the edge of the jig 1/4" off the edge of the wood. Likewise, the collar on the bit needs to change depending on the thickness of the wood. Again, this is a good "what is/intro to" video but shouldn't be used as a "how to".

Great presentation and you seemed to cover all aspects. One thing I would like you to explain is when driving in screws, what level on the drill gun do you use? And what should we feel for so we don't spin the screw?
@baileylineroad
@baileylineroad 6 ай бұрын
That's great question, Reggie! I should have explained this in the video. When driving pocket screws there is a distinct danger of over-driving and stripping out the wood-to-thread contact, and "spinning the screw" as you said. Two things will help prevent this. First, use the drill at a slow speed in the lowest gear setting your drill has. But more importantly, stop driving as soon as the screw has pulled the joint together. That's plenty of torque for a pocket joint. With practice you'll never over-drive screws. I hope this helps. Drop by my website baileylineroad.com for a visit sometime. You'll find lots of stuff there, including tool giveaways, articles and lots of other stuff of interest to hands-on, how-to people. Bye for now and thanks for watching! Steve

I use pocket screws all the time as a master Carpenter and a fine woodworker. They're pretty much your go-to standard joinery solution when building cabinets built-ins and bookshelves etc not to mention drawers and dresser type pieces... One thing I just don't agree with on this video is when he says pocket screws aren't very strong I disagree because pocket screws are hella strong and they are meant to be hidden on the inside of your builds if you put two or three pocket screws in a joint consisting of two three quarter inch plywood pieces I like to see anybody break those apart easily with any kind of reasonable torque or pressure that could ever be put on that object or piece of wood in a normal situation it just wouldn't ever be enough to break it or even dislodgett whatsoever. The only way you could split them apart is to just have one joint between two straight pieces and rip them apart like a wishbone maybe then you could split it apart other than that good luck...peace
@JayDee-xj9lu
@JayDee-xj9lu Жыл бұрын
I think he meant on it's own it's not that strong. you should always use glue. It's just a quick way of holding all the pieces together without having dozens of clamps. If you're making a kitchen carcase then all of the frame together makes it strong but one joint on it's own with a lever effect wouldn't be.

The sunlight is intense and heats up the room. The frame will be outside and hopefully will stop most of the sunlight. Using a Kreg tool will simplify the job. On a another subject, noticed what I thought was a microphone hanging on your shirt pocket. If so, am interested in finding out the brand and model # if available. Thanks.

“You’ll be a great woodworker who knows exactly where your stuff is” - until someone in your family borrows it. But if you cleverly hide stuff throughout your garage, then it won’t get borrowed! But great video, I think I’m ready to get a few Kreg parts and give it a go. If I can find my drill….

What about different distances to joints depending on thickness of wood? Trying to find something on that bit this video seems to avoid that question. So perhaps it's not a relevant question and pocket holes always at same distance?

Can anyone tell me what are the two small screws (adjusting screws) used for? I thought maybe they were spacers to make pocket holes in very short wood (5cm) but, I think I'm wrong. Shortest piece I could do is 6cm.

My pocket hole journey didn't begin or end well. It was too complicated and confusing. Had to give up and continue to use my old method of joining wood together. 😞

What happens if you drill thru and insert a dowel all the way through and glued it Bailey? Just sawed off the ends no filling necessary.

Great video but I wish you had gone into how to adjust the collar to the proper position. Otherwise very clear instructions.

Pocket holes weren’t invented by Kreg like you said but they did in fact make it easier for ppl to use.
