Smelt dipping in Washington State is a popular recreational activity that typically takes place in the spring. This traditional fishing practice involves using nets to catch smelt, small silvery fish that migrate in large numbers along the Pacific Northwest coast. Participants often gather along riverbanks, such as the Cowlitz River, to dip their nets into the water and scoop up these elusive fish. The experience of smelt dipping not only offers the thrill of the catch but also provides a connection to nature and a sense of community among fellow anglers.
Deep frying smelt fish is a culinary delight that brings out the natural flavors and textures of this small, delicate fish. Smelt is often coated in a light batter or dredged in seasoned flour before being carefully immersed in hot oil for a quick fry. The process results in a crispy, golden exterior that gives way to tender, flaky flesh inside. The hot oil seals in the moisture of the fish, ensuring a juicy bite with each crunch. The scent of the frying smelt wafts through the air, promising a savory treat ahead. Once the smelt is cooked to perfection, it is usually served hot and fresh, perhaps with a squeeze of lemon or a side of tartar sauce for a burst of acidity that complements the richness of the fish. Eating deep-fried smelt is an experience of contrasts - the crispiness of the exterior against the softness of the fish, the savory saltiness against the tangy brightness of the accompaniments. With each bite, one can savor the intricate flavors and textures that make this simple dish a true culinary pleasure.

Yes.........that's why I was curious. Near St. Helen's while picking mushroom........we all seen this huge dark figuring running upright at an unbelievable speed! Scared the hell out off all of us and created fear. Don't know what it was, but not a Bear ! Needless to say we got out of the area that day. @@washingtonlife

@@bigfootswatching9986 that’s why you keep telling me to be careful out there when I go mushroom picking! I have not seen anything like that before but just a really weird loud strange noise. I got so scared I ran out. The noise sounded really evil. I only heard it once and never again. Thank you for always telling me to be careful out there when I’m mushroom picking and now I know why you keep telling me that! You seen something that I do not ever want to see when I’m out there.
