Join me as we take a look at this 1980's era S&W Model 19 in 357 magnum. At the range, we shoot American Eagle, Blazer Brass and Aguila 158 grain ammo to see which performs best.

The Original big badaboom. Really really nice revolver, and an excellent video. Thanks for posting this.

The original model 19 was great revolver for steady use with 38 Special and 38 Special +P and moderate use with 158gr 357 Magnum. In the early guns heavy police loads with 110gr & 125gr ammo was hard on the forcing cone and the top strap. Over time you would begin to get a groove in the top strap from hot gasses escaping the cylinder gap. Some erosion would occur at the forcing cone and occasionally you will see a cracked forcing cone though those are rare. It takes a considerable amount of shooting with the older original model 19 to incur any damage but S&W saw fit to beef up the materials a slight amount and introduce the nearly identical L frame to handle more use with hot 110 & 125gr loads.

Thanks for the info Frank! So it wasn't just a rumor. I could see how heavy shooting of the lighter 357 loads would cause an excessive amount of hot gas and powder to start causing issues. Although from what I read, it was only a problem with the blued models and the stainless variants seemed to hold up fine.

@@texmexshoots The stainless used at the time (model 66 K frame) resisted erosion of the forcing cone better but you can still get some top strap groove after extensive shooting of lightweight fast projectiles. 110-125gr full power hot 357 mag loads cause a lot of very hot gasses over a relatively small area. Even my old (60's vintage) N frame model 27 S&W has wear on the top strap and forcing cone. It's not bad but it is noticable.

Frank, do you have family in San Diego? Or are you a different Frank Browning?

That sure is a nice pistol you have there. I almost picked up a box of the Mexican Eagle at Academy the other day. If I recall it was not the cheapest 357 in 158 grain they had on the shelf so I ended up with another box of American Eagle. I do have a box of Blazer and a box of Fiocchi all in 158 grain. After that fiasco I had not long ago with primers busting and key holing projectiles I decided to go buy a couple of factory loaded boxes of 357 Mag so I'd have something to shoot out of my pistols and the R92 Rossi.

Thanks my friend. I just wish 357 magnum wasn’t so damn expensive. It’s also relatively hard to find around here. The bass pro near me had none in stock. I can just find a few boxes here and there at different academy’s.

I bought a Model 19-2 six inch made circa 1972, I was the first to shoot it, marvelous pistol. I bought it at an auction in august of this year 2023, it appeared unfired.

What an amazing find! They are wonderful pistols that make the shooter look good. Great score. Now your challenge will be finding 357 magnum that isn’t terribly expensive. 😅. Thanks for watching!

God's #1 most favorite handgun is the 1911 .45ACP (we won a couple World Wars with it.) His #2 is the S&W Model 19. He's a shooter. When I started in LE in the past century most of our deputies carried a Model 19 or a Model 28 Highway Patrolman in .357 Magnum, and their off-duty weapon was a 1911 in .45ACP. Nice pistol and it will do you well. Good shooting.

Thanks, Frank! There is just something majestic about the model K. It has the right proportions.

Beautiful gun, enjoy her.

Thank you. That’s very kind. She really is a great combination of power in a relatively lightweight revolver. At least compared to other 357’s . Hard not to love the K frames.

The first production one for great to carry as long as you use 38 special if use 357 magnum ammo he had to have a push injection rod to get them out rough Smith would do anything about it. Hopefully the new ones are better. best bang for the buck model 66 or six 686.

Thanks for watching TrailBoss! I appreciate the information. The 66 or its bigger brother, the 686 are both great options.

Outstanding gun and review. You may want to single-action cock with your left thumb to maintain your grip, just a suggestion sir.
@texmexshoots8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion! Not a bad idea. I repeatedly see people shooting that way with single actions in videos of SASS and other shooting events. I've conditioned myself to cock with my shooting hand since I was a kid touting single action 22lr. But I need to start practicing cocking with my left thumb.

First ammo was the best, killer. You're a stone cold litigator alright. Motion GRANTED.
