Smolyan and the Smolyan lakes
Smolyan is a city in southern Bulgaria, located in the Perelik-Prespa division of the Western Rhodopes at a high average altitude - 1035m. It is located 15 km from the famous winter resorts of Pamporovo and Mechi chal. The city was formed on June 18, 1960 from the two cities of Smolyan and Ustovo, and the villages of Raykovo and Ezerovo.
The Smolyan waterfall is in the city itself. Extremely beautiful because of the full water river on which it is located. The water does not dry up even in the summer months. Its height is 20m.
The Smolyan Lakes are a group of lakes in the Bukova Mountains, the Western Rhodopes, to the north under the Orpheus Rocks and Snezhanka Peak.
They are scattered along the left slope of the Cherna Reka valley, from the Orpheus Rocks and Snezhanka Peak to the town of Smolyan. In the past, there were over 20 lakes, but now only 8 remain, 7 of which are natural, and one of them (Keryanovy göl) has been converted into a micro-dam. The others today are swamps. In spring and autumn, small ponds reappear in the place of some of these marshes. Others have been converted into fishponds.
