In December 2017, when I heard the news that "a KPOP idol had died of suicide", I told my husband that it the person was likely Jonghyun. I wish that NO idol had died on the 17th; and so unhappy to hear that my guess was correct. His crying after SHINee's debut stage was heart wrenching, but in a good way. We saw how sincere Jonghyun was, how much he loved his family and his members. He worked so hard because he felt that he owed his members and fans his best effort - and he was successful. In a culture where individual effort must be maximized, for the benefit of family, company, co-workers, and finally, oneself, Jonghyun checked all the boxes. His smiles were beautiful but sometimes he appeared to be smiling past the pain. There is a significant difference between being alone and being lonely. I don't know much about the cultural thinking in the place where he grew up. Different geographical areas recognize culture, law, and citizenry in their own way. I'm from Texas and our cultural and social customs are different from those of New York and Los Angeles. I think Jonghyun was gay and that his place or origin may have had very negative views of LGBTQ people. I'm gay and have experienced no bullying but plenty of internalized homophobia, which is corrosive and incredibly destructive. In one of his final interviews, when he was sitting on a bed while talking to an interviewer, he said that he was afraid to anyone ("the real me "), for fer that he would be rejected by everyone. Watching that painful interview broke my heart. As a depression person I can confirm that when you ease into that dark world you do feel as if your core is missing, you feel like an empty husk, a facsimile of a person, with no human inside. Hollowed out. Jognhyun was always reaching out. In keeping with cultural custom in public he rarely hugged the women in his life; he hugged, patted, and rubbed the backs of his hyungs and other men - also in line with custom. He reached to others to give them all the love he could and also sought their affection. He could never get enough love - and I hope that his friends understand that his undying thirst for love could NEVER be quenched by any person or group. He was just one of those sensitive people who always give more love than they can receive; that is an immutable need. No one should feel guilty about that. Jonghyun's final letter revealed his loneliness, his battle against the Black Dog, the futility he felt and the solution he had [obviously] long contemplated. It was easier to say that it was to do. I recall having a .22 caliber pistol in my mouth in 1977; I was by myself in a pasture on our family ranch and was at the edge of life, horribly depressed and in a situation from which I saw no end; except The End. Obviously I had second thoughts and decided to go forward; what could lay ahead? I was only 23 years old - there must be more. And there was. I'm 66 and for the past dozen or so years a big KPOP fan, primarily of SuJu, EXO, SHINee, and BTS. Now you know why Jonghyun's suicide was so personally disappointing. He was super sensitive, a good man, a good member, a good and honorable human being. He gave and gave and gave. What really hurt, though, what made me shed salty, buring, bitter tears, was the first time I counted the cross marks on his right arm - in the picture of him in a full bathtub in a striped shirt. You know the marks - four upright cut across by a fifth line. There were only 27 of them.
